Usually when we get an interesting nugget like what our friend Montana just posted, I will check in with Jason Cipriani over at berryscoop. Montana, I hope you don't mind that I shared a link to your post with him. Here's what he had to say about it, fwiw:

@greggds launch kits, has to be. Inventory shipments don't come straight from manufacturer.. Launch kits do sometimes.

cipriani15 @greggds I'm bettin on a ctia announcement with a release right after if not at the same time

I think with news of this "mystery box" we can only expect that a leaked pic with the contents will be over on engadget tomorrow (assuming this is being sent to all retail locations). Lets be honest, you already know SOMEONES curiousity is gonna get the best of them and that it will be opened before the intended date :)

Inside there will be a letter stating that you have broken Verizons anti trust policy and loss of all new phones for 1 year you must sell Motorola "bricks".....LOL

Okay, here's the best I could find by way of comparison. The tape looked exactly like the tape on the far left in this picture, same size, color and with the markings on the top and bottom, only it said "DO NOT OPEN UNTIL FURTHER INSTRUCTION." But it sure as hell feels like Christmas!

EDIT: Crap, sorry for the side-scroll now :(

Trust me, I even tried to bribe him to let me open the box. I even told him "Leave the room and come back in 5 minutes and no one will know otherwise!" Didn't work.

I just wish we could confirm that they are gonna market it as the HTC Incredible. If they name it something else, there may already be information out there on the interwebs that we could find. Still, great job MM, I will be anticipating some more VZW sources to come forward tomorrow.

And that HTC sprung for Sunday delivery means they really needed to get it there. That bodes really well for some kind of anouncement this week. Of course that he only received promo materials and no stock of phones means that the actual release probably isn't happening next week.

Edit: Unless of course he was hiding them from Montana so he wouldn't grab one and run for the door. :D

Agreed about the Sunday delivery. However, I wouldn't necessarily say that about the fact that the phones aren't in stock yet. If they went to all the trouble for Sunday delivery and an embargo, I could see them having the phones ready to ship out the day they are announced to limit the risk of someone showing them off ahead of time. I don't see why they couldn't easily be at stores before the weekend, though I don't know that it will happen that way. I just think that it is possible.

Wow... what an afternoon! My good friend / VZW manager calls me up around 1 pm to tell me to come down to the store to see something. He didn't say much else. Needless to say, I bolt down there - it's a slow Sunday afternoon and he's the only one on staff in the store. He says, "You may want to see this." In the small backroom/warehouse was a 4' cube plain cardboard box that he had just received from Fed-Ex.. on a Sunday, mind you. The return label address read as follows:

HTC America
13920 SE Eastgate Way, Suite 400
Bellevue, Washington 98005
Tel: 425-679-5318

Also on the box in red and black tape (think crime-scene type of tape, only in red and black instead of yellow and black) with the words "DO NOT OPEN UNTIL FURTHER INSTRUCTION). Just like that, in all caps. The tape was ALL over the box!! The invoice that came with the box said only, "New - Promotional materials." The box weighed next to nothing, but there was at least one thing that "thumped" in the lower corner of the box when we shook it a bit. We cracked the tape JUST enough to see some red and black paperwork / literature / posters but that was it. Our best conclusion is that the box is full of Incredible promotional materials (i.e. Launch Kit) along with a possible "dummy" Incredible phone (as his store does not have live phones on display, only "dummy" phones). He told me this was exactly how the Droid launched - the mystery box showed up on a Sunday, with no warning, with the weird tape all over the box. In the box was a "dummy" Droid for display purposes and some posters. The Droid released about 1-2 weeks later, if I remember correctly. Keep in mind, in today's case and in the Droid's case, the word "Verizon" was nowhere to be seen on either box or on the accompanying paperwork.

Pretty exciting stuff for a slow Sunday afternoon in Montana! This is driving me crazy!

i hate to play devils advocate... but why wouldn't you have snapped a pic? Honestly, this day and age if you don't have a pic more or less it didnt happen. (i'm not saying it's BS, but why no pic?).

Secondly...who gets a shipment on a Sunday? I want to believe...but having a tough time. You sure it's not promo materials for the Eris deals happening now?

From what I understand, VZW typically has new release phones shipped to stores overnight the day before the release.

Why would they have a fort knox type attitude towards eris deal info?

Do you REALLY want to see a cardboard box with red tape on it THAT bad?

True. That is possible too. I just edited my post to add another possibility as you were posting that maybe they did receive them and just didn't show Montana that box.

Varanoid may be right on. I believe it was apang who said that his contacts were expecting their inventory this tuesday (3/23) for a 3/27 launch.
