Help Discussion of any overheating issues with the HTC EVO 4G LTE.

So twice now, I have plugged in the device just to give me a little extra juice before going out.
The first time I was going out to the watch fireworks and figured I would use the camera to take a couple of photos when I noticed it had shut down and would no longer power on.
Today, I had neglected plugging it in over night so I popped it on the charger in the morning. About an hour later I ran to the store. As I was getting out of the car, I noticed that it was wicked hot again. This time however I managed to restart and "Seemed" to fine.
And...
For at least the next 83 days I will be staying stock. So other than a handful of Social Media apps and Angry Birds the phone is new out of the box.

Now my question,

Is this a common problem, and if so is there a fix or should be looking into a replacement?
 
Thanks everyone. I will property do just that. I am glad to know that I'm not the only person to have this happen. It does bum me out because I was getting everything where I want it.
 
Mine's getting hot too, at the top of the phone.
When using telenav. And last night, I wasn't using nav, just chrome.
So you're saying it shouldn't be getting hot at all?
Did you swap at sprint store? How does that work?
 
Mine has been getting a bit toasty on occasion to. But so did my EVO 4G as well.

Seems to get hot when making calls for long periods or especially playing a graphic intensive game. Figured it was just par for the course with these phones. But if this not normal then I probably should consider swapping it out for a new one.

The usage you just mentioned IS par for the course. It's when the phone gets unusually warm/hot w/o any activity that should warrant concern and inspection.

As a caveat, when the latter occurs, make sure you've answered the following questions before heading to request a swap of the headset:

1) What's the current environment? (phone primarily in a cooler, AC'd area vs. in your pants/shorts pocket in 80+ degree heat)
2) Is your 3G network left on in a less than stellar reception area? (this is a huge factor if you have auto-sync enabled and your phone is trying to update/refresh on a crap signal)
3) Any data/battery intensive apps running in background? (again, huge factor, as even when you aren't using certain apps, they could still be pulling a decent amount of battery, in turn causing rising batt. temp)


If all can be ruled out, then a trip to Sprint or your store of purchase is in order. Keep in mind that these phones are environment sensitive and as such will reflect the temperature according to where they are being used!
 
I am with Will the top of mine is getting warm. It is not too hot to touch but warm none the less. I am not a big game person. I get on read news and stuff like that. I have never had any phone get warm like this. Should I think about taking it in? It does not seem warm when charging just when I use it. Got another one for my wife yesterday so she had not had time to try it out much. May ask her if hers is getting warm too. If it is will just figure that is par for the course.
 
Hot is ok, the heat we are talking about is so hot that you cannot actually hold the phone without experiencing physical discomfort (aka my hand is on fire). When the exterior reaches 160F you know there is a problem.


I assure you that you will have no doubt in your mind if it is happening to you.
 
Mine got hot twice yesterday and shutdown. Heat was concentrated at the top. First time I wasn't doing anything and it was in the holster. Second time I had enabled the hotspot. Both times I was outside and it was hot here but doesn't seem right. In regards to the second time, I noticed it was getting hot and watched the temp rise on the battery screen. CPU didn't show it was really doing anything, basically idle.
 
Well folks I finally experienced one too many overheating issues so I brought mine back to BB.

Today I was just talking on the phone for about 15 minutes and the phone was hot enough to cook an an egg on. The associate at BB was surprised how hot it was and even passed it around to the other associates and they were like "yikes!" and they all commented it shouldn't be doing this so they swapped mine out for a new one. No charge btw...

Seems to be much better.

Was this past the 14 day return?
 
No it was just shy of the 30 days. I think it was covered by the HTC warranty due to it being possibly a mechnical issue. The associate said she did a simple return/exchange and I didn't get charged.

I did sign up for that Black Tie damage protection thing when I bought the phone and was going to cancel it but I may just keep it after all. While I was sitting there were several people who came in with all types of issues like drops, water damage and other things. I know some people say it's waste of $ but that's insurance, never know when your going to need it.

If you use dropbox, and have it set to upload using data and WiFi and take pictures or videos, it will get wicked hot uploading. If this is the case, switch the setting in dropbox to use WiFi only to upload.
 
Periodically my HTC EVO LTE feels very warm to hold and the battery %age drops off significantly. GSam Battery Monitor indicates that the most use is via K-9 Mail, although i only opened one message long enough to delete it! Any thoughts? Should the phone go to a Sprint repair site to be checked?

Would it help to uninstall/reinstall K-9 Mail? Other suggestions?

Even though you only opened your mail app once, its still going to be running in the background in order to sync your emails

The ltevo is an insanely thin phone, as a result you can feel the heat its giving off much more easily.

I think there's probably another app being used (even if in background) when the phone heats up. Its likely not your email app
 
Could keeping the Bluetooth on cause the extra heating and battery drain? (The BT unit is on me at the time.)

Yes, this can cause heat production. You've got another radio turned on, its consuming power. That exchange will always produce heat, increase the power consumption, increase the heat.

If you use the BT to stream music to your car for instance, you'll probably have a hot phone after a little bit. Lots of data transfer, increased activity, more battery drain, etc. :)

The phone giving off heat is a good thing, you want it to do that. If it doesn't transfer that heat, you'll Bork the battery efficiency and possibly cook the hardware. Bad juju. ;)
 
Took my phone to Sprint Corporate Repair center and it checked out Ok. Phone still continued to feel warm with rapid fall off of battery. Noted that K9 Mail was consuming large %age of power, so uninstalled and reinstalled the program. So far so good; both external temperature (subjective) and improved battery stats (GSam Battery Monitor).
 
Mine was having a lot of hot battery issues (still has some, but not as bad). I was less concerned with the heat than the rapid battery drain. I think it's a combination of Sprint's crappy network and the apps doing a lot of background work. I got rid of the old Google Listen app (which was downloading a bunch of podcasts) and replaced it with a better app, which I've set up to only download when plugged in. It definitely heats up when streaming bluetooth to the car stereo.

From what I can tell from the discussion above, it sounds like this is somewhat normal. According to the battery monitor it is sometimes heating up to around 105, but nothing like the 160 mentioned above. But still very frustrating having to pay so much attention to my battery.

Will it get better if Sprint ever actually gets the LTE network they keep boasting about?
