Root [S-OFF] LazyPanda S-OFF for LTEvo[Locked or Unlocked devices]

I used an 8gb Adata card that I had as a backup. I wiped it in the phone and formatted it, then bricked with my first attempt in windows, then after I ran the unbrick tool in ubuntu and the phone booted up, I noticed it said there was an unformatted sdcard in it so I hit the button in the notification bar and let it format it again before I ran Freepanda again and everything worked great.

As for linux, i got everything I needed from the video on the unbrick page and this post at xda... Believe it or not I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to run FreePanda in the terminal window.

Watch the video on the unbrick page, pause it, back it up, replay it until you can figure out what he's typing in to get to the directory, chmod the file, and run it and it should work. Copy and paste all of the commands you have to type in, and remember to change the port to the correct one for your phone as instructed. It wasn't hard but it was a little frustrating. This was the first time I did anything in linux.

I'm with EarlyMon. Run it the first time from your working ubuntu installation or Live CD and then if it gives you a problem you're right there to run the unbricking tool. I got all of my links from the chrome bookmark import, then just copied them over to the firefox window.

If you're good with computers this really shouldn't be a big deal for you. Just remember, no one has reported not being able to unbrick with the tool from doing this. If it had happened you would have heard about it.

By the way, after getting s-off I flashed TWRP recovery and did a backup, them flashed meanrom .7 and all seems to be well. I will probably have to have the phone activated by Sprint but I'll wait to do that until tomorrow morning.

Our guide will also have to note the proper rom to use. It's my understanding that some of them can bork build.prop for s-off purposes.

Very true EM,
For instance, MeanROM v.7 uses an edited build.prop to help GW along.
That build.prop change will not reside in MeanROM v.8

Here is my plan S-Off plan
Nandroid
Swap out SD cards (format the new one in the phone)
Run the 1.13.xx... RUU
RegawMod rooter

Going to try to create a bootable USB stick with Ubuntu 12.04 (32bit)
Try LazyPanda using the bootable USB stick.

The developer's website has instructions, but they are a little vague-ish WRT the Linux instructions. I believe I know how to open a command line in linux (cntl-alt-T). Not sure about how/where to save the LazyPanda file. A little uncertain about navigating a new OS.

I am looking forward to trying out something new. I don't need S-Off. I have finally decided that it's just the challenge of doing it.

Anyway, I may be back asking more questions.

And of course I'll be updating about how the project went.

Edit: Ok, after much reading, I think I'm looking for the Linux command to run the feedpanda program. Maybe something with "sudo"? strike that "sudo ./FeedPanda"
I'm guessing that I will also have to extract the tar.gz file beforehand?

Here's how I remember it...

If you download FreePanda with Firefox it will save to your downloads folder. Click the icon on the top left (I think it was dashboard or something), click the second tab at the bottom and search in the box up top for terminal and click the icon that pops up. Change the directory to the downloads folder ('cd Downloads ' and yes the capital D matters), type 'ls' to get a program listing, if you see the file there you're in the right place.

When I was trying to get FreePanda to run I did copy the command he put on the PandaFinder file to see if it would run but I don't know if you have to do this first or not. Here's what I entered "tar zxf FreePanda.tar.gz" and I noticed that the file name turned green when i did that. I have no idea if that had to be done or not, but I did it and it worked. :)

To run the FreePanda file i finally figured out from the post at XDA to ype the following: 'sudo ./FeedPanda' to run it as superuser and sit back and wait for it to finish. This was directly after I did the unbrick procedure.

I'd suggest having both files already downloaded and both pages open at the lazypanda site and both threads open at XDA before you start so you don't have to look far if you have a problem.

The brick was no big deal at all because I was expecting it. The unbrick tool works. I'd almost say that over the top preparation isn't really necessary if you're prepared for it. Hopefully it works first time for you but if not just roll with it.

Here's a screenshot from the panda site of the commands to run the unbrick tool. Most of it is the same to initiate the Freepanda file too.

My explanation of how to do this in linux isn't pretty but it worked for me. There are plenty of linux guru's around to help if you need it.

Ran it today on my phone running Fresh 5.1.1 and it worked flawlessly for me. I flashed from W7 64bit and made sure to run it as an admin. Hope that info help anyone.

Also be sure to check out this link. It's RegawMOD Bootloader Customizer 3.1. You can change the bootloader text to make it look like your phone has S-ON and say Locked.

What other mods can I do with S-OFF currently?

Welcome to the club. :)

You did get lucky though, I do want others to know and be aware of the risk.

I suppose we'll see some other stuff to flash soon enough. You may be able to fastboot flash TWRP this way, although not sure and don't know if you'd want to.

Ok, is that what i am doing when I put a zip on card and it is recognized in bootloader and i tell it to go ahead and update?

thing is, i did that with regaws zip to remove the red right after I did panda, before these updates I think, so thought you must be talking about something else, are you? :p

The mod went in on the Bootloader Customizer two days ago.

If you just flashed the no-red-text from the bootloader fastboot, this is different.

You use it, it updates the bootloader with the fix.

The devs have figured out how to undo the soft brick, and there is a guide for recovering the phone if something were to happen.

No word yet on what is the cause for some.

Well, I'm kinda on my way.
I've created a bootable USB stick running 32-bit Ubuntu 12.04. I've even been able to boot up my Win7 64-bit laptop using the usb stick.

I've decided not to run the RUU. I'm running MeanROM v.8, without any build.prop edits.

The instructions for lazypanda seem pretty simple.

Do I need to extract the lazypanda.tar.gz file before running in with the command prompt? Or do I just run it without extracting?

Greatly appreciate the help.

From a terminal (command line) extract first by -

tar zxf lazypanda.tar.gz

UPPER / lower case matters. You can enter the first few letters of the file name and then hit tab to auto-complete.

To see a long listing of files and directories, use the double-l command -

ll

Directory entries will have a "d" as the first character in the listing. To change directory -

cd directory_name

To get back to your home directory if lost and wanting to start over, just an empty cd will do -

cd

I think that might help.

Forgive me for not quoting.
Thanks for the help!
I now have three files in the "Downloads" directory.

LazyPanda.....tar.gz
LazyPanda
hboot_img.

I'm guessing that is what I need? Just want to make sure before running.
Thanks EM

Ensure that it's executable by an ll command, you should see small x in the listing, as in -

-rwx.... For LazyPanda.

If not -

chmod 755 LazyPanda

To run as root -

sudo ./LazyPanda

The dot-slash aka ./ identities LazyPanda as being in the present directory, don't search the execution path for it.

LazyPanda opens an exploitation point and then flashes the hboot.img so you should be all set.

Please call out anything I've said that doesn't align with their instructions, thanks.

Ok, methinks we're getting there.
Downloaded the tar.gz to "Downloads" directory

extracted the LazyPanda.tar.gz within the "Downloads" directory.

I'm lost on the ll command you suggested in the post above. I still have my linux cherry intact. ;)

In the command prompt I changed my directory by typing "cd Downloads".
Then I typed ll. Said program couldn't be found.

LTEvo charging now.
Once I plug LTEvo into the computer, I'm assuming I just open a command prompt and type in "cd Downloads" then the run command? As in nothing to do with the phone other than plugging it into the usb port?

Apologies for the linux n00b questions.

off topic.... is there a way to make my mouse pointer/cursor larger in linux? I really like it so far, but I have to have a larger pointer.

Interesting indeed as I tried to run LazyPanda.
I was like, WTH? I looked again and saw that it was indeed FeedPanda. After running FeedPanda, things went MUCH smoother.

So you made it through without a brick?

Congrats. Feels good doesn't it?
