Ok, if your like me and you enjoy customizing android then you should like this short and simple tutorial.

Step 1: Find or make an image you like or want to use

Step 2: Open in Photoshop, then re-size to 480x800 and flip the image horizontally then save it as a 16bit bitmap with color profile R5 G6 B5, you can access color modes with the advanced button.

Choose option W to extract the kernel and ramdisk to the BOOT-EXTRACTED directory

The menu will change to give an option to rebuild the kernel after it has been extracted

Step 5: If you didn't before rename the image to logo.bmp

Step 6: Replace logo.bmp in the ramdisk with the image you edited

Step 7: Repack the ramdisk with the zImage

Step 8: Enjoy

Pictures coming later with more directions

This post will contain splash images for anyone unable to make them. Just extract the supplied zip file and add the image to your ramdisk.

Thank you :) I've been wanting to do this for a while but you've seemed how to figure it out :D I'll try it later today (gotta sleep for now lol)

thanks bro so much I've tried this... and I've been on the right path but now I see where I went wrong... u the man now I can try the 30 diff splash screens I made :)

If enough people find this useful i might message a mod and see if i can add it to the sticky. Don't wanna make edits to a sticky without proper permissions

That would be good... I have a question though... After I repack the kernel how large is the boot.img supposed to be? It goes from 16mb to 4.2mb after the repack

between 3 and 5mb is ok, would rather the latter but my OC kernel with new splash image is 4Mb exact. have you tested to see if it boots?

Nope... it gets to the image which is distorted as hell... and then it cuts off and reboots into recovery

what did you edit it with?

EDIT: I will take some pictures when i have a moment and add them to the tutorial

Gimp... and then I saved it with mspaint as a 24bit bitmap image like you said

did you save it in gimp as 24 bit as well?

EDIT: Updated the OP with more directions, and images. The tutorial should apply to gimp as well. be sure you save the image as the color profile in Gimp and Photoshop or you will get a funky distorted image upon boot

ill check and see if it has the option next time but I figured out that that's not the problem... the tool I'm using is effing up... I split the boot.img... repacked with no changes and it still won't boot up

Google Dsixda's Kitchen, it will run on windows using Cygwin. They have an awesome video tutorial for setting it up. It automatically detects the boot options and image size of the kernel/ramdisk so there's no guessing or confusion. I will post screenshot's of the options for it.

Ive installed the rom kitchen and the new kernel kitchen (it was released last month) plus cygwin (took forever to download)... they both won't create bootable kernels... I'm going to try doing it manually without the scripts if I can find a tutorial....

it has to be the ramdisk your using or if your unpacking from a non-working source that could be the cause, i can upload a new ramdisk if you like

Thanx a lot for this post. I created a splash screen using thwe methods above if anybody wants it.

I completely forgot about this but could you send MD the ram disk? I still can't build a working kernel for some reason

That is pretty fricking sweet!
Thanx, I threw it together in about 4 minutes... and that's including into mspaint and exporting 24 bit... I have 4 month old twins so I have trouble finding time to focus on much for long and I'm busy with many other things too... when I can find more time, I'll throw together some better ones and boot animations as well up here somewhere for people if they want em..
