How to hold the phone when using camera?

Galaxy Nexus is quite large for one handed use. I've noticed that the camera is in the top middle and is a bit inconvenient when taking pictures/videos because the traditional way of holding a camera you have fingers covering the camera if you were to hold the Galaxy Nexus like that. Apple seems to have got something right by putting the camera top right so that there is room for fingers at the bottom.

?

im confused at what you are referring to, if you hold the camera upright and not to the side, it creates the same type of picture(i actually believe it is a better picture if it is held upright, as opposed to holding it to the side)

When holding it portrait you get a portrait picture. But if i want to take a picture in landscape whilst holding the phone securely (2 hands) its really awkward.

Theres no room for my left hand's fingers to be placed that doesnt cover the camera lense. On the iPhone the camera is at the top edge of the phone so fingers have room at the bottom.

A bit like how this person is taking a picture, the fingers on her left hand have space at the bottom of the camera, to provide better grip. You know what it can be like taking pictures, people rushing about, its easy to drop it. I know the camera isn't one of the phones strong/selling points anyway.

the best method of landscape is similar to the picture above but with your elbows attached to your side for stability. my left hands resembles a C shape around the phone which blocks direct sunlight.

as for one handed.... i use my right hand, my index and pinkie on the top and bottom of the bezel for stability and then my middle and ring fingers go across the back while my thumb hits the shutter...works well but i do have large hands.

See where you do the C shape, I grip my phone. Its not just the index and thumb holding the phone. The other three fingers cradle it at the back too, for stability and support. I'm guessing Apple already thought of this one and may have a patent pending

You can grip with your right hand anyway you want, no reason to just hold it with 2 fingers. Put a deathgrip on that thing if you'd like.

The only thing the girl in that pic is doing wrong is her elbows. Tuck them right in against your sides. I know it might not sound like much, but that will add just a little more stability and get you a clearer pic.

I'm talking about the left hand, there's no room for a death grip since the camera is awkwardly placed in the middle. A death grip with the left hand would mean covering the lenses.

I hold my phone the other way, so that the shutter button is pressed with my right hand. My left hand wants to hold it like it is there (referring to that left hand) but the camera would be blocked.

So think of taking a picture with your right hand but both hands are symmetrical with how they hold the phone. That's the ideal way I would like to hold it but its not achievable with the way its designed :/

I use this as my camera app. It lets me set my volume buttons to take a picture. You don't have to fumble quite as much to get your finger in the right spot for the on screen button. Plus you don't even have to look at the screen if you're trying to snap something discreetly.

I agree. Got the paid one recently and it works great. Plus you can silence your shutter sound so you don't make PGA golfers mad when you take pics of them!

Oh. I don't think I could ever hold a phone like that. Its too uncomfortable. I need my left hand like that to brace the phone. I held my HTC Eris the exact same way (well, maybe not exact since the phone was much smaller).

Similarly to demache, I grip the phone with my right hand, thumb holding down the shutter button. Left middle finger on the top edge, left thumb on the bottom edge. Use left index finger to tap focus. Release right thumb to snap picture.
