[International / GSM] 4.1 official update question

sorry for the noobish question but im thinking about rooting my nexus for the first time to flash aokp and was wondering if while my phone is rooted will i stilll be able to download the official jelly bean update when its released or will i have to unroot lock the phone back up to receive the "official" update?

I think you'll need to unroot and lock the phone back up in order to get the update. I'm really looking forward to JB myself. :p

You won't be able to receive an OTA update if you have a custom ROM or a custom recovery installed. You can be rooted, but you've got to have a stock Android O/S installed (i.e., stock/factory ROM with no system apps frozen/renamed/deleted, etc.).

So, you'll have to return back to stock in order to receive an OTA.

The device's bootloader lock status shouldn't affect your ability to receive or install an OTA. Even the presence of the su binary and the Superuser app will not prevent the successful installation of an OTA (but you will lose root unless you save it with an app or manually).

I can't wait, either! :) I think / thought ICS was pretty sweet and everyone's reporting that the early versions of JB they've been playing with is really nice (and fast!).

I've certainly got OTA updates while rooted and unlocked. Will the jellybean update be different?

It should be the same! :) [crossing fingers ;)]

(and welcome to the AndroidForums, drzk! :))

Cheers!

I rooted my phone a few weeks ago and put on a JB 4.1 rom when they came out and now today I have a message saying to update to jb.

Hmm, they must not have disabled the OTA update checking code that's typically done (i.e., disabled) in a custom ROM. I'm sure you'll see that feature in the ROMs that are built from source in the very near future.

Cheers!
