I want to upgrade my system but my phone is flash n I heard if you do it can erase everything. So I guess I need a custom rom, kernel or something. I'm new to the android system n don't know much about it

ok we need a little more info. you said your phone is flashed. flashed to what? boost? metro? if that is the case all you need to do is flash a custom rom that has the latest software version cooked in. depending on who you are flashed to, you might have to do some extra steps if you want to get mms and data working.
also if you can provide us with what rom you are on now?
what is your hboot version? power off then press and hold power+vol down. this will take you to the bootloader. at the top will be your hboot version. if you can please provide us with everything that you see there.

I believe that you can flash a custom rom such as MikG v3.11 which comes with its own kernel...

Can we flash over the old ROM?
But before we do that, I/we would like to know what kind of recovery you have.
We recommend Amon RA....if you have clockwork recovery, that can be changed.
While in the bootloader screen hilight recovery and press power to get to recovery and let us know what that says. k?

If you are s-off, which I think you said you were, download this file...

After it is downloaded to computer (or phone) rename the file to PC36IMG.zip.
If you have windows, it will hide that file extension, so be sure not to
name it PC36IMG.zip.zip or it will not work.
After renaming it, transfer file to the root (top level) of sd card. Do not put it in any folder. (it will not work if in a folder)
After you put it on sd card, and it is named correctly, power down phone completely....wait a few moments, the boot into bootloader (hold volume down & press power button)
As the bootloader screen comes up, it will auto detect that file and will ask you to update.....select yes...it will do its thing then ask you to reboot...say no and click on recovery while in bootloader....this will bring you to your new recovery named Amon Ra v2.3 hausmod.
Once there you can reboot.
