Hello I am new to the forum. I just want to make sure that questions related to my Android ZTE Merit I bought from StraighTalk belongs in this forum. My service is AT&T but it is a StraightTalk phone.

I love the phone, but my major complaint is that I am always running low on space and I am unable to move many of my apps to the SD card

I've only had this phone a few days and I had the same problem. None of the built in apps can be copied to the SD card so your best bet is uninstalling the updates for the apps you don't use and turning off automatic updating. Also powering off and back on will delete the temporary install data from updates and downloads.

You can root your phone with these directions:
[Root] ZTE z990g aka ZTE Merit

Here's another link with some helpful info
but use the above link for the rooting process, as there are errors in the 2nd ink. (the link in this paragraph.....but it still contains useful info) And yes, this works fine for the Straight Talk ZTE Merit.

Personally I prefer to transfer apps to SDcard with Apps2SD. I have 30 user apps installed on my Merit and maintain about 45 megs of free internal memory. One of the purposes of rooting is so that you can get rid of the factory apps that you don't use/want/like and free up internal memory for the apps from the market that you prefer.

Look for the "Clockwork Mod" installation in the second link. That is an absolute MUST that will make rooting life easier. Make sure you back-up your phone's original set-up before you go swapping ROM's or anything.

A couple more apps I would highly recommend besides the Clockwork Mod (also known as CWM) and Apps2SD is Titanium backup and and Rom Toolbox, all available from the android market.(Google Play Store)

You will have to have a little patience when going through the process of setting up the Android SDK on your computer and getting ADB to work. It's sort of a trail and error process for a lot of people. But it makes the phone much more useable and enjoyable when it's all said and done.

BE CAREFUL with ROM Toolbox, Start by slowly messing with thing, it's a powerful app that can mess ypur system up if you're not careful. Like Squidly said, back your phone up in case things get out of hand.

I believe "ROM Manager" is the app that everybody is wary of, although ROM Toolbox could probably equally jack-up a phone as well.

To be honest, I only use my own versions of the factory ROM, and I do NOT use anything except CWM to switch from one to the other. I've got an additional comotose Merit by reason of straying from CWM and installing a different Recovery image on it.

Once a person has the CWM Recovery.img installed on the Merit/Avail, they do well to not change it.

hey Squidly, do you mind taking that phone apart? I could use a picture of the board for a wallpaper.

Also, can you access the shell on that phone?

Sure I'll shoot a pic in a few. I have Terminal Emulator installed, if that's what you mean by shell.

Edit: Duh....you mean on the comatose phone. Was thinking of it when talking about the photo but for some reason thought of my working phone with "shell".

No. All I can access on the softbricked Merit is the Android System Recovery. It asks only for an Update.zip.

I wouldn't want to take it apart much more than this because then little pieces start falling out everywhere.

I can wholly agree that ROM Toolbox can and will screw the phone up, especially with a sim card that is passworded. Do not change font style unless you dont have to enter a password to access the sim or phone.

WOW thought I did all my research on the ZTE Merit. First of all I want to Thank You for all this info. So, 2 days ago I purchased 2 ZTE Merit phones only to find out I can load my contacts and Square and that's it-I can't get anything to the SD card. I understand I need to have the phone rooted and it's not widely publicized, in my area, who would be knowledgeable enough to do this for me. There's is no way I would attempt it myself. Should I ask my computer guys? Do you know of someone that I can send these phones to and get it done so I can just use the apps I need. Thanks again for all your info!

Howdy. Welcome to the group. While, Im sure there are people out there that will do it for you, but, why pay someone to do something so simple? This forum reads almost step by step how to root your model. I have the Avail z990, and never had to hook to a computer to do it. The folks here are all very helpful. I dont like to say "the infos out there, find it". But, reading the forum Merit- all things root, should help.

I have a question with this phone that maybe one of you could walk me through. I'm receiving a "Network error, check network." Well, not exactly sure how too correct that. Any assistance would be appreciated. My first smart phone and I feel like an idiot. Lol
