The Nexus 7 Flash Debate

I tried downloading it from the store last night. It said it wasn't compatible with my device.

Adobe dropped support. I have heard that side loading, as suggested above, might work, but could be unstable. I you try it, let us know how it goes. I would guess that even side loaded it will not work in Chrome though.

Chrome doesn't support plugins at all, so it won't work unless someone has tried loading the "Browser" app from, say, the Galaxy Nexus release of Jelly Bean as well.

I got my Nexus 7 3 days ago and absolutely love it. Chrome works really well but as we all know Adobe is halting flash support for android devices. I sideloaded a flash apk file yesterday, and flash still did not work on Chrome, so, I downloaded dolphin browser and had no problems with flash sites.

This morning there was a dolphin update and in the update it basically told me flash has been disabled within the dolphin browser. The ability to turn it on or off was grayed out, even though I have the apk file downloaded.

Does anybody have any workaround to be able to use flash on this device?

I hate to be first to say this but...that's -messed- up so does this tell us that Adobe is pressuring other software publishers to remove support too?

Have you tried sideloading the apk?

btw, I'd welcome you to AF, but you have no name. Oh well, you can unforgive me.:D

Yeah, they are really trying to prevent the use of flash, which doesn't make sense. End support if you want, but don't deny us the use of it's applications when we all know they are easily supported. I understand flash is being used less and less and will fade out sometime soon...but come one, doesn't the youtube app have like 10% of all desktop available youtube vids?

Well the writing was on the wall a while ago, so the thing to do is figure out how to do without it.

You could keep trying to drag apps backwards, but it will be a losing battle ultimately.

The heck with adobe and their stupid flash.
Who needs 'em?

Download FireFox with Adobe Flash. It works like a champ.

To be honest I think that this is intentionally done so that html5 is incorporated much faster. Adobe saw that once they keep support for flash developers have no incentive to develop html5 and now this is the push to do so. Personally I find this to be a good thing because in an year after full support is gone every video will be html5 based and it will finally play without any issues. I am aware that phones can play flash video ok but it is not as good as within the video app on your phone. We are only to see what will happen in reality though most things are definitely not what we expect so I can only be hopeful isn't that what we always have at the end of the day :-)

I've sideloaded Flash, w/the Xscope browser. It KIND of works, but it's twitchy. It will crash if you try full screen, and sometimes the controls are unresponsive. Was worse in Dolphin (they have disabled Flash in yesterday's release). So... yes and no. You can get it to work, but it's not pretty.

On the XDA forums you can get the apk files for flash 11.1 as well as the previous version of dolphin and current version of Firefox (both of which support flash). The most recent version of dolphin disabled flash, hence the need or the previous version.

I have these installed and they run nicely. Only thing is you have to watch out for updates in the future and not let dolphin auto update or you'll lose flash support again.

I use them to access online texts, so can't speak to their effectiveness and stability for anything else.

You don't happen to have a link for the thread with the last but one Dolphin HD by any chance? :beerglass:<chink>:beerglass: :)

Yeah, however will they slow our browsers down with ads if Flash goes away?

My heart bleeds for them. :smokingsomb:
Not sure if you mean commercial ads or those ads that a lot of old people have "your browser is no longer supported" In the first case, ad block plus, buddy! I wish that there was a better mobile ad blocker though

Just a quick note. I discovered that, sideloading Flash, then installing Firefox Aurora (download from Mozilla), with the add-on "Phony" (UA switcher) set to "Firefox Desktop", has been nearly perfect with flash... including full screen and features. Have been happily watching Amazon Prime Instant Videos without issue!
