Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

1 Ghz is enough for me and is more than enough to do daily tasks. I'm not planning on running CS4 Photoshop on my phone or watching/recording 1080p videos. Hell my last smartphone had a 200 Mhz processor. I agree with what was mentioned about the dual core processor, the next step would be 1.5 Ghz but I wouldn't even know what to do with it.

I agree completely with mogulust and SoFLO and I already added my 2 cents in post #643 which pretty much summed up my feelings about being outdone by someone else.

The EVO is going to be a great phone and nobody will be able to touch it for quite a long time. Am I disappointed that it's not being released tomorrow? Maybe, but I can wait a little longer. I think it would be best if they had all the bugs or details worked out first.

I think we have CTIA to thank for learning about the phone in the first place. If it weren't for that, we probably wouldn't know anything about it until late spring and that would of killed me more than this does. At least we have pictures, videos, specs and there will be a lot of coverage in the media.

I'm a happy man :):):)

@WhiteNoise:
What do you think you can do with a device that has a 1.3ghz processor that you can't do with 1ghz? The answer is that there would be no noticeable difference. Like mentioned above, the next major upgrade in processors will be dual core 1.5ghz, and that will bring 1080p video recording/output, and most likely first on a larger tablet.

And why do you care if the hype dies down about the phone between now and its release? Are you more interested in using the device, or having it increase your bragging rights to people on the street? I personally don't care if there are better devices announced after I get the SS, because that won't change the phone's capabilities, which are groundbreaking and anstounding.

If I believed that a cellphone would make me cool, I would have bought an iphone. No one cares what kind of phone I use. Currently I have a Hero and I hate the lag. There are no roms or updates that will completely fix that. It was the best android phone available when I purchased it and I am purely interested in having the best device possible. You are kidding yourself if you don't think 300 more mhz is a big deal on a cell phone, that is more than half the total processing power of the Hero. Hype = more phones sold and a faster 4G rollout.

So what exactly happened today? Did they not demo the phone officially? All that we learned today compared to yesterday was that it wont cost extra for 4G? I cant even find more videos compared to last night

I thought it was also pretty good news that Hesse mentioned in his keynote this morning that 4g service wouldn't be an expensive add-on to existing plans, but rather just be a free added perk.

Also it's looking like the WIFI hotspot application won't involve an extra tethering fee like Verizon's does, since it's possible to do it for free with a rooted android device already anyway, I think they're just opening the gate and letting people do it legitimately for free. (Maybe also to entice Verizon customers to switch over when they realize they're paying for features which could be free.)

One thing I'm really hoping for is that by the time it's released for sale there will be a good video chat and video conferencing program to take advantage of the front camera and high data speeds. Do any of you current android users know if there's a skype program for android, or is that exclusive to Verizon with their voip deal?

I am slightly confused as to what happened today. Im on night float at the hospital so I sleep during the days, sorry. Was there no demonstration of the phone? No hands on use on the bigscreen in good light? Is that not going to happen? I pictured today to be sort of like steve jobs going over the features of the iphone, but I guess it wasnt. Sorry im so out of the loop, I havent slept much

Dan Hesse, CEO of Sprint sat with Steve Largent in a situation somewhat like you might see when Jay Leno interviews someone, especially in the 10:00 o'clock format. After he was done, Bill Marrow, CEO of Clearwire came out and talked with Steve. Both men are very intelligent and well spoken, but their emphasis was on WiMAX. I expected that from Bill Marrow, but I was hoping for more about EVO. Nothing specific was announced like the release date, pricing or any of that. It was mostly a sales pitch for WiMAX. Dan Hesse talked quite a bit about medical apps and the benefits that EVO and WiMAX could have in the medical field. One scenario he brought up was an Ambulance EMT being able to video conference with a doctor at the hospital so they would have better advance notice about an emergency situation. Bill Marrow worked for a big telecom in Japan, I believe and he also worked for Vodaphone in England. He brings a lot of experience to the table and he made me feel pretty confident in the way things are heading. There was also talk about the different 4G environments merging for the benefit of the industry and to try to make smart phones world phones. Other than that, there were no phone demos or anything like that.

Edit: Mogulust just reminded me about was said about tethering. Verizon is against it, because it clogs the pipes under 3G, but it's different under 4G according to Hesse. He said with the EVO, you would be able to automatically tether 8 devices to it. At this point, I can't be sure if that was with the Overdrive or not, but I don't think that was mentioned in the same breath.

Here's an article from PC Magazine about both interviews.

The fact that 4G was not going to cost more was essentially explained yesterday in the article i linked that talked about the 4:30 release time, the ability to change to LTE if need be and about how they wanted to promote use and that capping it or charging more would be counterproductive to getting 4G access to as many people as possible. So really nothing new came from today.

I also agree with what many have said about a phone not being a status thing but rather a really fun thing to play with!

I am greedy and want it NOW, but either way, at least we have a name and know it really is coming. My dream a couple nights ago about it being a toy like phone was a real bummer .....Hahahahaha

Could one of Sprint's reasons for not releasing the Evo now be because they don't want to virtually make the Nexus One sales nonexistant? If they were to release both phones at roughly the same time, most people that were set on the Nexus One would likely decide on the Evo instead, at least in my opinion. I do think that they are cutting into Nexus One sales anyway with the introduction of the Evo, but I guess in a way Sprint knows that they will make far more money from the Evo than the Nexus One anyway, which I guess in a way refutes my original question. Oh, Bill, I just wanted to say that I appreciate you putting this whole thread together. I would not have been able to follow the Evo as thoroughly without it. Thanks.

I was wondering what anyone thinks about June 21 for a release date? This is the first day of summer, so Sprint wouldn't be totally lying about a summer release date. But it also gives them a decent amount of time to make sure everything is 100% before its release.

I didn't notice the grid pattern either. I think I like it as well, not too over-the-top. I think it would be cool if there's extra customized covers kind of like how Palm does with the Pixi.

I admit I'm still a sucker for the faux leather battery cover for the Bold :o

I would like to remind everybody that cell phones or any other portable battery operated device can only do so much before you exceed practical applications with the current batt. technology.

I just purchased a toshiba laptop with 10" screen, 1.66 Ghz, 2g ram because it offered 9 hr. batt. This was more important for me to use a laptop / tablet device , than power a much bigger / faster one for 2-3 hr.

The smartphones are going to hit the same wall with batt. being the weak link for now. Yes, they can build them much faster but what good is a cell phone with 1 hr. batt. ? Same problem with these big laptops that have to be plugged in all the time. They are power houses and they require power. Much more than a batt. can offer and still be portable.

Everybody wants the phone to do it all and then they are going to complain about batt. life being 3 hr. and ask why sprint would sell a phone you can only use 3 hr.

People loose track of what is practical with the current tech. wanting more and more...

Ask yourself if you would rather have 1.5 Ghz blah, blah, blah with a 3 hr. batt. or a phone that will last 8 hr. or should I say 6 hr. because I doubt it will last 8 hr.now if you turn it on.

I will purchase this phone when it's avail. and be very happy with it. If I need more than it offers I will use my laptop. Everything is give and take to reach a practical balance.

Sorry to bring everybody down and back to reality but the focus of who is going to trump this phone vs what is practical needed to be addressed.

Maybe we could wear a solar panel hat : )

I deleted my post because I saw in subsequent photos that the grid pattern was coming from their light source. It appeared on his hand and the other phone, so looks it like the Supersonic is all black, with no pattern at this point.

At least you can bring along a spare battery if you know you'll be away from a power source for more than an average day away from home. I never understood how everyone with an iphone could stand to have no option to use a spare.

Faster processor definitely does not equal more power consumption. A lot of these newer processors and chipsets consume less power than older architectures.

+1 on this. all hardware goody will do no good if the basic features fail to perform well. Battery is defintely top of the list of basic features.

I read many posts here that compared the iphone. what makes the iphone popular is not its hardware. no doubt, EVO 4G hardware can run circles around iphone. iphone popularity is its software, very well implemented and its app ecosystem. virtually every company made an app/site specifically for it. all customed app together with iphone OS/platform create great experience for majority of users.

anyone can come out with a better hardware, now or near future. but no one can create an ecosystem of apps and user experience that apple did. not a single American company can compete against Asian electronic gadget companies execept Apple. Sony, Samsung, panasonic, etc can't compete against Apple. As an American, we should be very proud of Apple.

disclaimer: I don't own any Apple products.

we love this EVO 4G, and it is in its own class. but let not post wrong perception of other phones.

Something tells me that Hesses and his crew are holding out on something, something really big with this phone from the interviews he has made so far. If my hunch is right, it will surely be kick butt. But it can only be confirmed once we get the FCC docs. (Soothing infinite minds, chatter actually really delivers).

This is the best phone out there hands down. Finally we get some respect (and by respect I mean finally get a really good phone much like the ones that always get sold in Asia). Its funny how the stock in both Clearwire, HTC and Sprint shot up since Hesses' announcement. Go Sprint.

TS out

my HTC TP2 has 1500mA battery with 3.6" screen. EVO 4G got the same battery but has bigger screen and run more radio, voice radio, 3G radio, and 4G radio, wifi, etc.

I will be suprised if EVO can last as long as my TP2.

Can always up it to the 2000mha battery that fits into the stock housing. My boss uses it in his touch pro 2 with about 30% more capacity.

On a separate note why do you think they went with micro usb for charging/syncing? I mean that HDMI out is as big as a mini USB.

Micro USB is the new stardard for portable devices. I believe in Europe, it is mandated that devices have ha Micro USB port.
