So, someone posted this on Facebook and I was amazed at how many different answers people were giving. The whole thing looked pretty straight forward to me so I figured I would post it up for all the "right brains" here on the forum.

Keep in mind, we are just talking about black lines here. If there is any ghosting in the image, that doesn't count.

Please answer in the poll. If your answer doesn't match any of the numbers in the poll then please add it with an explanation as to how you found it.

Spoiler, please click only after making your own count and voting in the poll -
16 squares in each of the top and bottom halves = 32
(8 primary squares, 4 subs, 1 formed by the four subs, and three 2x2 squares = 16)
number of 3x3 squares = 4
number of 4x4 squares = 1
number of 2x2 squares across the center =3

That's 40. Don't see how some found 42.

And the answer is visible in Tapatalk or if you quote this, but otherwise it's %1$s until we fix the forum error.

I have 2 answers

16 because 4x4=16. The 2 middle columns are broken up. There is 1 mini square in each one in the 2 middle columns. I don't count the big ones in the middle cause they break off from the mini squares thus not making them squares anymore. More like L shaped figures. :p

17 if I also count the big square.

And here I thought you were posting some really bizarre math equation. ;)

What do you mean by ghosting?

If there can be no lines inside the square, that is, each square has to be hollow (white only inside), then there are only 16 "true" squares.

If a square can have lines inside it, then there are 36 squares. Nevermind, I just saw the other 4 squares! 40 is my vote!

There are 40 squares.
4 by 4 squares=1
3 by 3 squares= 4
2 by 2 squares=9
1 by 1 squares= 16
1+4+9+16 is 30. But we didn't add the two intersecting squares the middle which is 32 plus the four squares within each square is 40.I tried to explain on fb that this the answer but we have stupidity among us.

I always feel like I missed one (or many)....

Think I got this one though ;)

hex spoiler....
0x28 (so convert to hex to decimal or do the figuring out yourself for answer)
;)

ghosting in the image could have been eliminated if the person who originated this image had the sense not to save it as a JPEG.

40 squares.
