Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

my HTC TP2 has 1500mA battery with 3.6" screen. EVO 4G got the same battery but has bigger screen and run more radio, voice radio, 3G radio, and 4G radio, wifi, etc.

I will be suprised if EVO can last as long as my TP2.
You might be right about the battery, but the 1GHz Snapdragon is supposed to be much more power efficient than the older Qualcomm chips are.

Recently, I watched a podcast at C/net where they were talking about these new universal battery chargers. I didn't fully understand what they were saying, but apparently you don't even have to have the phone plugged into to the charger as long as you're in close proximity. I like that idea. A lot of times I have my phone plugged into USB so it can charge while I'm at my computer, but I've been known to walk away and leave the phone behind.

I thought it was also pretty good news that Hesse mentioned in his keynote this morning that 4g service wouldn't be an expensive add-on to existing plans, but rather just be a free added perk.

Also it's looking like the WIFI hotspot application won't involve an extra tethering fee like Verizon's does, since it's possible to do it for free with a rooted android device already anyway, I think they're just opening the gate and letting people do it legitimately for free. (Maybe also to entice Verizon customers to switch over when they realize they're paying for features which could be free.)

One thing I'm really hoping for is that by the time it's released for sale there will be a good video chat and video conferencing program to take advantage of the front camera and high data speeds. Do any of you current android users know if there's a skype program for android, or is that exclusive to Verizon with their voip deal?
I have a question and I in no way mean any disrespect but is there any credible information on 4g being a no cost addition to everything data plans? I'm asking because I have a tendency to get really excited about things and then let down. Thanks in advance.

yes there are several articles out now that have said that 4G will NOT cost more, I am too tired to refer you to specific posts but im sure someone will get that info to you.

Here is another article that states a 2H2010 release date confirmation and I have seen three articles including this one that all state they have heard it will not cost more than $200 with a two year commitment? Seems like a fair price to me, but I really dont want to wait till july or later.

I'm just referring to what Dan Hesse himself said today in his keynote. I was watching it streaming live, and he very clearly compared 4g vs. 3g to cable tv and hi def channels. He said that the hi def channels are a great perk, but that the cable company charges extra for them, and then said that the 4g data improvements are a perk thrown in for free. However later he was talking about how in the distant future your data plan price will be based on how many gigabytes of data you use per month so things will change eventually.

I wish there was a recording of the stream or a transcript so we can hold him to what he said and sue for false advertising if they do try to do an additional $10 4g surcharge or something when the phone's released...

Wi-Fi Charging is an option...BUT you still have to carry extra stuff ( chargers ) around to charge your portable wireless device. A extra batt. would be easier / smaller than this item and many other options like it.

CES 2010: Invention promises to harness WiFi signals for wireless battery charging - News - PC Authority

Consider this

How many times have you been talking on your phone and told someone my batt. is going dead, I will have to call you back later ? The batt. is one of the most import items of any portable device. If this happens every time you use your phone because the batt. won't keep up with all the new toys added... What's the point ?

I/we just dropped our home phone and switched totally to cell phones. Now imagine using this new powerful phone for buss / important call. You have bluetooth headset on using several phone features while on a call if not video and boom, batt warning starts flashing. You start to scramble around looking for a charger before everything falls apart while trying to talk. The only thing that makes people more upset is prob. dropped calls or poor call quality.

I currently have an extended life batt. on my cell and it made a big diff. but increased the weight also. How many people are going to say the EVO is now to heavy with the batt. needed to operate this device compared to lessor smartphones ?

It's easy to say, oh I will just buy another batt. and most will but now you have to carry that extra batt. all the time. If the phone is not at FULL charge when you start your day or as the batt. ages, you will be lucky to get 3 hrs. How are you going to charge the back up batt. ? I have noticed laptop batt. loose 10-13% turned OFF ( not stand by ) over night and that is new. An older batt is going to loose more.

New tech. uses less power... I read the Droid last 7 hr. and if you use the phone it will be much less. Now bump the specs up to 4.3 screen with all the extra stuff EVO has sucking the batt. down and I bet you can't get 4 hrs. of real time use before you need a charge on a used batt.

I have a clamshell LG that last for days under normal use. ( Depending on signal strength ) People switching from phones lasting 1-3 days will be very disappointed to get 5 hrs.

My point is you will not make everybody happy, no matter the specs.

Come up with a practical batt. solution or wireless charger built into the phone and then we can talk about adding more stuff.

I've been reading about all the new smartphones over the past couple years and after all the hype wears off, most everybody starts bashing the devices batt. life

Use this phone as Wi-Fi hub for other devices... Think about what this phone is capable of and you will start to understand just how power hungry it could become. The sprint Overdrive hub only last 3 hr. per charge with a 1830 mAh Batt.

More things to consider... It is after all suppose to be a portable phone, not a tablet, notebook, laptop, etc.

Dan Hesse, CEO of Sprint sat with Steve Largent in a situation somewhat like you might see when Jay Leno interviews someone, especially in the 10:00 o'clock format. After he was done, Bill Marrow, CEO of Clearwire came out and talked with Steve. Both men are very intelligent and well spoken, but their emphasis was on WiMAX. I expected that from Bill Marrow, but I was hoping for more about EVO. Nothing specific was announced like the release date, pricing or any of that. It was mostly a sales pitch for WiMAX. Dan Hesse talked quite a bit about medical apps and the benefits that EVO and WiMAX could have in the medical field. One scenario he brought up was an Ambulance EMT being able to video conference with a doctor at the hospital so they would have better advance notice about an emergency situation. Bill Marrow worked for a big telecom in Japan, I believe and he also worked for Vodaphone in England. He brings a lot of experience to the table and he made me feel pretty confident in the way things are heading. There was also talk about the different 4G environments merging for the benefit of the industry and to try to make smart phones world phones. Other than that, there were no phone demos or anything like that.

Edit: Mogulust just reminded me about was said about tethering. Verizon is against it, because it clogs the pipes under 3G, but it's different under 4G according to Hesse. He said with the EVO, you would be able to automatically tether 8 devices to it. At this point, I can't be sure if that was with the Overdrive or not, but I don't think that was mentioned in the same breath.

Here's an article from PC Magazine about both interviews.

I wish there were video of him talking about its medical applications. Ill be a physician in 14 months, and the biggest downside I can see from switching from my iphone to android is the ridiculous lack of medical apps available on android. I am really hoping that with HTC releasing so many new desirable android based devices, the apps will start to flood in.

I know you asked about medical apps quite awhile back and you wondered if there were any. I can't remember much more than what I stated, but Hesse did say there were going to be a lot of medical apps. One example he gave was that people would be able to cough into the phone and a diagnosis could be made from that. He also said there would be reminders that could tell someone when to take their pills. He also said with a WiMAX phone, that more things will be done remotely through video conferencing. I'm having a little trouble remembering all of it, but he talked quite awhile about medical, so yes, he made me think a lot would be done in the medical area.

You won't sue for diddly. Be real. Data charges will be clearly defined before this phone ever becomes available. What's with some people expecting something...make that EVERYTHING for nothing?!

If I get an unlocked HTC EVO 4G, could I use it on Verizon (without 4G)?

I don't think so, from what I've heard from Verizon it can't be done. Now weather or not it can be done you probably need some one who will tell you the truth. I'm current;y with Verizon and I was thinking of getting an unlocked version and they told me no.................. so if you know someone you trust thru Verizon that will be honest enough then I say "keep me posted" really don't want to leave them but if you can't run this phone on them then I'm bailing ship when this comes out.

I'm not expecting everything for nothing, but I am assuming that when the CEO of Sprint says outright in very clear words that the data plan I'm already paying for won't be increased because the phone I buy has 4g capability, that that's the case 3 months later when I buy the phone. You seem pretty worked up about this, maybe you should do some yoga and chill the **** out?

It wouldn't surprise me at all, to see Verizon did get a phone based on EVO, because Sprint and Verizion are both CDMA. Last October the Sprint HTC Hero was released, then in November, Verizon released the equivalent HTC Droid Eris.

If Verizon were to get a phone like this, it won't have 4G, but it still might be 4G capable and available when Verizon starts getting Long Term Evolution (LTE) built out.

The HTC EVO is just the beginning, but it shows where the world is heading. At CTIA yesterday, Both Dan Hesse of Sprint and Bill Morrow of Clearwire expressed an interest in merging WiMAX and LTE for the good of the industry and for the sake of making smart phones world phones. I really liked hearing that, but I read this morning that the president of Verizon said "no way".

What gets me is that both WiMAX and LTE are pretty close and from what Morrow said yesterday, it wouldn't be that difficult to change over to either one. No matter how you look at it, 4G is the future and is necessary for a phone like the EVO to realize its full potential. For the good of the industry and for the good of their customers world wide, I wish they would get their stuff together and stop fighting over technologies. Just think what it could do for the advancement of the industry if the major carriers were all working together to build out a compatible network. Heck, we'd all have 4G in no time.

I just wanted to know b/c Verizon will never announce the Incredible.

It seems to me the people in the Incredible forum are almost trying to will that phone into existence, but I have no doubt that a phone similar to the EVO will eventually be released on Verizon. In the meantime, for the sake of all the people in that forum, I hope they get the phone they've all been championing for so long.

My belief is that the Incredible isn't likely to be anywhere near as capably as the EVO. We already know the leaked specs aren't that great, but what I'm seeing is nightly TV ads for the Moto Droid and heavy promotion for that phone. Some will argue the Droid is the best Android phone on the market and its still a fairly new phone, so I can't imagine Verizon bringing out a really, really good phone to replace the Droid just yet.

A lot of people over there seem to think the Incredible will be announced with the next two weeks, even though there wasn't any mention of it at CTIA. For their sake, I wish some official word would come out. I still think it will be more of an upgrade from the Eris, not the Droid. If that is true, there are other ways of going. I mentioned to one of the guys visiting from the Incredible forum yesterday that they could always switch to Sprint for the EVO when it's released. Most of the people over there seem to like the EVO, but not on Sprint. There's nothing wrong with Sprint though. I tend to think the Sprint bashing is mostly just propaganda and I have to ask, would you rather have a great phone or would you rather be able to say you're a Verizon customer?

I know this is off the topic of EVO but... I know that shipment of Incredible is expected to arrive in U.S. at the beginning of April and that expected launch date is currently slated towards the end of April. Obviously Verizon has the final say on the launch date...

I'm not going to argue which phone has better specs. The Incredible has not been officially announced yet, if it ever will be. There will be other threads to argue which is the better phone. I have never had bad signal on Verizon. I can't say the same for any of my friends on other networks. In fact most of the people I know have switched to Verizon for the signal strength. Some of them were on Sprint/Nextel. I just want a cool phone to use on my awesome network. Right now the only officially announced cool phone is the EVO. I want to use it on Verizon or I want Verizon to announce a cool phone that they haven't gimped (i.e. turned off tethering).

I follow this news with a sad heart because where I work, I could not get coverage with a droid on verizon. Unfortunately, the building I'm in has a fair amount of shielding, and due to AT&T having repeaters in it, it's the only service that would get signal. While I'm in LA and could look forward to 4G, 4G signals are going to attenuate more than 3G/2G signals, so it won't get any better :(

If you watch Intel's How WiMAX Works video, they address your issue. The idea is to use "fill-in" repeaters which will improve the WiMAX signal inside buildings. This video is well worth watching for anyone interested in WiMAX. You will also find a link to it in post# 1.

Yeah, I looked up the white paper to get an idea of what 4G versus 3G signal strength will be like. I'm basically at the mercy of where they choose to place the towers. Since I'm so close to LAX, if they put one there, I'd be golden.

You going to sue if the specs change too??
