Yeah they are only using 3g for Skype. But to say its because of wifi and low quality calls is total BS. Verizon is protecting their profits and thats the bottom line. If you could use Skype over wifi you don't need a data plan to use it ... you could just buy an unlocked device load up skype and call. I have a Skype account that lets me make calls to actual phones and I do it over wifi and 3g all the time on my netbook .... with video .... what gives.

You can do that know. I fail to see how what VZW is offering affects that. Hell, I can make a Skype call on my iPod touch...

Considering it's only going to be sold on google.com/phone and not in Verizon stores I'm gonna go with no.
Yes, but it would make sense that an HTC rep might stop in to show off a phone that Google intends to sell for use on Verizon's network. Anyway, that's what I've been thinking.

If you use Skype over the Wifi, then yo aren't consuming 3g data and thus Verizon can't bill you for data usage. I have no idea what the phone plans are, but if I were selling 3g plans, I would want to have my customers use as much 3g as possible, to put more $$ in my pockets. Verizon can't make a penny off of your WiFi use, as far as I know.

It doesn't matter how much data you use when you have a Verizon smartphone because the $30 charge is mandatory and allows unlimited use. Whether you view one website or the whole internetz, you pay the same amount.

CITA: Verizon Nexus One Is The HTC Incredible

Verizon Nexus One

The jig is up as Android Central managed to get a snapshot of one of Verizon's online systems showing us the specs of the soon to be released Verizon Nexus One. And guess what, it utlizes HTC's sense UI.
Why is Verizon's Nexus One different than the original?

We're not sure really. The Verizon Nexus One, which will still only be available through Google's store (snapshot confirmed that as well), shows a different set of features. With Sense UI now available on the Verizon Nexus One, it can mean a few things:
  • Google is allowing carriers to select their own builds for their versions of the Nexus One.
  • The Verizon Nexus One is actually the HTC Incredible in red.
  • Or there was a major screw up and Verizon needs to better train their staff on Google's Nexus One options.
So now the Verizon Nexus One will not be all that different than the HTC Incredible if both are going to be utilizing the Sense UI.

Snapshot

CITA 2010

With both the Verizon Nexus One and HTC Incredible being no-shows at CITA, we got a feeling Clark Kent thought Superman was going to be there and vice versa. Well at least HTC Evo 4G showed up to the party and flexed its guns.

just got this on google alert

Finkle and Einhorn..... Finkle and Einhorn......

The reason Montana reacted the way he did is because he's been harrased, ridiculed and basically told the same things for the past few days. He's told me some of the things that have been sent to him privately. The guy is worn out over this box, and he shouldn't be being treated like he has been. I know a liar and a troll when I see one, and trust me, Montana is FAR from one. People just need to let the box go, and if you mention it, just mention it as a "have you heard anything" kind of post. Not a "the box is a lie" post. Because, to Montana, that basically looks like you're calling him a liar, and he's not one.

Its a friggin message board! Do you think when the same person kills me 5 times in Bad Company 2 (which happens) I tell them to **** of and die a slow painful death? NO! Has anyone actually threatened Montana over the box? Has anyone said something along the lines to Montana that he should duck off and die a slow painful death? I'll lay money the answer to both of those is no.
So Montana put forth a box came from HTC. The only mention of this box is on this thread. Engadget can get wind of a Verizon manager meeting, but boxes going out to Verizon stores from HTC America? Not a peep. So naturally people have doubts. Look at my twitter feed and it says I tweet from Tehran. Am I in Tehran? No (I changed to **** with ahmacrazyguys attempts at censorship fyi). Its that easy to BS on the internet. You want to say Montana is honenst, fine. I, along with many others have no proof either which way. So if he wanted to mention the box, you mention the box and shut up about it unless there is something new. If you want to keep bringing it up people will harass you for it and a simple play off the Portal joke doesn't deserve Montana's response! If he can't handle ribbing on a message board without resorting to that kind of response perhaps his time would be better served in a mental professional's office rather then in front of his computer.
Because here is the kicker. Nothing says that box has jack to do with the Incredible. Somehow I would imagine HTC America has something to do with the CDMA version of the Nexus One as well.

I don't know their specific reason for not allowing it via WiFi. Since it's obviously a feature Skype supports, there must have been a very compelling reason no to.
Yes, I believe the following quote describes VZW's compelling reason...

If you use Skype over the Wifi, then yo aren't consuming 3g data and thus Verizon can't bill you for data usage. I have no idea what the phone plans are, but if I were selling 3g plans, I would want to have my customers use as much 3g as possible, to put more $$ in my pockets. Verizon wants control (as always). The degraded voice over wifi reason is crap, and definitely not the primary reason for cutting the feature out. :(

It doesn't matter how much data you use when you have a Verizon smartphone because the $30 charge is mandatory

Precisely. The VZW/Skype partnership is for taking voice calls via 3G and delivering them to Skype users. That's all. Before, you were only able to use Skype via WiFi. But not everyone has access to free WiFi.

True enough BUT when you buy an UNLIMITED data package for $30/mo. they get your $30 if you use it or don't. I'm with those that don't get it. But maybe that's just me. They don't get a cent more if I use Skype or don't.

But what's stopping you from getting a CDMA Nexus One or some other unlocked device and using Skype over WiFi if they don't lock it down to 3g? More importantly is that without wifi the amount of roaming charges you will rack up when out of the country. Not that this really matters because I am sure it will be hacked soon enough. I'm just saying the reason they did it is to protect profit.

Look at your pic, study what is wrong, and slap yourself several times. This is something else we've already gone over. The URL for the Nexus is wrong. Its google.com/phone as in 1 phone, singular as in not many. This page has changed and now shows the N1 without Sense as well.

Alright think about it for a second. What if the verizon nexus one IS different than the AT&T. Also, consider there are rumors (or news from google? not sure) that tre ill be a N2 with a keyboard eventually. Would it not make sense to change the url to phones?

I doubt the incredible is the verizon nexus one, just saying.

In your opinion. They obviously felt differently and it's their network.

And again, you don't pay extra for using Skype via 3G. So that throws the money argument out the window...

someone did online chat with verizon and the guy said they are selling it in stores
I honestly don't think they know at this point and are just assuming it will, other people have said the CSR's and etc don't know until the last second.

If you need to use Skype via WiFi, then get the regular Skype mobile app. Really, it's not that big of a deal.

long time reader first time poster:

I talked to my local Verizon "guy" in AF Utah March 12th. He said:

He has seen testers with the Incredible in the distribution center.
It is Incredible! ! !
They (VerizonWireless Distributions centers) will have it for in house testing for three weeks.
If all goes well the go ahead will be given to production to . . .. well produce.
He did not say where in the process it was then but worst case scenario 6 weeks right.

Either way I think we're close.

Major thanks to all who've contributed useful information. I hope this post is one of them

GlowingMoose

Hate to toot my own horn but I think that this is sounding more and more probable.

Oops I also msg'd after that and stated that he also said that it's about three weeks for production hence the 6 weeks

OK, a video game. Again, I doubt a guy who lives in the mountains of Montana and is a professional journalist plays a lot of video games. Personally, I've never heard of the game.

Funny, google "the box is a lie" and whats the second result you get? A reference to Half Life. Another game in the orange box (ok technically its half life 2).

the n2 is coming out this summer
