My screen just cracked. Do I have to unroot before getting replaced?

Hello all, my VZW Galaxy Nexus screen just cracked about an hour ago. I have insurance and want to take it over to the Verizon store to get it replaced. Thing is, I'm rooted and unlocked running Pete's Bugless Beast (the best rom i've ran ever, so smooth and not buggy at all!)

Should I unroot and lock the phone back up before exchanging my phone or will it not matter?

Absolutely -unroot. If they determine your phone is rooted the warranty/insurance is null/void:(
 
Quick question, do I have to download 4.0.4 and then unroot and lock or will it go back to 4.0.4 on its own through OTA updates?

Sorta kinda.

I've seen other users mention that Samsung would "note" that your phone was unlocked/rooted for future reference, but that does not actually void your warranty. Technically, at least in the US, the manufacturer must show that your modification caused the failure in order to deny warranty claims. In other words, if you rooted your phone and bricked it, they could deny your warranty claim. If you rooted your phone and the power button stopped working, they could not deny the warranty on a physical defect.

That said, I would unroot and re-lock just to avoid any trouble.

If you can upgrade to the S3 for $100 thats cheaper than shipping the phone out to replace the glass which will cost about $160 plus 2-3 weeks without your phone.

I didn't unroot. They clearly stated that my warranty didn't cover accidental damage anyway. I'm also not sure if they can tell your phone is rooted. They can tell if its unlocked if they take the time to boot up your phone. But ultimately thats why they do a factory reset on your phone because they can't test it any other way. Its not like you're going to keep your phone unlocked for them to peruse.
 
You will need to file an insurance claim with Asurion here: Asurion - Your Technology Protection Company as long as you purchased the insurance. You can look on your bill to see if there is a monthly charge for Asurion. I think it's about $6.99/mo. If you do have the insurance, it wouldn't matter if you accidentaly broke it, purposely broke it, or dunked it in your coffee and tried to take a bite out of it. They will ship you a new one. If not, your best bet is to google "replace glass or digitizer Samsung Galaxy Nexus" and research the companies that provide this service to find one that fits your needs. The only other option is to deal with it, which sucks for sure. Good luck to you!
