D4 gets ICS before Bionic?!???

Lol, at least it's not like the Samsung Fascinate 2 years ago, that was a nightmare waiting for Android 2.2, by then Motorola had long rolled out 2.3.

Just saying it's uncool to post a new thread with the title of "Droid4 ICS soak test" in the Bionic forum when the new and locked leak .238 just came out on Friday.
When I first saw this post I immediately thought about going ahead and flashing it but luckily I reread the post and went to the link and saw it was for the Droid 4 not the Bionic.

We have distracted driving, we even have distracted walking. This post proves there is now distracted foruming.

What part of Droid 4 ICS soak test did you not see in the title? What part of Droid 4 Soak Test Set To Begin... did you not see in the link?

I'm sorry if your shared frustration over the rollout of ICS for our Bionic caused you to misinterpret my post. I'll make sure to be more clear next time.

I have to agree it is a little frustrating to see this. One would have thought that considering the large number of ICS builds for testing made for the Bionic we would have had it by now.

IDK, I just expect to see posts about the Bionic, not the Droid 4 in the Bionic forum.
I'll just start posting a link here to every story I see about a phone that's not the Bionic getting a update I guess.

I'm just saying ICS is Android version 4 so when I saw Droid 4 ICS Soak Test in the Bionic forum 3 days after the latest leak .238 gets into the wild, I just assumed it was talking about a Android version 4 ICS soak test for the Bionic till I went to the actual posted link.

We're all frustrated due to the continued delay of ICS for our Bionics. I for one think it's ridiculous that the D4 got it before the Bionic. Go take a look at how many posts the D4 has on this forum...777. The Bionic has 33,000.

Hopefully, within a week or so, we'll have our update and we'll all be a bit more relaxed. Until we set our sights on Jelly Bean ;)

OK ... everybody take a deep breath ...

What the article said was that Motorola was inviting people to participate in the soak test that will probably be ICS.

When 5.9.905 about to come out I was invited to participate in the soak test and I then did participate.

The soak test started a little more than a month after I was invited.

The OTA was released to everyone one week after the soak test started.

You cannot accurately predict anything about when one of these releases will come out. All you can do is wait.

I think the OP's point was that a phone which was released much much later than the Bionic is getting it's upgrade ahead of the Bionic.

I think it does have a bad look to it as far as public relations go. If Motorola is having some sort of difficulty with the ICS for Bionic, then they need to be communicating with their customers.

Motorola and the Bionics ability to run ICS has nothing to do with it, this is all Verizon's decision.
Droid 4 is a newer phone and still being sold by Verizon (Bionic is no longer available in their online store) so why wouldn't it get ICS before the Bionic?
I would also suspect the Droid 4 will be the oldest phone that Verizon will eventually let be upgraded to JB for the same reason.
Though the Bionic is perfectly capable of running it, Verizon will be wanting owners of the older Bionic to upgrade and give up those unlimited data plans. Hope I'm wrong though. :)

I warned you about that logic stuff ...

Why do you think the Droid 4 will get ICS before the Bionic? You assume the elapsed time from first soak test invitation to OTA release is identical for two different devices. Nope. You assume the Droid 4 leak test is ICS ... yet to be pr oven.

Every soak test they do something different.

Then I guess Verizon really does think they have too many customers. Something tells me in about a year I will be helping them with that problem of theirs.

I could be wrong and we all get JB six or seven months down the road but that would be so unlike them, we can all keep our fingers crossed but.....

Just as long as the bionic gets official ICS in the 3rd qtr like Moto said...then I'm cool with it. I stopped worrying about what other phones are getting a while back. It just causes undue stress onto myself. :p But I understand what you are feeling Dab.

Well, it's not Jelly Bean. Honestly, I can't be upset if we don't get JB. But they used the fact that the Bionic would be upgraded, and they didn't say possibly, they said it would for a fact, to ICS was one of the selling points of the Bionic to me. So this attitude that the Bionic is like a throwaway model to them because it's older just sort of makes it seem like they only care about customers who have bought phones within the last 6 months. Likely Razr owners will get the same treatment before long.

Yes, we are getting ICS, which is good they are keeping their word, but one has to wonder if it's a half hearted attempt.

And what happens if you buy a phone full price from the maker and don't get it through the cell phone company? Do you get software updates through the manufacturer?

I think the OP's point was that a phone which was released much much later than the Bionic is getting it's upgrade ahead of the Bionic.

This is the way that it has always been with Android - the newer the phone from any OEM, the more likely it will get an Android update first.

The Droid 4 is the current Motorola high-level keyboard phone on Verizon; the Bionic is no longer the latest and greatest non-keyboard phone on Verizon, having been replaced for that by the Razr series. It makes sense that Moto and Verizon will want to take care of currently selling, top of the line phones, rather than legacy and second-tier phones. It will be easier to sell a lot of Droid 4 phones if they have ICS rather than answer the questions from customers about why it has "only Gingerbread" while an "old" phone like the Bionic has ICS.

Motorola (and the other Android OEMs) has only rarely communicated like that. First of all, the vast, vast, vast majority of Bionic owners probably do not care one bit about it, and communications like that are not important to them. Only a small percentage of Android owners join a forum like this and care all that much about getting updates ASAP. And I cannot recall a single instance of an Android OEM sending out an update to customers saying that there is a problem with an update - that just doesn't happen.

Also, it's quite probable that they are not having an issue with the ICS update for the Bionic.

Moto promised an early Q3 update for the Bionic, and we are getting close to the middle of Q3, so that seems to have slipped, but my guess is that they will provide updates to this schedule every quarter or so. (The last was on June 30.) And, of course, the JB release right after that update probably threw a bit of a wrench in the works.

Anyway, patience is a virtue...

Well VZW pushed out ICS for the HTC Rezound last week.... They are just lining them up one a time in reverse chronological order (LIFO). Hopefully this gives MOTO more time to debug our version.... They're not theat quick.

ICS is happening for the Bionic, the leaks from Motorola have been steady, the latest one build .238 Just last Friday.
