Best keyboard on Nexus

I have issues typing with two hands (two thumbs) with the Galaxy Nexus, it just does not fit in my hand right (slightly too small to use both thumbs, slightly too large to use one hand). The stock keyboard isn't really one finger friendly to me. I installed the swiftkey and it has been much easier and is getting easier. Holding the phone in one hand while the other hand types.

It can take a little bit to get used to swipe-typing, but after a solid week of using it you'll find it will be difficult going back to tap-tap-tapping. Your messaging speed will increase greatly.

Very true and you will also find that you try to "Swype" on almost any touch screen keyboard you encounter lol:D
 
I used Swype for almost a year on my old EVO 4G. It is nice but required too much thought about what word I was typing. Switched to Swiftkey and am now using SwiftKey 3 on my GNex. It practically knows what I am going to type before I type it. I'm way faster on Swiftkey than I ever was on Swype.

YMMV, keyboards are very personal.

With this in mind, is there a working version of Swype for Jelly Bean?

If not, I'm in no rush for VZW to roll out that update.

My one complaint is the language button which I frequently hit it accidentally when trying to hit the comma...
 
orange swype??? mine is and has always been blue (since my old Eris days til now)....what am I missing

oh my god, it's actually orange. I have no idea why/how I thought it was blue. This is freaking me out man.......I need more wine now

When I upgraded my phone to JB last weekend, I just restored swype from Ti BU.

It "so far" seems to be working fine. I was on the latest beta version before I upgraded.

(this is on the VZW GN, although it "shouldn't" make a difference.)
 
My Darling Bride has Swype on her SGS3 and I can't stand it. And she doesn't even use it. She opts to peck the keyboard.

I am 100% SOLD on Swiftkey 3 as THE keyboard for Android. Especially now that it uses Google Voice typing for input!

(The only thing I need to figure out is what magic word it wants to hear to start a new line instead of typing out "new line" or "enter" or "return"... any hints?)

No, Swiftkey 3 just gets better and better. I won't use anything else.

Stock keyboard is very good, in fact, the best stock keyboard of any device. However, Swiftkey 3 has the most increadible prediction capabilities I have ever encountered and on that bases I'd recommend Swiftkey.
 
Swiftkey if you like a "normal" keyboard, it has great prediction, and they fixed the incompatibility with the ICS and JB voice keyboard.

Swype is interesting. If you type long things, it can be great. I find it sort of annoying for just typing a couple of words.

The stock JB keyboard is a lot better than previous stockers, though. It wouldn't be terrible to stick with it. And the voice input is excellent.
 
I also used Swype religously for a long time on my old Android phone. But when I got the Galaxy Nexus I decided to see what else is out there. Given that Swype is amazing I only tried swype style keyboards since going back to tap typing felt like using a hammer and chisel.

I found touchpal to be very good. And the fact that it was free was a bonus.

The one I chose eventually (which to this day is still the only paid app on my phone) is SlideIT. This is as good as Swype with just a few minor improvements (i.e. the ease of adding and deleting to and from the user dictionary). The advantage this had over touchpal was that it had a lot of the punctuation keys in similar locations to swype and therefore something I was more familiar with.
 
swype is my standard... best swyping keyboard. but I dont like typing on it. I prefer stock or GO for regular typing.
 
gah! Why is my swiftkey not working right then? I have the latest version and the nexus with jelly bean. When I'm in any browser there is no word prediction or correction at all. It's frustrating. Should I uninstall and reinstall it?

Web browsers don't work for me. It's more for regular typing. Try typing in Google search

There's no prediction in google search either. And if I want to type on forums (in a browser since all of them don't have tapatalk), I'd really like prediction or at least correction. I get neither.

eta: with the stock keyboard there's no prediction in google search either. But there is in browsers. Maybe I'll switch. I really don't like the look and feel of the stock one though, and I don't see any options to customize it.

eta: I reinstalled swiftkey and it seems like it's working on the browser now. hooray! Not on google search though, but even the stock keyboard didn't predict on that. Hopefully it will keep working for me.

So now I have SwiftKey 3,which is good, but I feel Swype was faster.

The latest version of Swype is meant to work on jellybean I believe though.
 
I love the how well the prediction works on Swift key 3, but now that I've got used to it I prefer Swype. But swift key is supposed to be coming out with their own Swype-like keyboard, and I'll definitely be trying that out.

Edit: having given Swiftkey flow a try, I found it didn't read my gestures as well as Swype, and often made some ridiculous suggestions. I'm going to give the 15 day trial of SlideIT a try though after revisiting this topic and seeing it suggested.

Dont see how JB screwed it up. I'm on JB and I think the newest Swype Beta is the best swype has ever been and I've been a fan since day one. I actually uninstalled my main swype to run the beta. Plus the new beta has themes which is jsust icing on the cake.
 
It was just initially not compatible. Just like I found out my Swype from 4.1.1 when restored to a ROM running 4.1.2 doesn't work right.
 
I tried them all, paid and unpaid. I prefer Swype. I can type almost as fast as I can speak. A bit getting used to but well worth the investment. It's always a preference when it comes to keyboards.
Also note that Swiftkey will be releasing a new product called SwiftKey Flow which will combine Swype type keyboard plus their great word prediction. Probably first quarter.

After reading this yesterday (I know its old but I was looking to try a new keyboard) I downloaded the 15 day trial of SlideIT and so far I really like it.

Its almost (if not as) good at reading my gestures as Swype, has an option for arrow keys and themes like Swiftkey and the predictions are pretty good (maybe not quite Swiftkey level but close enough). It's basically all the things I like about Swype and Swiftkey in one keyboard, with some extras thrown in. I'll probably end up buying it, but I'm going to make use of the trial period to be absolutely sure.

As far as the others I've tried (all on the GNex).
Stock keyboard: got a lot better in 4.2.2 with gesture typing, but there's no option to long press for numbers or common symbols, you have to switch layers. I found it read my gestures better than Swiftkey flow but not as good as Swype, or SlideIT.

Swype: the best at reading my swipes (may vary by person), I got pretty fast with it. Only things I didn't like were there's no period button when you switch to the numbers layer, and I didn't like the orange trail color (not a huge deal but I prefer the blue).

Swiftkey 3: this was my favorite tap type keyboard, and still is. I gave flow a try through the testing phases but it just wasn't reading my gestures as accurately as Swype (or stock or SlideIT). I liked the arrow keys, being able to choose themes, and the number layer was better than Swype, but I'm too used to gesture typing now and it doesn't stack up there.

I'll probably switch back to the stock keyboard on my Nexus 7 to save space though (I got the 8GB so every little bit counts).
