Root connecting to linux cpu

Hello all, been searching my but off trying find answers to this so hopefully this post will put up some answers. I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 with winXP installed through Virtualbox. I can connect the phone through USB but my cpu wont recognize the phone in downloading mode hence I can't root it. My linux OS has to at least be able to mount the device before winXP will see it or be able to use it so wondering if anyone else has had this problem or not. My prevail has the recent FF19 update unfortunately and would very much like to root it to FE16. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is Virtualbox capturing the USB connection (tool on lower right of Virtualbox on the version I use)?

Can you get

./adb devices

To tell you anything?

In any case, I moved your post up here to the root forum where you can get the best advice.

Welcome to the forums! :)

might just have to use a friends pc or something like that to get it to work. don't have any other answer to that.

I remember when I first did it I had weird issues. Is your windows detecting it at all? I had to install the drivers then connect phone let it do its install thing then turn on debugging and let it do more installing then it would be detected in dl mode. Because the debugging mode is what installed the adb drivers which I think had to be installed for my machine to detect it in dl mode.

Yeah winXP sees it in Vbox at the bottom right but my linux OS doesn't see anything so winXP can't connect to it. I know I usually have to mount what I want to use in linux before I can use it through Vbox so did a factory reset on the phone so i'll try it again but if all else fails, I have Win7 installed as a stand alone OS on a diff drive so I do at least have options. I was looking into bitpim throught the ubuntu repos but haven't found any info on other people going that route so. Thank you for the help, I will keep at it until I get there.

Did you put phone in debugging mode? Like I said I had to let it install in regular then debugging mode to work. Not that phone has to be in debug mode but I think it needs the adb drivers that get installed when you put phone in debugging mode.

Edit: hook up in non debugging mode first make sure drivers install then change to debugging mode let drivers install again then go to dl mode and try it. Hopefully that is a little clearer and good luck.

Not at pc right now but if I recall there should be an adb device in device manager if adb drivers are installed correctly.

its in or out? you need to uncheck it. and doesn't matter for dl mode anyways.

But doesn't dl mode use the adb drivers that get installed when you put phone in debugging? That way it can communicate through adb during boot and in recovery/dl mode?

Go to device manager in xp vm and see if you see anything adb there. Or just start over by taking phone out of debug mode and making sure you can connect to it. Then check the box for debug mode and see if it prompts any new hardware. May have to unplug phone and plug it back in.

not sure about that?
but never have to mess with debugging when doing dl mode only when connecting to pc to transfer stuff.

Pretty sure it uses adb mode for recovery and dl mode. Thats why you need the adb drivers for odin to work. Well check when I get home.

I have a stand alone HDD with win7 on it that I could use. I would like to use the FE16 rooted image for this but not sure it will mess up the phone since it's only 2 months old and it has the most recent FF19 installed even after a factory reset.

OK one more thing to try would be to reboot in dl mode and connect to pc then go into device manager and search for new devices. When mine is in dl mode it shows up in device manager under modems as Samsung mobile modem. Usually has a number after it but it changes from time to time.

EDIT: When you put phone in dl mode do you see phone in device manager?

No, mass storage only works when it's on. Otherwise no connection is established.

That is weird. I had opposite problem to begin with PDANet and/or mass storage only worked with debugging off until i got adb drivers installed. I would try to install them again. But this time I would totally uninstall samsung drivers then reinstall without phone connected. Hook phone up but make sure debugging check box is unchecked and see if you can get mass storage to work then I would unhook phone check debugging checkbox and hook phone back up to get the rest of the drivers installed. or if that doesnt work try installing PDANet.

Plus if linux doesn't see it then Vbox wont either so I think i'm just gonna try plugging in my Win7 HDD and try it on a stand alone win OS

Shouldn't mess phone up as FE16 and FF19 are both just versions of the software meant to run on your phone.
