Root connecting to linux cpu

No, I had to install them in winXP but as soon as I turned debugging on then linux could see it as a mass storage device. As soon as I turn it off then linux cuts the connection completely

Not sure i would reboot into ubuntu but i dont have vbox set up yet and cant find my xp iso so i would have to redownload all that and it would take forever. But I am sure you have to be able to do it somehow.

EDIT: I found xp iso if you would like me to try and do it that way? I need to set that up anyway.

Yeah it would be easy if I could root the phone in USB mode but haven't found a way to do that. I'll just try it from a stand alone win7 OS and see where that takes me for now since I don't have much time left to mess with it until I have to go work. I do want to find out if it's possible through linux/Vbox though, just have to get linux to see it somehow.

Define not much time left. I have to set this up anyway. So if you want I can just leave instructions here when I get it figured out. Since you can always root after work if you have to.

LOL, I have until about1 or 2 in the morning, just don't want to be doing this last min since I need my phone while i'm out that's all.

It's almost 6 pm, btw I really appreciate your time and effort in this. I'm new to this forum but have been a member of the Kubuntu forums for a while and your being just as kind in your help so thank you, I will be a long time member/contributor for sure :) Also so you have my info, i'm running Kubuntu 10.10 KDE 4.5 with winXP on Vbox so you know what i'm working with. I also factory reset my phone so i'm starting fresh.

Same here I am new to this forum. But you will find that it is a great community. I have belonged to several tech forums and this is by far the best and most friendly community of all of them. And a little background on me I am great with computers but mostly proficient on windows environment. So linux is a stretch for me. I have never had the chance to play in it much but I am using ubuntu 12.04 and learning it as I go.

Ah, I moved to linux about 3 years ago and never looked back lol. I'm proficient in windows up to the beginning of win8 so i'm still in the loop and have a backup drive with win7 on it but would like to find out how to do this through linux since that's what the phone has. I would think there would be more in the linux community on this but I guess it's still pretty new so maybe together we can change the course as it were. I know a lot of other people have been trying to do the same thing so maybe we can help with that.

I tried moving to linux but too much I did just revolved around MS so I was stuck. I am downloading vbox for ubuntu now. That way I can get this going. Unfortunately it will take about 30minutes as my phone is my only internet atm, BTW did you try installing PDANet on the xp vm to see if that did anything?

Lol, no prob. I of all people understand your predicament so no worries. I haven't tried PDAnet but will now and see if that does anything.

Been looking into that but not sure just yet. Can't afford to not have my phone during the week so just trying to do my homework first.

I was thinking pdanet because of the way it installs the modem side of the phone since it is tethering software. Anyway gonna set up xp vm now and see what I can do.

Ok that failed. Maybe you should dust off that win 7 drive. I don't have my main rig here so working off a netbook with 8gb ssd with xp and booting ubuntu off a 4gb flash drive and it tried to format an imaginary 10gb ntfs drive. If I can point it to my 2tb external I will be fine. Will try again in a minute.

No prob, i'll just fire up the win7 drive for now and try that but don't give up the ghost, i'll still try for a linux solution to this.

Well I am sure if we can find a solution it will be useful in the future to us and others. Since rooting is just the beginning.

OK this time it is working much better setting up virtual 25GB ntfs drive but got it pointed at my 2TB external so there is room instead of trying to format air which locked up my pc last time. Hopefully I have good news here shortly.

I find it weird that I am using a netbook natively running windows xp to boot to a live ubuntu environment to run a windows xp virtual machine.

Guess just pressing the power button is overrated.

Ok so I fired up the win7 drive and got it rooted to FE16 in one shot following the instructions posted on the this site so got it done but I do want to figure out how to get linux to see the phone in downloading mode so I will keep at that. Once linux sees the phone on a comm port then the Vbox install can access it, thus being able to root through Vbox so gonna keep trying:)

Glad you got it rooted. I am still working on it myself. Actually the ISO I was using to install xp on VM did not have custom sif so I am still installing it since I walked away thinking it had automated script but I guess it didn't since I came back and still not installed waiting on me. All the Windows OS disks I create do all the work you stick it in tell it where to install and walk away guess I got to used to that.

And I did see where once I put phone in debugging mode I seen the mass storage without drivers in Ubuntu but not in debugging nothing but I don't even have vm set up yet so can't say what I will find with that,
