Help Missed calls VS. Voice Mail notification???

SipDude

If I recieve a call and am not near my phone, how will I know I have a missed call vs. a vocice mail? This weekend I saw I had a dozen or so missed calls but didn't see a voice mail indicator etc, so I didn't bother to check for voice mail. My non-smart phone with Metro had a voice mail indicator and # under it stating how many voice mails I had. Does the Motion NOT have this feature??

I didn't know I had a voice mail until I checked it just now. I had 6 voice mails!!! But nothing to indicate I had one AT ALL... Grrr...

Do these missed calls and voice mails show up in notifications diffently or just as a missed call? I don't answer every call I get due to telemarketers etc. Does this mean I have to constantly check my voice mail??? If this is the case I will be going back to Metro and saying this is totally unacceptable considering my $20 samsung with you guys could do this!

Help anyone??!! Is there a setting on this phone? An app?

Your phone is defective....
ways to fix this:
reboot
if that doesn't work, reflash firmware from my guide in the All Things Root subforum
if that doesn't work, cry to corporate.....it may be a defect on all phones if my guide doesn't fix it.

Rebooting does nothing but reboot the phone. Unless you have an LG Motion and tell me what I "SHOULD" be seeing... Well anyways there will be no flashing or reflashing of any fimware on this phone. (2 Days old.)

I've been around the block and know a bogus response when I see one.

Does anyone else have a legit response that does have actual hands on working experience with this phone?

TIA

Reboots fix more issues than you would think...
I know more than you would think. I unbricked optimus M's, optimus V's, optimus S's, Optimus M+'s.....I made unbrick guides for 2 phones that I don't own aand soon a 3rd one for the connect.
Just try a reboot. If that doesn't fix it, we know it is most likely a defect in the software.

Ummmm... Sammyz has been here since '11

Has over 2000 posts. ~25% involving a thanks. I wouldn't shun him too fast.

The firmware reflash is a troubleshooting step. If it fixes it, it was software. If not it may be a DEFECTIVE PHONE. (or simply not a feature of this device, but that's doubtful)

It appears you may not have been quite as far around said block as you might think ;)

The phone will create notifications for missed calls as well new voicemail. Any android phone does it. It doesn't matter if a person has the phone or not. They all work basically the same way (except some have a notification light and others dont).

Now, if your phone didn't know about the call it can't tell you it missed it. And it won't know a voicemail has come in until it can receive reception again.

So you have basically two potential situations. Either you didn't have reception the whole time. Or your phone has a problem. If you aren't willing to do anything about the second, pray it is only the first.

I misread your profile *embarrassed* but I've seen you around. I know you're not bs

I've only seen you around before in forum games lol, thanks for sticking up for me.
Some people just don't know what a good, straight to the point, answer is when they see one.

I read forums for many devices, even if i don't own them, never know what obscure knowledge you may come across ;) (even if I didn't, a simple view of threads you have created gives some insight. Anyone could have seen that with a little research)

Reboots fix more issues than you would think...
It seems to depend on background how well people take that concept.

Anyone who has used older Windows-based systems knows how much a reboot can fix things. :D People who jumped over to Linux to avoid that pattern then get into the thinking that a system can run long-term without ever rebooting and forget how much a reboot can fix things.

Same with cellphones. I remember on my Touch Pro (Windows Mobile) I couldn't go a week before glitches (granted, it was running custom roms) would start appearing and the phone would simply forget it was a phone and calls and text messages wouldn't come through. On Android it seems more rare and it is mostly app glitches that cause people to reboot, so people forget how much a reboot can fix things.

But in essence, these are glorified computers with an antenna. They have the same problems a computer system has. Reboot is a commonly acceptable means of fixing problems on a computer, but on a cell phone people seem to get upset. Personally, when I saw the problem I thought back to the Touch Pro, and my first thought was similar. Reboot. :D

Well after doing some additional digging around there should be the standard cassette type of icon up in the notification bar when you have voice mail. It looks like the profile of an old 110 Kodak cartridge. Yes I have been around THAT long. :-)

And Sammy I give you kudos for rooting phones you have never owned but you have to understand that I'm not about to flash any firmware on a phone that otherwise works fine except the voice mail indication that is 48 hours old.

As to other's comments... I understand the phone does not have to be in range to recieve a voice mail or even on for that matter. The icon should appear when the phone queries the Metro site and dumps the info to the phone. I find it odd that it does not do this. And yes, I have rebooted, and also completely shut the phone down. Oh it does show as 1.5G for a proc. So I have to think I have a good and recent build.

It will make for an interesting conversation with the folks at Metro tomorrow. it'll go something like, "Hi, How do I know I have a voice mail?" "Can you try that out and call me and show me?" Let them scratch their heads and either give me another Motion or my money back.

On a side note, I own two rooted tablets and have been building servers since um... back in the day of 10 based 2. That's prior to Al Gore taking credit for the Internet, dial-up, and even cell phones. When they were actully called "Brick Phones".

I'm just tired of messing with this stuff and wanted a clean phone that worked as it was intended out of the box for a change. Too much to ask for?

Now does anyone here have a Motion that "Does" show that icon when you have a voice mail?

Yes. The phone will definitely show a notification and tell you how many you have waiting.

If you have Visual Voicemail it'll override the previous notification and produce its own once downloaded. The icon is different but it tells the same information.

I don't find ways to root phones, I just fix them :p or unbrick them.

My mom had this same problem with her optimus m. I'm telling you it is a software defect if a reboot doesn't fix it.

Well I finally got to get down to my local metro store where I bought the phone on Friday. The girls were surprised to see me.

The conversation went exactly as I had planned with the exception of the little vmail indicator showing up just as I walked into the store. I checked and sure enough I had vmail. Just then the manager walked in and went the extra mile and said lets test it out anyways.

Well, we just could NOT get that little vmail indicator to show up AT ALL. They reset, flashed, and did everything they could. Then they called the main metro number and they tried from their end.

This was their official response after trying a few things:

There is nothing wrong with our service as you are recieving your voice mail when you check it. It must be a bad phone which the customer can go to a corporate store and get a refurbished unit. (Which they have none of - by the way.)

The girls were just as shocked as I as the phone was less than a week old. At that point the manager had to leave but the other two girls did everything they could to get it to work.

Eventually they decided to try the visual voice-to-text option which costs me a buck a month. We tested it and at first it didn't work. I was getting a little steamed but then I got a ton of texts and they all came through at once. (But still - No little icon in the task bar.)

Well at least I get the texts pretty instantly. I've tried it a couple of times since. The girls told me if I wasn't happy they could take that service back off.

Overall, I'm not blaming Metro but LG for not offereing a better solution to their partners on defective products. The girls really gave it their all. I plan on drafting a nice letter to the folks at LG discussing my displeasure.

I for one WILL NOT be buying another LG product if this is how they like to do business. My high efficiency washer and dryer are LG along with a bunch of other things in my house. I'd hate to see what would happen if I needed support on anything like that.

This will be the last LG anything I buy for a while as you can see the bad taste it has put in my mouth.

Anyone have any contact for LG? I'd like to have a pleasant conversation with them.

Errr...

I'm confused. If Metro was the one who said they wouldn't replace it with a new phone, why are you giving Metro a pass and getting upset at LG?

How much talk time has your phone logged?

Metro explained it this way. The Metro-PCS service which is a phone service works as designed. I can call in, enter my password, and retrieve my voice mail. That all works. The fact that the phone does NOT display the little voice mail icon indicator is a LG phone problem. My voice mail is set up correctly. It is the phone that does not work as intended. The fact that Metro sold me the phone is moot since I have logged over an hour of talk time. I've been on it a total of 11 hours. I know, I know. Bullcrap right?

LG will only replace it with a refurbished unit through Metro PCS. Which they have NONE of at the moment. The Metro store was out of them too. (new ones) not that they were going to give me one anyways.

I guess it's like the grill I bought a few years back. It said if I had issues not to go back to the store but to contact Charbroil the manufacturer themselves.

I've done more testing and I can't even get the voice to text to work now at all. Yet when I call my voicemail, there they all are. BS if you ask me.

Thoughts - Comments anyone?

Very possible, especially if you happen to have a deadzone problem. Update the PRL then reboot, then test it if its possible.
