Now I know I'm probably asking this in the wrong area and everyone will get mad, but I just need to know one thing.

First off, I've got a Mytouch and I'm wondering what does rooting an android phone mean? What does it do?

Rooting is having the rights to all the files in the root folder .. that means that anyfile can be accesed, deleted, edited, added... And therefor the phone can be set to do things that a OS-non-Rooted user can not do ... And Apps can make use of features that non-rooted can not

So I can like delete the preloaded programs that I don't want? Does it make anything not work like with Tmobile, is there any kind of problems that can form there?

And are there different kinds of rooting? How does it work?

you can potentially delete preloaded apps.. but i would'nt recommend it ...

But you can uninstall any app that appears in your apps manager and that doesn't require rooting ... The Core default apps are protected and would be reinstalled if a Factory Reset was done.

There is Rooting ... that is one thing which gived you the rights of the special user='root' ... After those priviledges are established ... depending on the specific platform many OS Build have been made to tweak the OS and bring various UI looks to the phone so a G1 could look much like a Hero from the UI...

It sounds like you don't need to worry about rooting.

The analgous term you hear with iPhones is "jail breaking" and that is typically done to get around Apple's draconian control over what content you can have on an iPhone.

Unless you have a specific need to analyze the phone, I wouldn't recommend rooting. Such needs include putting a custom rom from XDA Dev on your phone... but remember you can brick your phone doing that.

You can take a look at some of the theme apps ... aHome, Open Home, dxTop

these can take away some of the stock vanilla look

I just replaced my stock MicroSD card which is class 2 with a PNY MicroSD class 4 card. Makes a big different in FreshFaces, the web browser and some other apps that keep state and other info on the SD card.

I have order a class 6 MicroSD card which I should help further

Just an fyi for ahome, etc will benefit from a faster SD card.

Does rooting your phone void your warranty?

I have it from a TMO person that TMO really could care less if you root ...
I know people have posted here that they have bricked their phones and still had them replaced ...

The TOS might state differently but rooting alone is not a reason to void warranty ... When I got my phone Oct 21, 2008 I had access to root straight from the factory ... and that would not void the replacement of the phone for the first year ...

If your screen or keyboard or whatever fails ... that is not anything to do with software ... and would be coverable under the warranty ....

If you have problems with warranty call the BBB and file a complaint against TMO and you will see you get a favorable response from TMO fixing the issue ...
