Root Root & Flash ROM - Double check I undertsand

HarpNinja

Newbie
Hi! I am getting a used EVO today to replace the Epic 4g I broke. I have no experience modding my phones, but have read a lot about rooting this weekend.

I really would like to maximize battery life and use my phone as a hot spot for my iPad2. My understanding is I can root, then flash mikg like they do in these vids.

Root...

Then flash mikg...

This will give me the option to open or download appropriate apps, etc. Correct? The phone's camera is evidently not working, so I might take it to Sprint first to see if they can fix it, then try rooting and flashing.

I've had Sprint forever, but am very frustrated with my reception and constant roaming (which kills my battery). I am fortunate my friend sent me this phone to use as I really don't want to re-up with Sprint!

Thanks!

I would steer you away from following a YouTube video because The method you need to use to root is going to depend on what the phones hboot is.

Also, don't accept any OTAs when you get the phone, and hopefully your friend won't do it before he gives it to you.

It's going to make rooting harder

Hello there!
About your camera, perhaps yes, get that fixed first then come back and we will be more than happy to guide you.
Another thing about your camera...what is the issue?
Sometimes a hard press with your thumb on the camera lens will pop it back into place...you may hear a slight click if it goes back into place:)
Depending on what the issue is of course.!

I emailed to find out more about the camera issue. Should get the phone tonight and will try pressing on it for sure, thanks!

I am not sure what OTA or hroot means. I am totally green to this and checked YouTube as it is very concrete and easy for me to understand, lol. Thanks for the advice and quick reply.

I just noted you're in MN...me too.

YouTube videos can be used to supplement (not replace) the step by step tutorial listed in this forum. This forum's steps are fool proof if you read and follow directions. Good luck!

you most likely will need this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html to root. i never used videos to follow when rooting. up to you though. key thing though is to read, read, and then read some more before attempting to root. also you can get answers here if you need it.

I was so scared, I used 3 written tutorials and a YT video for the old method (Unrevoked). :D The video by itself was not enough but it filled in the gaps in some of the written tutorials.

Problem is I haven't seen any current YT videos since so I don't know if they are helpful at all. And now, you guys have organized everything for the written tutorials for rooting, so it's a lot (A LOT!) better than last year or before.

Thanks, guys!

Here is a comment on the camera issue:

"The camera comes on but the colors are WAY off. The "front" camera (facing the user) works just fine, right colors and everything. I don't know what caused it, I was suspecting software, but our service contract had expire so I didn't bother trying to get it fixed, especially since my wife was already set to upgrade her plan."

Definitely try Mikestony's suggestion when you get the phone. It's a well known issue with the EVO 4G camera.

Got the phone...fixed the camera...now on to rooting.

I am following the Rooting Gingerbread link. I am on a Mac. I am doing the HTCdev method. I am stuck on the HTCdev site where it asks me to:

"To find these files:

a.
Run the “SDK Manager.exe” which is found in \android-sdk-windows\"

I created an Android folder and put the three downloads in it. The phone is connected, but not recognized by my computer. I cannot find the info above and cannot "right click while holding shift".

Any help? Thanks!

Yes. I can't figure out how to copy a block without "info" on every line on this Mac at work. I have a PC at home, but not Internet until Saturday due to my provider having an issue (Charter).

Just need to find the ROM on my SD now...not sure how that works on a Mac. I put mikg in the sdk-tools folder. Was that the right thing to do?

After unlocking your bootloader, did you install a recovery yet.?
Have to do that before a rom flash.

Edit: in answer to your question, no.

Yes...I backed up, wiped, etc...all the stuff listed in the guide. I am just not certain of how to get MikG on my sd card to unzip on my phone via Mac.

o.k...first do not unzip it....
download rom to computer, transfer to phone.
When you plug your phone into computer, mount as disc drive, the contents shown on computer are your sd contents, not your actual phone files.
Drag the rom, unzipped, to your sd card. unmount phone, unplug phone.
Voila! rom on sd card.:D

Downloaded it to my download folder, tried to flash it twice, and both times it says it is "bad".
