Root Complete Newbie's Guide to rooting and flashing Evo V 4G ROMs/Kernels using fastboot

I followed these directions EXACTLY, but Root Checker tells me my phone isn't rooted. Did I basically just waste an hour doing a factory reset?

What the heck? So I did all this and now I have to do it again because something was left out?

There are so many comments on this forum such as "if you can make a PB&J, you can root your phone".

I follow EVERY direction listed, and I get nothing but a wasted hour.

Not wasted, you either install a rom or the Superuser.zip as soon as you get the recovery and backup made.

It's not like you have to start over, it's pretty much the last step.

Could someone please quote the original instructions and add it in so I
now exactly what to do?

Also do I need to do it with the superuser.zip first so I'm rooted and then redo it with a rom, or can I got straight in with a rom?

When you get to step 7 you can just install superuser or install a rom. Either one accomplishes the same thing as all roms come with superuser.

I could have sworn it used to have something about superuser,zip in the first post, it seems gone now and instead it just has you flash JMZ's stock rom which accomplishes the same thing.


If you just want to flash superuser and remain stock, here is Superuser.zip
http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip

Personally, I would recommend just finding a rom you like and flash that.

I planned on a new rom (one where 4g still works, as I get great 4g signal in Orlando) but didn't know if I could do it while the phone wasn't rooted.
 
I'm having a problem. I'm to the part where I have to flash the stock rom odex, but when I do get this erro message:

Added /sdcard/Roms/JmzStock_VM_Shooter_Odex.zip
No md5 file found, ignoring
Install /sdcard/Roms/JmzStock_VM_Shooter_Odex.zip
Zip...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E:Can't open /tmp/sideload/package.zip (bad)

Install from sdcard complete.

I never got a reboot either but I'm thinking that is because sideload couldn't be opened.

This tutorial provides root and the ability to flash custom ROMs if you so desire (as it installs a custom recovery where you can flash custom firmware from).
 
woot the tut rocks... for the record S-off had 1.57 hboot used the wire trick and controlbear took a few tries but worked flawlessly once it did.
 
Not able to Unlock Bootloader
Ive picked Evo View 4G (Sprint) and All other supported Mobiles, but get the same error

Error Code: Invalid Bootloader Token Length.
Error Reason: The submitted Token appears to be the wrong length and won't work.

Do I need to gripe at HTC about this?

BTW, it the identifier token time-based? I have run the command a few times and get a different set each time
 
I need help! after I type adb reboot bootloader it keeps telling me device not found.
I already installed the drivers with htc sync and I tried another computer and still get the same error -_- this is driving me nuts

Plus my stupid evo keeps getting that radio shortage error thing.

OS? did you try retarting the machine with the phone unplugged, then plugging it in? does the bootloader say FASTBOOT USB when you plug the phone in while it is in FASTBOOT mode? do you get a serial number response if you type in fastboot devices? if you're in Android and you have debugging enabled, does adb devices return anything?
 
metal thanks for the super fast response. i figured it out oops stupid mistake on my part. can't believe I spent so much time haha dang.
I kept on restarting the phone and holding PWR+DOWN Vol and then entering that command. ooops!

it must be a case of not copying exactly the right information over. that's the only case where you'd get that error to my knowledge. you have to be very very careful to paste exactly what they say with not even an extra space before or afterwards.

Yeah I figured out what I was doing wrong. I was not copying the Identifier Token Start and End lines.

Phone is rooted. Thanks jerofld
No ROMs or Kernels yet. Might look into rolling my own kernel and drivers so I can get the functions I need.

Id like to change the VM boot splash to something else, but all I can find require S-OFF, which is not justified risk, just for boot spash, imo

In \system\customize\resource delete:
hTC_bootanimation.zip
BoltAnimations.mp3
That will kill the animation and (pathetic) noise.

As for roms, while none actually require S-off if you use 4EXT and flash in two parts, Harmonia works without flashing the second half.

I moved those files off (andFTP to ftp server in case I needed them later)
The .mp3 killed the sound right away
hTC_bootanimation.zip did not kill VM boot animation, on my phone it was SPC_bootanimation.zip that got rid of it, and showed an ANDROiD boot logo

I put hTC_bootanimation.zip back on and rebooted again, same ANDROiD logo. Not sure what hTC_bootanimation.zip does on my phone
This solved this annoyance. Thanks

HTC and SPC just depend on the phone model. It;s the same file and format either way, just a different name.
