Hi,
You need to flash ClockworkMod recovery using 'fastboot' commands from PC.
1. Put the CWM .img file in sdk directory. (ex. C:\android).
2. Go to hboot menu on the phone and select 'fastboot'.
3. Type this from cmd on PC:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

Hopefully this will flash the CWM on you device.

To root your device:

Copy root.zip on sdcard, goto hboot select 'Recovery'.
On the menu, select 'Install Zip from Sdcard' and select the 'root.zip' and flash it.
Now the device will be rooted.

Hope this may be useful......

hi i am a noob to root and you have mentioned not to try this as a first project...but i want to root no matter what. could you please give me the important steps that are crucial where a beginner should not go wrong so as to avoid any kind of failure during the said process. also is it ok if the phone is with the sd card and sim on during the entire procedure.

thank you :)

It does day not to try if you're a total noob but if you read the instructions very carefully and watch a couple of youtube videos, you shouldn't have any problems. That's what I did and it worked perfectly

Hello

I couldn't find a straight answer to this in this thread. I'm trying to root my HTC Wildfire S, following the Guide provided. I am trying to unlock the bootloader, but my ROM is 2.26.61.1, and the tool that HTC provide wants me to upgrade to an earlier version! How do I return to an older ROM? WIll a factory reset do the trick?

Thanks

No since you have the most recent update, you can skip that part. It should work

But when the phone is in HBOOT it claims to be locked.
That means you still haven't unlocked the bootloader

I'm thinking there's an error somewhere. Either in the location path or the name of the file. Make sure everything is typed correctly

Looking at the instructions i is typed correctly, is my img file in the correct location? i have it in android- platform tools.

if so once im in fastboot USB, WHAT EXACTLY do i need to type in CMD

thanks for taking the time to help

Hi Joemoore22,

As I see your attach file image, you put the recovery image somewhere and executed the command on somewhere. put all in the one folder and proceed.

Just create a folder on "C:\android " and copy ONLY adb.exe, AdbWinApi.dll and fastboot.exe along with your <clockworkmod.img> file.

Now type the same fastboot command from "C:\android" as I explained earlier......
and this will definitely flash the recovery on the device!!.

I was able to get to the point where I needed to go from the HBOOT (or some letters like that) then click recovery. Now all I have is a white screen that says HTC. How long should I wait before trying something different? I'm starting to worry about the phone being messed up.

Hi GMR0210,
Welcome to AF...

Can you say which step you proceed on the guide....?

I think you need to flash ClockworkMod recovery according to you model (marvel/Marvelc).

I put the root thing on the sd card (4B)
then I put the sd card back in my phne turne it on while holding volume down and then pushing power. The hit recovery and it is still on the white screen. I evn tried it without the sd card and it didnt do anythikng witin the first five mis so I put it back in and it is still the same white screen with htc.

C:\Android>fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.8-marvel.htm
sending 'recovery' (4494 KB)...
OKAY [ 1.747s]
writing 'recovery'...
OKAY [ 2.198s]
finished. total time: 3.945s

this is what came up when I put the information in the black box.

if anyone has any ideas i would be greatful, maybe i have a file missing somewhere?

Really appreciate the quick reply. I'd tried out this link from your previous thread, but I'm still not able to extract the file using WinZip. Apologies for being such a newbie, but is there another way to extract the file?

If you download from this above link, you will get the recovery .img file.
You don't need to extract it.
Just flash using fastboot commands as in the guide.
