Root [CDMA] Flash or not to flash

devov

Member
I bought an Evo V from VM but their coverage area is horrible so I decided to have it flashed over to Verizon Pre-Pay. My flashing expert says converting the VM ROM to a SPRINT EVO 3D ROM would be easier to flash so I rooted and s-off'ed the EVO V and put the stock 3D rom on it. He flashed it to Verizon and all is great, I just can't stand the stock 3D rom. So, I was wondering if anyone knows for "sure" if I flash a custom rom to it will the custom rom "undo" the flash to Verizon???? Need help A>S>A>P

To quote Scotty85, the HTC master, as he answered your question here:
i think maybe you mean sprint,as the evo3d(or any evo) was not used on verizon.

but,you may or may not have issues if you flash roms or run ruus. typically the phone will be still "flashed" to virgin in that voice and text will work, but after running a rom or ruu you will have to re-enter APNs for data, and do some other things to make mms work.

As far as I know you can find the apn data online. Just search for verizon apn's. Then just make sure you are familiar with how to change them before you flash your new rom... And make a nandroid backup before you try it so that you can restore to a working state if things don't work out for you...

Also you have already asked this question in two other people's threads and now made your own thread asking the question. Now that you have your own thread for this question maybe we can keep it in here...

Yeah, I apologize if I've offended anyone. I just didn't understand Scotty85's answer. I appreciate both of your responses very much. If the "nandroid backup" will save the Verizon flash from getting screwed up in an attempt to flash a custom rom I will definitely try it. I know I seem desperate with all my posts but I can't afford to pay for another Verizon Flash right now. I think I need to learn how to do that stuff too. Anyway, thanks again for your input and knowing that I am "completely new" to this stuff please be patient with me and let me know if there is anything else you think of that may help me out with this endeavor.

It's all good. No offense taken. I just figured since you have your own thread now we can keep your question here as to not take others' threads in a different direction.

Let me verify first about nandroid saving your flash. I have never flashed to another carrier and wouldn't want you to lose everything. But as far as I know the nandroid backs up the entire state of your phone so I would assume that it would be safe...

Let's wait for scotty85 to chime in because he knows a lot about htc phones and can probably verify whether or not your nandroid will will do what you want it to!

That sounds good. I'll be checking in-and-out during the day but here all night. The flash to Verizon is great by the way. Not expensive and unlimited data, really unlimited :D:D:D:D

sorry,i meant to reply on your other thread, but its been a busy couple days for me. :o

the rom flash will not affect your verizon flash,it does not change those settings. calls and sms should still work fine after the flash,we will just need to figure out how to restore your APN settings,as ICS does not allow the install of APNs by 3rd party apps(wich would make it easy ). restoring APNs should make data and mms work on the new rom.

making a backup shoud preserve the current apn settings, and restoring it if you cant make it work on a different rom should make everything functional again.

you can use something like this app to backup your current APN settings.

if nothing else,we can read that file and know what your current, working APN settings are.

on the new rom,APNs will possibly be able to be manually entered in settings/mobile networks/access point names.

its hardly ever an issue entering new APNs on a gsm device,i guess since its common place for gsm phones to move around to different carriers, but cdma phones are funny. really well just have to give it a try and see :)

Hi, thanks for the reply. Should I look up the Current APN now or just get the app and hope for the best? I'll go ahead if you are 100% sure I won' t lose Verizon.

OK, I got the app and backed up the APN. I'll wait on your word "go" before I flash the MEAN ROM.:D

yup! you should be good to go. the rom flash should not affect any of the settings that are letting it work with vzw :)

HAH! It worked! So far so good. I'm going to restore apps with Titanium. I did notice with the overclocking app that the max speed is the same as stock. Isn't the newest version OC capable? Its real late so I'm going to crash and mess with it in the morning. I'll let you know how its doing then.:D:D:D:D:D

By the way " THANK YOU " !!!!!!

Nice! I'm glad it's working out for you!

Both of you were a great help and I'd like to return the favor but your knowledge base is far greater than mine on this kind of stuff but these forums are lucky to have people like you.

About the overclocking...is it still applicable to this Rom or did I misread something?

As far as I know you can overclock on any rom including stock. Some roms are already overclocked so that you don't have to mess with it but there are apps such as Setcpu that you can check out to help with overclocking.

In case anyone wants to know about flashing a custom rom on the EVO 3D while being flashed to a different carrier I can say for sure that it works on mine. To go over, I have an EVO V ( vergin mobile ) that I "rooted" and "s-off'ed" and flashed a Sprint stock EVO 3D rom on before having it flashed to VERIZON ( prepay ). After all that, as far as roms go, I went with a stock based rom, to be safe, that had a lot of good features and that was the "MEAN ROM". So far everything is working great.
For flashing the rom I followed Brian706's and scotty85's suggestions for backing up everything. I did an APN backup, Titanium backup, complete backup thru fastboot, cleared casche, cleared dev, did not clear all (factory reset). After installing the rom/zip it rebooted itself and I let it loop for 10 min. then took the battery out and booted back into fastboot and re-installed "superuser patch zip" then rebooted and then I got that cool little Android Monster (boot screen) and Home screen and Verizon is "full on"!
Hope this helps anyone who wants to try it:D:D:D

I downloaded that app because I read what you said on another thread but when I opened it, it only let me max to 1188. I might need help with setting it up so it will overclock more if it is capable with this rom. Please instruct if you have time.

I personally haven't messed with overclocking... So I probably am not the best person to answer questions on that. I would wait for someone with experience in that field to chime in. I will say be careful tweaking though. You don't wanna overclock too much and burn out your processors.

I hope someone chimes in soon....I'm a speed junkie:D:D. I'm also new to the whole tech thing but I'm diggin it. I just wish I had the know-how to develop some stuff myself or a lot of extra money to figure things out the hard way, I've got some good ideas. I showed a couple of my friends my EVO and they have no idea what I'm doing but they are jealous as hell.

I wish I had the money to experiment too!

I am using zred gt version b. It is overclocked and really fast! It is gingerbread based though. He probably has overclocked ics roms too!

I take it you mean ZR3D.....I'll definitely check it out, thanks.:D

The read on it sounds great and it also incorporates the stock kernel which is great because messing with the stock kernel is where it seems most people have the biggest glitches. I also believe messing with the stock kernel will undo a flash to another carrier.
I'm going to read up a little more on the 4.3 GT version. Thanks again!

I didn't really use the xl one. I flashed it to check it out but went with gt. I wanted to stay on gb is why. The xl is ics. I like have been really happy with the speed of gt. It's a really nice rom however battery life suffers because of the overclocking. I'm actually considering going to ics for dropzero's new rom. I have flashed it and it's nice! I think upgrading is in the works. Search dropzero roms and download the Imagika one s4 rom if you want to check it out!

be careful not wiping data. with very similar roms you can get away with that, but always make a backup of a good working rom before flashing another, and if you DO have prollems doing a "dirty flash"(as its called when you do not wipe data) be prepaired to go back to recovery, and do a full wipe and re-install the rom to try and resolve any issues you may have.

flashing over very different roms can result in bootloops, splash hangs, and lots of app force closes and lag if it makes it to a booted rom.

have fun checking out some new roms :)

You have me wanting to try them all out but I know if I do I'll run across one that really boogers my 3D up. Time to do some more reading... I'll let you know what I try and how it turns out. I appreciate you intel!:D:D
