Root Getting the Desire HD an have no idea where to start

wich part does not make sense? if youre refering to format all partitions except sd card and factory reset,it doesnt really make sense to me either

I got that one from Team SmartDroid's ROM's.

Having a hard time figuring out what is left to reset after I basically nuked everything :D

IMO its not a bad idea to add boot and system to the recomended data, cache, and dalvik cache, but most roms are scripted to do this anyway

A lot of new ROM's even do a full wipe on their own. Blackout 3.1.0 was an odd one. Did a Data/Cache/Dalvik than the AROMA installer did a full wipe... Install failed.

Wipe all partitions except SDCard than the AROMA installer does a full wipe, that works. It is considered a bug though..

I get your point, if all ROM's were written perfectly (no disrespect meant), all we should have to do is a factory reset.

I think the factory reset + cache + dalvik works on 90% of the ROM's and does add a measure of safety.

I figure Ewoedo will be alright on his own once he realizes how easy it is to restore, and hence how safe it is to try things out. No fun having to follow instructions or wait for advice all the time.

I think once a new member gets this far, it is probably best to let them explorer further on their own.

Last rules:

Don't flash a Radio without consulting a Guide or Mod here.
Your rooted. Don't run AAHK again unless you want to go back to stock.

Maybe visit this post. It's where I go started. scotty85 guided me on how to install the recommend ARHD 6.3.3 radio, which you may or may not want to do.

Check out D-U-R-X's All Things Root Guide. There is more to all this than flashing ROM's and a few mods :D

Thank you all. You went out of your way to help me, and I appreciate it. I guess its time to start playing around with things.

My last question for a while though :P
My WiFi indicator in the status bar shows the lowest signal even though I am clearly in good range. It doesn't really matter, but any idea on what causes this?

This phones WiFi reception is not as good as others. I think the aluminum case has something to do with it. The WiFi antenna is attached to the battery cover. See if changing the phones orientation changes things.

Feel free to ask any questions or for more help. We will still all be here. Once you know how to restore, mistakes are no big deal. It's fun to experiment. Well, I like to anyway. Don't worry about making any mistakes. Just be careful about flashing Radios. Could brick your phone.

Ok, thanks. I think I will stay away from radios for now :)

And I flashed my first mod. The center clock mod for the status bar!

How do I do a restore without 4ext? Because without a working ROM, I won't be able to access it right?

Just asking in case something happens!

You will be able to restore with 4Ext even without a working ROM.

  • To access power and volume down
  • If that does not work, remove and return the battery than power and volume down again (can someone verify this. Have not done a battery pull in months).

This will bring you to the HBoot screen and you can select "Recovery" navigating with the volume buttons and selecting with power.

Essentially. 4Ext replace CWM on your phone. Hhhmmm. Yes, I can see how the way I wrote the guide gave you that impression.

If it is not broken don't fix it (not that I follows this). If you ever have to change it, @scotty85 is the man to go to.

Need some help. Could you take a look at this thread.

I was trying to confirm that the process was stopped before the downgrade was complete. If I remember the AAHK install process properly... after it downloads a big 300 MB or so file, you have to select it from the phone using volume and power keys. These seems to be where the process got interrupted.

Thanks.

Mine basically did everything automatically no need to press buttons unless prompted. The process was interrupted by him pulling out the battery as mine also went back to the hboot screen. I didn't touch the phone though. I too busy gaming ;-)

Not really anything I think will help him but I hope it does.

Good enough. I think I figured out where he got stuck. Thanks.

When putting my backups on my PC I noticed they are folders and not zips. I how do I use these if I need to? Like how do I restore a backup?

Just copy them back to /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup

Than got into recovery and restore from there by going to the backup/restore menu.

verified. :) pulling the battery will let you get to hboot, even if "fastboot" was checked in the rom. one tip is to press vol down prior to power, then hold on to them both until you see hboot

I think all this fun when people learn they can experiment on their own. But remember, you can ask any questions you want.

I am now a full fledged sith. Tried a different ROM but went back because I missed sense. Balckout ICS is next for me then.

D-U-R-X... our new Sith can take on three of your new Jedi's.

Might as well wait for Blackout 3.2. Should be out in a few days. It will have two bugs:

1. No WiFi Hotspot function.
2. Headset buttons wont work.

Take a look at Titanium Backup or My Backup Pro in Google Play. If you flash a lot of ROM's one of these apps can be useful.

You think we are still scare of Yoda? We have new recruits.

Anyway, I will be spending a few days on the AOKP side. How do you like the third generation of my evolving (inspired by/copied from LorD CloakaN) home screen layout in the other thread?

Know it's a different franchise, but...

It's good... I've been meaning to have a play with minimalistic text :)

Don't ask me how to configure this thing. It has so many settings, so basically I go with trial and error unit it turns out the way I like

Resistance is futile... Will be back on Sense as soon as Blackout 3.2 is out :p

Don't worry... I have had a bit of a go before. I just haven't played with it in AGES! :)

Minimalistic text isn't buggy for you? I was going to give it a go, but people in the play store commented that a recent update pretty much broke it.

I decided not to bother until it was fixed but maybe it was just them?

Guess I'll give it a go now.

Edit: I gave My Backup Root a go, going to see if I like it before buying PRO. Says my Busy box is out of date? I found a few "installers" on the Play Store. Just wondering which one you guys use?

I use Titanium Back-up which comes with BusyBox bundled with it and none o my other apps have needed it (or work with the one bundled with Titanium Backup).

Before that I used Stericson's BusyBox and had no issues. They all install the same thing.

Minimalistic Text seems a bit buggy or I just don't get it. When I set the font type or size it just does not come out they way I expected... but with by trial and error I get to where I want to go.

Remember, when you have a bad project. You don't have to trash it and start over. You can click on it and modify it again.

Guess ill get Titanium, looks like it will save me the hassle.

Also, congratulations on becoming a guide.

Thanks.

Ti Backup is a good choice. The free version is great, the paid version does thing much faster.

I tried both before. Initially, I like My Backup more. Ti Backup's interface is awfully busy. But after you get used to it, it is easy enough to use.

Where are you finding ROMs for the DHD on XDA? their forum is a bit confusing for me =P

Going to give ICS a run while I wait for Blackout too =D

I figured you would be getting bored of this ROM in a bit.

A simpler place to look is D-U-R-X's All Things Root Guide.
If you want to go to the wild wild West, here is the XDA DHD Development thread
.
With all of your next ROM's you are likely to encounter some issue or other. It is good to make sure everything is working before you try the more the other ROM's.

Before you flash a new ROM, test all your phones hardware. Still camera, camcorder, WiFi Hotspot, Bluetooth, GPS and the like.

Double check it it is stable (play a game?). Look at you OC_Deamon Controller, maybe take note of the speeds and voltage settings. Will be useful for future reference when you try ROM's with less efficient settings.
