Root Getting the Desire HD an have no idea where to start

Thanks. Time to get our and experiment. I can't wait to try out Blackout though, I hope 3.2 gets here soon.

ROM's are free... try as many as you want :D Make sure you have a Nandroid back-up that is good, and whatever happens you should be fine.

If you like tweaking and customizing, AOKP (the Rebellion) is much more interesting.

I love Sense, but I also love customizing things and doing stuff myself. I think I will be spending lots of time going back and forth between Sense and AOKP Roms.

Downloading Ice Cold Sandwich as I type :P

D-U-R-X said both thanks and gave you a like. He really is working hard to get you on the side of the Rebellion.

Now back (from my childish spat with D-U-R-X) to serious (Guide) mode. There is no reason to choose or be loyal to one platform or another. Or you may find a platform you like a stay loyal to that for months. We have all kinds. Only one rule... have fun (well and don't flash Radio's without advice).

Childish spats aside, I didn't like Sense... went for AOSP when I rooted (CM7 to be precise) and never looked back. Guess it's just down to what people prefer :)

Well I will be giving ICS a go tonight, so I'll tell you what I think after I give it a proper try D-U-R-X.

I have backed up all my apps with titanium. I read somewhere that restoring backups from different types of ROMs cam make the Rom buggy. It's example was restoring apps from a MIUI on a Sense ROM.

Is this true? Does it mean I shouldn't restore the apps I'vs backed up when.I go to ICS to save myself the hassle?

I could always try and just start again if things do get buggy, but just thougt I'd ask to save myself time.

It means restoring system apps. I usually let apps reinstall from the market Google Play and then restore app data once the apps are back on the phone, but it is possible to restore apps from TB :)

Ok, my mistake. So are bookmarks saved to my google account? They really are the only thing I absolutely need on a new Rom.

i kind of like sense in small doses. but for the most part im with D-U-R-X. AOSP is how i got used to android, and what i always come back to.

a "desensed" rom can be nice too- using a third party launcher, and no sense widgets :D my homescreen with apex launcher and beautiful widgets looks like my AOSP homescreen on cm10,but with the "pretty" sense icons and such in the menus.

Not sure. I have never enabled the back-up settings to Google Account when installing a ROM.

When on ICS, you may want to try the Chrome browser. If you use Chrome on your desktop and on your phone, the two sync. There are also apps that sync desktop browser settings to your phone browser.

Sorry, not to helpful in this regard. I don't use my phone for "regular" web browsing so I don't bother putting bookmarks. Regular web browsing meaning visiting my favorite sites.

I use the phone for emergency web browsing, which basically means I just go to the Search function and type my query.

Ok thanks. I'll be on. ICS as soon as I have free time then! Which is soon hopefully.

Really looking forward to something that isn't so "stock"

You should join "them" in this thread. Pretty interesting read.

Restoring apps + data from GB to ICS should be fine.

Restoring some apps from ICS to GB wont work.

I do not advise you back-up and restore system files.

I was checking a bit of that thread earlier, it is what made me decide to use ICS as my next ROM ;)

Sadly I might not have time to play with my phone till the weekend :'(

Something I've been seeing a lot is SmartassV2. What exactly is this, and what's a governer?

Governor's are software that controls processor performance.

On your ARHD install you have, what it the most advance system of governors for the DHD. Go to your app drawer and you will see the OC Daemon Controller. This app allows you to configure the Virtuous Over Clock Daemon built into the ROM.

When the screen is on, the processor is "governed" by the ondemand governor, and by default runs at speeds between 245 MHz - 1152 MHz.

When the screen is off, the conservative governor takes over, and by default runs at speeds between 245 MHz - 368 MHz.

I might have gotten the speeds wrong since I don't have access to that ROM right now.

ondemand has a set of "rules" which tell the processor to go to the faster speeds quickly when load is detected. Conservative tries to keep the processor at slower speeds.

Hhhmm... having a hard time explaining this.

If you go to the second tab, you can set smartassV2.

smartassV2 tries to do the same thing as the Virtuous Over Clock Daemon and its two governor system.

I have this post here... not sure if you will find it useful.

I think the Virtuous Over Clock Daemon is superior, but getting it to run on ROM's is hit and miss. So a lot of us use smartassV2.

Awesome! How would I get something like Smartassv2 on ICS?

I have ICS on my SD and I, hopefully, will be able to flash it during my lunch break.

Ice Cold Sandwich will allow you to set it in Settings > ROM Control > Performance (the path may be a bit wrong, don't have the ROM installed now).

For other ROM's, you can use something like No-Frills CPU Control from Google Play.

For now why don't you try it now? Second tab of your OC Daemon app, select smartassV2 :D

Sigh... Another one lost to AOKP :D

In fairness, I never got a bad md5sum from a file I downloaded completely.

When you downloaded ICS you were directed to a page with a long list of files:

IceColdSandwich-8.7.1.AOK... 06-Oct-2012 11:02 156620k
IceColdSandwich-8.7.1.AOK... 06-Oct-2012 10:20 4k
IceColdSandwich-8.7.2.AOK... 06-Oct-2012 14:41 156620k
IceColdSandwich-8.7.2.AOK... 06-Oct-2012 13:59 4k
IceColdSandwich-8.7.AOKP-... 30-Sep-2012 16:41 156616k
IceColdSandwich-8.7.AOKP-... 30-Sep-2012 15:56 4k

The small 4K files are the md5sum files.
