Root [GUIDE][CTmod] Rooting the Prevail [SPH-M820] for Dummies (written by a dummy)

They said this might work, we are gonna try it out first. If it works you(LV) will have to get with Caeadas and the mod to work it all out. Will let you know if it works out.

If thanks are an issue (and I'm not sure if it behaves like that or not), just copy the OP to its own thread, then move the first (not the second) to the trash and delete it. Then transfer ownership of the copied OP.Deletes don't wipe the thanks on that post, so the original OP will keep them, afaik.

which mod are you in touch with?

Xyro, he says he's on Tapatalk and can't do any changes right now to try I try that out. He said another mod my get in touch with me to do it unless I want to wait for him. After we try it if it works then they can go ahead and do it for you.

Mini Tool Partition Wizard Home Edition is FREE and can resize Fat32 partition and add EXT4 and SWAP partitions WITHOUT losing data on first (fat32) partition.

Easus has a free version as well.

Just thought I would contribute so people are not mislead into believing you have to fully wipe a transflash card to re-partition it (unless you are fully removing the initial primary partition)

This has been the case for years now, and free tools capable of repartitioning without data loss have been available for both Windows and Linux.

I can understand warning noobs to be extremely careful, and of the importance of backing up JUST IN CASE... but we also need to share the full story, repartitioning is not guaranteed data loss...

Thanks for the great info here, the great mods for our Galaxy Prevails, and the strong support for our hobby. (For some of us it's a life, not a hobby, and that's OK)

:-)

I can transfer ownership of posts (as you can see I've tested with the OP) without transferring thanks to anyone. So just let me know who is going to take over the first 3/4 posts.

Great job. Now you need to switch it over the LordVincent 90.

So I rooted my phone and did everything in Chapter 1 and 2. But do you have to do the ctmod? What are the advantages of doing ctmod? Also how do I remove apps boost put on my phone when I got it. When I go to super user nothing appears in the apps list. Also what else should I do now since I rooted.

one more thing do the ctmod change how everything looks on my phone?

Well, you don't have to use CTMod...... you can try any of the ROMS described here :

Samsung Galaxy Prevail: All Things Root Guide (updated 09/29/2012)

However, it seems that CTMod and cm7 are the most stable and common used ones. It's a matter of taste or need.

There are many avantages to a custom ROM..... No Bloatware programs, like you asked, almost unlimited space to install programs, smoother running apps, etc..... and much more.

And yes, different ROMS change how everything will look on your phone !

Ok I put ctmod on there now. Everything works great. I got one question with a rooted phone is there anyway to increase signal or download speed or tethering speed? Is there any cool stuff I can do with a rooted phone?

Signal/dl speed is mostly determined by your tower.

And there are TONS of things you can do with a rooted phone.

Like use it to broadcast a wifi signal to your pc, for one. For two, you can now install a reasonable amount of apps. For 3 you're now able to back up all your data (from apps) if you use titanium backup.

Basically, the point of rooting is to gain access to the system files (like running as admin in windows)

Just Google 'benefits of rooting Android' or 'top 100 rooted apps' or reference the all things root guide.

Just curious, why did you root your device if you didn't know wth you were doing it for? Lolz :D

I wanted to get rid of all the bloatware and also to partition my sdcard for more internal space. and someone told me that with rooted phones there's tweaks you can do to increase dl speeds. Plus Im getting a new phone in a couple months and always wanted to try rooting a phone.

Also I found this
http://androidforums.com/galaxy-pre...peedtest-net-results-after-couple-tweaks.html

It says after you dial ##3282# to enter your msl. How do I know what my msl is?

Also wanted to try to overclock my phone

You can't use the ##3282# ( called "Hidden Menu" ) with most ROM's. You would need to flash "Halfass ROM" to get the hidden menus, then flash your current ROM back. Also, as LordVincent already said, your speed is determend by the towers in your area. Sometimes, changing PRL maybe helps, but not always. I never get more than 356 down where I live !!!

To get your MSL, you need a program from the market "Get My MSL" !!

If you get a new phone in a couple of month, be sure to get one for which root is available. Not all phone models can be rooted !

Last post I promise. Everything on my phone seems to work except google play when I open it it just stays on the loading screen.

Do that :

Go to SETTINGS>>>>Applications>>>Manage Applications>>>Select "All", then look for Download Manager, Google PlayStore and Google Service Framework, click on each one of them and clear cache and data, Then Reboot your phone and wait like 15 minutes to get Google Play refreshed, then open and try again.

PS: If you still have questions, let us know !!! And always remember : BACKUP , BACKUP , BACKUP !! ( as LV said, use Titanium and/or do a backup in Clockworkmode ( Recovery ) too..... Always have your backup on the SD-Card AND on the computer !! ;)
