Are you trying the instructions below. This will pop up another window with the command prompt.

right click on your android folder while holding shift and select open command window here (3rd or 4th option).

I don't think you can do that in windows xp...that option didn't come out until vista or windows 7...

When I was on xp, it was frustrating because I had to click "start" then "run" then "cmd" then type in the path to my Android folder...It was a PITA!:)

I missed that he has XP........It's early so I'll ask for a pass :)

lol:) I also need a pass once in a while, so here ya go!

You opened up the command prompt at your Android folder, where, you should have 3 files correct?
adb.exe
fastboot.exe
AdbWinApi.dll

Are you in the "fastboot" on your screen on your phone?
Do you have htc sync installed?
Do you have java installed?
Sorry for the questions...

yeah I do, although in the android folder the adb and fastboot icons just say fastboot and adb, then don't have ".exe" after them. Have I done this wrong then?

No, that's fine..windows hides file extensions.
Do you have anything else installed that may be trying to communicate with phone such as pdanet, or doubletwist?

I don't believe so, but I will run a search just to be sure. could it be that I set my usb option to charge only on my phone?

you should be in your bootloader screen. See the first few steps on the website...:)

yep I am in my bootloader screen and everything, I followed all the steps just when I go to put in fastboot oem get_identifier_token in the command window it says waiting for device

I guess your comment here thru me for a loop thinking your phone was booted up and not in the bootloader screen.:)

o.k...does the word on your phone screen say "fastboot usb" in red letters when the phone is plugged in?

Perhaps try a different usb cord?

okay I did step one on the revised rooting gingerbread 2.3.5
htcdev method

then I did step two
ADB command method

now step three
I have not done the vr superwipe should I?

I also am going to use the rom recommended

And when it says go into recovery that means to turn it on by pressing power and volume down at the same time right?

Superwipe....optional....it helps to wipe prior to a rom flash....I would download it now but do not unzip it...until you get used to wiping, use it....:)

Recovery....the volume/power combo will put you into bootloader screen....from there you can select recovery to get into recovery...:)

alright it's done I am rooted

except for some reason when I click on the playstore it says "the linked program is no longer installed on your phone"

can anyone help me out with that?
