Root Every unsigned non stock rom I try to flash gets stuck in a boot loop

Lord Jezo

Newbie
I did the HTC Dev unlock thing and then achieved S-Off using unrevoked and the method described elsewhere.

It's an evo with the newer hboot 2.18

I have tried partitioning the sd card, wiping all the caches, and doing a full format. No matter what custom rom I try the phone gets stuck in a boot animation loop and never fully gets loaded.

I have tried Deck, Reloaded, even Cyanogen, same results with a looping animation once its begins to start up.

The stock image loads fine, the 2.2 image needed to get the s-off in the first place. I was stuck in the loops all morning flashing stuff, went back to the 2.2 image that is passed around, PC36IMG_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1_Radio_2 .15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed, and it loaded with no issue on the first shot.

What am I missing here? I know it's harder with 2.18 than the older hboots of the EVO but the loader says s-off right on it..

I can switch around recoveries from CWM to A. Ra, I can putz about in the bootloader and recovery, but I cannot flash a thing but the stock 2.2 signed rom. Flash stock and it loads right up with no issue.

ok so you have tried a lot of things we need to have a starting place from here.

can you please post what your bootloader says at the top. we need to know what is your hboot now, does it say locked or unlocked, do you have s-off or not and lastly what your radio is at.

oh yeah and what recovery you have now as well.

then we can take it from there.

So the HBOOT changed from the .18 to a .10, that must have been when I did the downgrade thing to get the S-OFF

It said in a purplish sort of color before I did the S-OFF bit **UNLOCKED** or something similar, that was what the htcdev scripts did for me. After the flashing of the flash_image and mtd-eng and then running UNREVOKED for s-off that went away, it now says neither and the text above is what is there.

Recovery currently installed is RA Revamped -- RA-supersonic-v4.3-smelkusMOD

ok thanx for the info. yes when you downgraded your misc partition and flashed the PC36IMG ruu, it will change your hboot and remove the unlocked status of the phone.

and you have smelkus. this is very good.

so basically to flash a rom:
1.download rom of your choice and move it to the sd card
2.make a nandroid backup
3.wipe everything but the sd card(i do mine 3x)
4.flash the rom
5.reboot

if you do this, you should have no problems. however, if you run into issues, it could be because of a few things"
  • bad download
  • bad flash
  • sd card is corrupted

What's a good safe stable rom to try?

I will try something fancier later but right now I just want to use one that should work. What is one that everyone knows is stable for even the most sensitive systems?

Like I said originally, I have tried a few already and it flashes fine but then goes into a boot loop at the animation.

The card is fine because to restore I load up the PC36IMG into the HBOOT and it will read it in automatically and go straight into sense.

ok go here:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/618281-list-utilities-apps-roms-kernels-og-evo.html

in the rom section we have the staff picks that has some great suggestion of roms to try out.

mikg3.11 the fullwipe version is a great one to start out with. but the others are great as well.

in the second post i go into more details about roms and kernels.

All righty, mikg3.11 fullwipe managed to load up. I have it running now and signed in to my account with no issue.

I'll take a backup of this one then proceed to try Reloaded with a fresh download. If that doesnt work then something is really screwy.

So now I know it can run signed roms (mikmik says its signed on his page so thats what I am assuming), we'll try something else next.

So with this rom, I have never used it before. How is it? My main reason for rooting is to get rid of all the Sprint nonsense and have a nice clean experience. I see this one uses Sense, is that a big battery drain?

mikg3.11 is an awesome rom. it has all of the bloatware removed and it is a sense rom. all of the roms on the list should be signed so you should not have any issues. i think that your issue might have been just not wiping properly before.

and roms really do not play that much into battery life. that part is more on the kernel side. sure some roms have tweaks to help improve battery life, but kernels is where you can change it significantly. when you get a chance please read the second post of the list. it will explain it further.

I'll keep it around for a while then, as long as it's stable and free of the usual nonsense then I wont have an issue.

Do you know if there is any built in way to put the date up in the status bar near the clock or would I need an app for that?

Might be a setting in MikTweaks for it..:)

Is there a Staff's Picks for Sense roms?

Oops..

I meant Sense kernels.

I have only used ASOP based kernels before like SavagedZen and.. Tiamat I think.. and have never messed around with Sense ones.

Well, as far as kernels go, ymmv with those. What works awesome for my phone, may not be so awesome on your phone.

The best advice I can give is to try each one and let each one run a few days before you try the next one.

Just make sure that the sense kernel is used with a sense rom, and the AOSP kernel used with an AOSP rom.
:D

Does MikMik have a place like Cyanogen and others that let me choose the CPU governer and speed settings or does that not exist in Sense base roms?

I don't think so, but I could be wrong. When I was on MikG, I used
SetCPu to control governer/scheduler etc.

There are other apps that can do that also, but as far as MikG having one built into the rom, I can't say that it does.

Oh, okay, so in Sense I can use an app, thats easy enough. I'll check that out.

Why did you leave Mik? I see you said when you were on mik.

Well, Mik was the first rom I ran after rooting. Ran that for about 4 months or so, got bored of it and found Decks Reloaded and decided to try it.

Don't get me wrong, I loved MikG3.11 but find the AOSP rom like Decks is faster and more options available, such as the Mason kernel.

I don't flash much but I like to set up tweaks on the rom here and there.

So I am currently on Reloaded, just waiting for his update or I am going to try SmurfMod9 when PapaSmurf updates his rom also....
I got a copy of Mik rom on my sd card if I want to go back:)

With sense ROMS, youll need an app like SETCPU to control the overclock and things like what governor you are using.

SETCPU is a paid app, but if you want to test it out before buying, you can easily find the app for free on XDA (this isnt pirating, the app developer has it for free for XDA members). However, the app on XDA is wayy outdated compared to the app on the play store, so if you like it and find that you use it a lot I would highly suggest supporting the dev to get the newest updates.
