Help Battery keeps draining on Evo 4G

JonJones84

Newbie
Despite trying to kill off all the running apps and adjusting the brightness on the screen, the battery keeps on draining like there's no tomorrow.

If I play a game or send texts, the battery will go from fully charged to a quarter drained in less than 20 minutes.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm also having issues with the keyboard layout. Everytime I type, I get this annoying box that predicts what I'm about to type out, but won't let me type the word unless I type the whole thing out and press on it to paste.

Are you using the original battery from my own experience the evo batteries don't last more than a year and change, also it could be an app running in the background constantly, I think it is good practice to occasionally wipe the phone and start new other than that you could try turning off wifi and gps when you don't need them

Well, in answer to your first question, 693standby had some good suggestions, age of battery could be a factor, or a runaway app in the background....
To check what is using your battery, try this app:
Better Battery Stats

It can monitor what is using the battery.

As far as your keyboard, what keyboard are you using? Stock android? or another keyboard. There could be a setting for text prediction you can change.:)

Edit: moved your thread here for better exposure for your issue :)

Hey, you're a Guide now. Congrats, man! When did you get that promotion? :D

Yeah. I'm using the original battery and hardware. I've shut off 4G, Bluetooth and other non-necessary stuff. Ha, my battery is now at 25%.

I need wifi on since it's the only way I get internet connection. lol

Jesus, is 3 years REALLY that long for a mobile phone battery? If it's ancient, then I might consider changing it.

That app costs money and I don't want to pay when there other apps that are rated as good and are free. Battery dr saver - task killer looks decent enough.

I honestly don't know what kind it is. It's a Swype-esqe type of keyboard and it's quite annoying when you have to spend 3 minutes to type. I'd have to screenshot it and upload it, but my phone won't support any apps unless I root it.

I would recommend a new battery....3 years is pretty good if you are now having issues with battery drainage...you can pick them up pretty cheap now:)

Didn't realize BBS was a paid app, sorry, but yes there are other apps to monitor battery usage, you are correct.

Have you tried a different keyboard app? Do you like to stay with a Swype-type keyboard?
You can try GoKeyboard
That is free, I checked first:) If memory serves me, there is a Swype-ish keyboard option on that.

I'll purchase a battery and see if this solves the problem. As far as, the keyboard issue goes, I have solved temporarly for now, but I still prefer the Android keyboard. I downloaded a new keyboard that's got spell check and isn't as annoying as Swype.

Hackers keyboard is cool and free, also you can add a dictionary so if word prediction is annoying just don't download the dictionary, I haven't messed with it too much but it does have some really nice features

Nope. Shut that off as well, along with 4G, and Bluetooth.

This phone is nothing but a glorified iPod Touch. lol

You shut off airplane mode or turned it on? You'd want it on to deactivate the radios.

Also you considered rooting it? If it is a rogue app or just the Sense s/w causing the extreme drain, you will have more ways to improve your phone if you go the rooted way.

I'm new here, and I've also been having trouble with my phone and battery life. This has been going on since mid-summer. While the drain is not quite as extreme as 75% in <20 minutes, I don't remember the battery ever draining the fast before. I fully charge the phone before going to bed every night, and each time I wake up, it's sitting near 90% or less! I went to the store to get it checked about a week ago, and was told that I had a defective battery, so I requested a replacement. It arrived a few days ago, and so far, there has been barely any difference! I used to be able to get through an entire day with ~70% at the absolute least, but now, it only takes a few hours to reach that number. Please help me! (Also, I am NOT rooted, if that helps)

Is there a particular application you downloaded at that time in summer.
You could have an app whose activities act as a kernel/partial wakelock resulting in your battery drain.
It could even be a system app. I had mms causing something like this due to a partial wakelock.

Welcome LoneDroid!!
I concur with Robo, could possibly be an app that never closes or is stuck on refreshing itself. (and don't think using a task killer will help, it wont) Are you using a live wallpaper now? Could the signal in your area (tower) have changed, thereby making the phone search for a signal? (a big battery drainer).
What does your battery usage screen indicate?

I've done two to three factory resets since then, yet the problem has continued. As for apps, the only one I could think off of the top of my head as a suspect is Go SMS, but even then, I don't text very frequently throughout the day. Also, I am already aware of steering clear from task killers, so that isn't a problem. I don't use live wallpapers, and the signal doesn't seem any different from before.

Checking my battery usage, it tells me that Cell Standby is the largest user at 43%, while Phone Idle is 40% and Display is 17%.

Sounds like a wakelock issue with a rogue app.

After a factory reset, did you run it without downloading any apps? You'll probably need to install apps one or a few at a time to pinpoint the issue.

Whenever I did a factory reset, I would immediately go to re-download the apps from the market. Talking on the phone would also drain the battery much faster than usual; my usage would show the dialer using up more than 20% after talking for all but two minutes at the most. What's worse is that this stays in usage for the rest of the day without any more calls. :(

Does it drain alot slower if you do not use it? As in, the screen is off?
Or does it seem to drain quickly while using it?
Have you gotten/downloaded any OTA updates lately?

Even when I'm not using it (the screen is off), it drains almost as if I were using it. When I went to bed last night at around 8PM, I made sure the phone was fully charged before I went to sleep. When I woke up at 1AM, it was sitting at 82% if I remember right. It has never drained that quickly before. And no, I haven't updated anything recently.

Is your awake time "bar" always full?

You could try an app such as Better Battery Stats
in the play store to track down the offending app or program.
Now it's not free...I think like $3.00, but I use it and is very helpful.
There may be other apps that are free that do the same thing, but I do not know, as I use BBS myself
