who do you think will get the EVO first?

1. Best Buy Stores?
2. Sprint Stores?
3. Sprint TeleSales/Online?

i forget who got it first for the Pre. i think it was Sprint Stores?

any rhyme or reason or rule of thumb to predict what will happen with EVO launch?

nice - thanks for posting. i'm definitely getting 2 extra wall chargers and a car charger. i MIGHT get one of those silicone cases but i doubt it.

i'm a minimalist and don't really like a lot of unnecessary contraptions.

I have to agree with you Bill. It seems that a focal point of the Froyo will be to get rid of all the crap that comes along with an OS and let the user decide. Good stuff.
I really think the manufacturers are still going to have the stuff installed, but it will be part of 'userland' so to speak, like running UserCustomization on a windows mobile phone. As in, it will still be installed, but it will be installed as an application, not burned in as part of the rom. Granted, since it's not a part of the rom, carriers and manufacturers can choose not to include the apps, but they will be available in the marketplace to install (or update, if the app was already on the phone).

Hey Bill, I wasn't around when you followed up about how Froyo works earlier, but I read your posts about it just now... I think an important point is that the writers of the article you linked didn't get any inside info, but they're just re-reporting the engadget scoop, and they're adding some extra words to the story.

They say: "Named "Froyo", Google's next Android version will be detached of the usual set of first party applications and core components that currently populate the OS. Instead of bundling those applications with the operating system, Google will instead make them available through the Android Market for download. This is currently how updates to Google Maps are handled on Android."

And Engadget's words are: "We've been given reason to believe that the company will start by decoupling many of Android's standard applications and components from the platform's core and making them downloadable and updatable through the Market, much the same as they've already done with Maps."

So, yes, the "platform core" will be a separate component from programs like maps, gmail, google nav, etc, which will be upgradeable through the market, but you can bet that when you get a new android phone, even the most stripped down "Google Experience" phones with no Sense or extra UI features, it will have all the usual google apps installed. It does mean, however, that IF a manufacturer or user wanted to make a stripped down rom with no extras, it would be much easier, but that doesn't make any sense for most companies that want you to have the full experience right out of the box. Their example that maps is already handled that way is a good hint, I mean it's included in every rom that comes out on new phones, it just happens to be updateable through the market without waiting for an OS update which will be the case for more components with Froyo.

I agree that this isn't something to argue about, and really we'll just have to wait and see how it works when it happens as all there is to go on now is the engadget article and our own interpretation of their words.

On another topic, I'm watching Late Night w/ Jimmy Fallon right now, and the head editor from Engadget is a guest.... I'm 100% sure he'll be showing off an iPad, but maybe he has an EVO to show off also???? Probably not, but I can hope!
Thanks, mogulust, this a very thoughtful post and I appreciate you input.

My argument wasn't so much that the EVO would be stripped down with Froyo, but I was thinking Google Navigation would have to be downloaded, just like it is right now for other phones with Android 2.1. This whole conversation began when andiron asked if Google Navigation would run on the EVO, since the phone will come with Sprint Navigation. Even though it's a Google experience phone, Sprint is the one that decides which programs are installed right out of the box. The way I see it, the phone won't have two navigation programs installed, but I didn't want andiron to worry about it. Either way, Google Navigation will be available and that's all I was trying to say. I'm sorry if we had a misunderstanding.

I hope that either htc, as a part of Sense, or google with their next os update, will implement a built in task switcher.
My HTC Hero has Android 1.5 with Sense UI. When I press and hold the "home button", it brings up the task manager with a list of running programs. Then all you have to do is click the icon of your choice to switch applications.

Don't worry about that. They are only suing to stop the sales and only the courts can do that.

Well guys, we should worry. A lower Federal District granted injunctive relief, preventing importation of any HTC device for now.........

Hence, the "appeal" to remove it. This could go on for awhile, as HTC has not filed it, and the Court has not set it down for a hearing. The judge can take a long time in issuing an order. I have personally waited months for such.

I will try to dig into this over weekend, as I have access to Fed online Judicial.

I do not know about the PRE, but the Hero was available at Best Buy (via pre-order) one whole day before it was available everywhere else.

The Pre came out at Sprint stores and Best Buy on launch. Both had VERY limited supplies. Telesales came later.

I would think that Sprint stores would definitely get it first, and probably Best Buy for launch. It really is going to depend on how many devices they can produce before the launch. Palm had low quantities which choked the entire launch.

I finally conviced myself to join up because I found an article that interested me greatly. It compares the Evo, Galaxy-S, Droid, and Iphonewon't. It is a blog post, but this guy Electrofreak knows his stuff it seems and has a very unassuming style since he doesn't really jump to premature conclusions. He would fit in here well (maybe he is here already and I forgot.)

The main point of the article is to compare the Samsung 'Hummingbird' chipset likely on the Galaxy-S to the 'Snapdragon' and 'Snapdragon 2/Scorpion' chipsets. Its somewhat in depth and technical, but if I can understand it, anyone should be able to.

The obsessions of an electronics freak: Hummingbird vs Snapdragon: 1 Ghz smartphone showdown

He also created a nice side by side spec snapshot if you don't want to read the entire article:
ARM SOC Breakdown

I am somewhat hopeful for the rumored Galaxy-S Pro. It is rumored to be the Galaxy-S with a physical keyboard. Someone on the net mocked one up (kind of like how Billsmed mocked up a Supersonic with a keyboard)

Galaxy-S Pro will likely have a 4" Super AMOLED screen, a bit better processor than the Evo allegedly and a physical keyboard I could use with my giant Gorilla fingers (the LG Aloha a few pages back was another keyboard option too). If the Evo had a physical keyboard it would be the ultimate device for me.
Hi PyroSporker, welcome to the forum. I appreciate your input and enjoyed reading Electrofreak's blog. He's a good writer, so I bookmarked his Hummingbird vs. Snapdragon article so I can go back and read it again later. I was intrigued by the fact that the Galaxy-S has a hard drive. It beats the EVO 4G in other areas as well, including Super-AMOLED, but I wasn't all that impressed with the Samsung Instinct that Sprint was calling the iPhone killer. It makes me leery of the Galaxy-S, but no doubt, that phone is showing us what the future holds.

There seems to be a lot of interest in physical keyboards, so I found this article from C/net interesting: Touch-screen phones have the edge, surveys show "Owners of cell phones with touch screens are happier with their devices than are those who use physical keyboards and other input methods on their phones, says J.D. Power."

Oh no, please say it is not so!

I'm still going to believe the EVO 4G will be released this summer until we hear something different from Sprint.

I'm going with Bill in saying not to worry about anything til there's an official announcement from Sprint or HTC.

AppleInsider | HTC says Apple's patent suit has not affected its operations

HTC says Apple's patent suit has not affected its operations
By Katie Marsal
Published: 03:00 PM EST

The fact that the U.S. International Trade Commission has agreed to look into Apple's claims of patent infringement against HTC has not fazed the Taiwanese handset maker, its president said Friday.

According to Reuters, HTC Chief Executive Peter Chou said the suit from Apple, which has accused his company of violating 20 iPhone-related patents, has not affected its operations.

"It's part of business," Chou reportedly said at a news conference. "We need to face it and everyone can talk through it."

His comments come a few days after the ITC agreed to review Apple's allegations of patent violations by HTC. Apple has sought to ban the importation and sale of HTC handsets, which include a number of devices powered by the Google Android mobile operating system.

HTC formally responded to the suit last week, when the company said it has no plans to back down as a result of Apple's legal threat. Google, the creator of the Android mobile operating system that is at the center of the patent infringement suit, has also said it will stand by its partners, including HTC.

Apple's lawsuit is largely believed to be an indirect shot at Google, which is a close partner with HTC in making the Nexus One and myTouch 3G, two phones specifically cited in Apple's complaint. In January, a firmware update to the Nexus One added multi-touch functionality system-wide to the portable device.

The legal battle began in early March, when Apple filed its complaint against HTC, suing the Taiwanese smartphone maker over the alleged infringement of 20 patents related to the iPhone's user interface, underlying architecture and hardware.

I advise you to say away from the comments on the article cause they are of the "die! competition die! i love iphone!!!"

If Apple can get this injunction and stop the import of HTC phones it is rather incredible! It's like the judge has already found in favor of Apple. Think of how much this hurts the pocketbook of all parties involved...HTC and Sprint, accessory makers etc. A decision to halt import, even if it doesn't stick, is a major blow to these parties. You would think something like this wouldn't be possible and that any decisions against HTC would be AFTER they were found guilty of wrong doing. If what I hear is true....the Incredible is already in warehouse...so the guys over at Verizon might not be affected. This is a major bummer. I go back to my original line...this concerns me. :(

OKAY...I'll leave this post intact....but just read other replies. Hell....I don't know what to think!

Welcome to AF PyroSporker and Todds7.

PyroSporker: That's an interesting article between the two processors, seems like the Samsung is developing one nice chip. The Galaxy would be a real winner IMO if they just proved their commitment to regular updates on their current phones on the market. Those two issues would hold me back but also the fact that the EVO will have 4G is an automatic must have feature for me especially because I'll be keeping the phone for two years. The 4G era is about to blast off and I don't want to be left behind "stuck on 3G" as they will say years from now :p (T-Mobile is rolling out a nice 3G upgrade though). Kind of crazy how Samsung made an Android phone that will kill it's own bada device (Samsung Wave) that hasn't even been released yet.

A physical keyboard for me was a must. Before the EVO 4G I was set on getting the new CDMA BlackBerry Bold (rumored to release in Feb...still hasn't released). I don't have a problem with touch screens but I preferred a physical keyboard. With the EVO 4G I quickly forgot about the damned keyboard lol. The screen is so large typing would be easy although I will miss the physical feedback of a QWERTY. It's a small sacrifice I'm willing to make for such a great phone.

Todds7: I'm with you dude, I hate how I'm so anxious for this phone. When the day comes and the EVO 4G is released...I think there will be a giant exhale heard around the world.

As far as I know, there haven't been any new noteworthy articles regarding the lawsuit. By worrying about it and casting doubt plays right into Job's hand, which is exactly what Apple wants and I'm not buying into it.

Thanks, ekt8750. I think we should just relax and not dwell on this subject. I worried about it before CTIA, but things seem to be moving forward with the EVO, so I'm not very concerned about it at the moment.

The last thing to be affected by lawsuits like these are consumer sales. These huge corporations will shelter their ability to sell their product to the end. Im not worried at all

Gotta have the white version of the phone with a deep blue gel and the car dock. gotta...gotta....gotta!!!!!

That way it will go with my white '07 Mustang GT with Ford blue GT stripes. HEHEHE

i like red/white but black/red has always been my favorite. and i never put any cases on my phones/ipods.

btw got the ipad in the mail. nothing special. kinda cool.

click on image for full size

Edit: I copied the post over to the Official iPad thread located here.

Nice iPad, dylan88. You should give it to me if it's nothing special. :D

And about the color of EVO. I gotta have the black! You can never go wrong with black, honestly. I would get tired of any other color other than black.

Edit: I copied the post over to the Official iPad thread located here.

If only the case is different, ill prob just buy a white case after buying the black Evo. Why not have both and just swap when you feel like it?

I've been lurking around here for quite a while but haven't quite made the decision on which "summer" phone to get. Thanks to all the wonderful information you all have provided, the EVO will be my first smartphone and I will be retiring my ever-so-lousy enV touch and Verizon service after 8 years.

The enV touch was also my first touch phone (yeah, I have little phone experience) and it has really left me feeling bitter towards touch phones. But I'm hoping that is just a flaw of the enV and the EVO will be much better!
