VZW, Tethering & the GN2

Riverdome

Newbie
I have a rooted Moto X which I am able to tether wirelessly. Is the expectation that we would have to root the GN2 in order to tether without paying Verizon's tethering fee?

Really want the GN2 but I'm not willing to monthly for tethering.

I thought at one point the carriers were told they couldn't stop users from installing apps, even if the app allowed tethering w/o paying the fee. Perhaps those apps require root.

Yes. The only way to tether without paying for the carrier fee is through root.

You should check your facts before you tell someone something "matter of fact".

There is a app in the play store called FoxFi, you can use that to hotspot without any additional charge and without having to root your phone. In addition if you are on Verizon, the FCC ruled that Verizon cannot stop, prevent or do anything to customers to limit apps they can use to tether/hotspot for free.

Verizon's 4G LTE network is built on top of wireless bandwidth that Verizon bought from the government (specifically, the C Block of 700 MHz spectrum) a long time ago. That purchase came with a restriction called the Open Access Rule, which says anyone using it to provide service "shall not deny, limit, or restrict the ability of their customers to use the devices and applications of their choice on the licensee's C Block network." That means as long as you're a paying customer and using their equipment, Verizon can't keep you from spreading the wireless love to your iPad, your laptop, or any other device you own.

I was unaware of that app. Always good to know.

No worries, I came out of the woodwork after reading these forums for the past week to finally post on this injustice. FoxFi is the best app and I use it everyday at my office to hotspot my Galaxy Note 10.1

Everyone I've shown the app to thinks its the best thing since sliced bread.

I thought I remembered something along those lines. Thank you, now I just need a release date from VZW and I'll be a happy camper.

Thanks all for your help.

Dont forget, FoxFi is availible now and works on ANY android phone regardless of carrier.

Hotspot for free, without root.

I appreciate your post and the information you provided, but you probably don't want to be so patronizing in future posts, especially to someone like BB. Doesn't seem like she was offended so no harm done, just a friendly suggestion.

Added: I had heard FoxFi mentioned before but I had never used it. Going to download and try it right now...

Sounds good. Sorry BB if i came off a little rough.

You can buy Extended Controls widgets...they have a hotspot creator that will let you bypass the menu options for the actual plan. Works on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, worked on the Note...likely will work on the Note 2.

it's a wifi hotspot only not a true tether.

For USB tethering, you have klink, east tether, and I think foxfi is USB too. If you want WiFi tether you may need to root.

Anyone using FoxFi on a Note 2? It doesn't work on "all" phones even though it should.

Anyone confirm it works on the Note 2 specifically other than "it should work"?

foxfi is not working on my note 2. Some people have been able to get it to work over bluetooth though but I have not been able to get it to work with my IPAd 3. Supposedly my ipad needs to be jailbroken and thats not possible atm.

So you are able to broadcast the signal but your ipad 3 cannot pick it up?

BTW: I preordered my Note 2, but have not gotten it yet, I don't see why it wouldn't work on the gn2. I have a razr maxx right now and it works great.
