Root Never rooted, hboot 6.16.1002 EVO 4G

I've been trying to root my phone and have not found a guide for hboot 6.16.1002 / S-OFF. What I have read explains that my phone must already be rooted with hboot 6.16.1002 / S-OFF. This phone came from Sprint and I am the original owner. I have never rooted the phone. I tryed downloading SuperUser app and it would not work, since my phone was not rooted. I downloaded root checker app and it said the phone was not rooted. What guide or steps should I use to gain superuser control and be able to flash custom roms. I am currently running Gingerbread 2.3.5.

Do you have a custom recovery?
When you power off into there boot loader and you select recovery, where does it take you?

If you got a custom recovery you should be able to flash a custom Rom.
If you're on a stock Rom downloading su from the market usually is not enough.
Someone might be able to link you before I can, at work at the minute.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!
so being that you are s-off, you are partially rooted. all you need is a custom recovery and either flash the su (superuser) file or flash a custom rom(all custom roms have su cooked in).

if you do not have a recovery then do this:

so go here:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

skip the rooting part(you have s-off already) and go to the switching recoveries section to get the info on how to get a custom recovery installed.

next you need to make a nandroid backup. instructions are in the guide

next you have two choices:
1.stay on stock by flashing the http://themikmik.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5379&d=1327588654

or

2.flash a rom. i would highly suggest that you try mikg3.11. it is very much like stock, but it sooooooooo much better. it has bloatware removed, the sprint hotspot hacked among other features.

so go here:
MikG v3.11 [3/9/2012]
and download the full wipe version.

use the guide for flashing a rom instruction.

hope this helps. any more questions please feel free to ask.

Welcome surfingvette1!!
You have good advice from robo and Ocn!
Your phone, like ocn said, is partially rooted.
Just follow his instructions and you'll be good :)
It was rooted via Revolutionary, and that's the way I did it. I have the same hboot # also. (see my sig:) )
imo, having a rooted phone gives you more options to troubleshoot and fix issues among other things!

I'll also vouch for MikG. I've tried quite a few ROMs and MikG is the best Sense ROM I've found. A common kernel is called Anthrax, although I'm currently using one called Classic from the MikG forums as it does not appear to overheat my phone as much. There are also AOSP ROMs without Sprint's Sense included, but I personally didn't like those as much as they came across as unpolished to me.

Thanks guys, alot of great advice. Went with Amon Ra recovery, good program. Not a fan of the blue start up screen associated with the program though. Trying out Cyanogen 7, this was the last stable version for this phone. Made a mistake not backing up Sprint apps like voicemail and navigation. Had to jump through some hoops but got them working. Been trying a lot of new settings, enjoying it. Thanks.

I've got an HTC Evo 4G that has the hboot 6.16.1002 / S-OFF, and I downloaded and flashed the Amon Ra 2.3.

Android version: 2.3.5
Baseband version: 2.15.00.12.19
Kernel version: 2.6.35.10-g94d0005
Build number: 5.07.651.1 CL356670
Software number: 5.07.651.1 710RD
PRI version: 2.33_003
PRL version: 60690

When I attempt a backup all I get is a screen full of "."'s. I left it running all night long, but even after 7 hours it was still going.

Has anyone encountered this?

John

Welcome to AF!!!
The "." are normal but did it eventually say, "backup complete" at the bottom?
Depending on what you backed up and how much data is backed up, you may get between 2 to 10 lines of "."'s then it should say "backup complete" at the bottom:)

Thanks for the welcome!

No... the screen was completely full and still running the "." at the bottom when I woke this morning.

As for a full SD card. I removed all easily replaceable files until I had only 4 of 32G occupied. I can't imagine a back up file larger than the 28G of free space! :)

Were you able to get out of it? Can you try it again?:)

What if I were to completely erase the SD card (after the backup, of course!)?
With that size card you have, 32GB, I would think you have plenty of room.
Try to install the recovery again...or install smelkus recovery...see my sig in my first post for a link for smelkus:)

Screen's nearly full of dots. It's been running for nearly 30 minutes.

I'm wondering if I should just go through the whole rooting process from start to finish.

hmmm..something is not quite right...did you re flash Amon or did you install smelkus?

What rom are you on? Not that is matters but just curious is all:)

As far as I know, I've not installed any custom roms.

I rooted this phone several months back, then had some issues and tried reverting back to stock.

However, I still have S-OFF

HBOOT-6.16.1002

I did re-flash to the smelkus recovery, and that was what I attempted to use this last time.

Do you have any other recommendations? Would going through the full process be detrimental?

You will probably get some errors if you go thru the rooting process again.
I'm wondering now, with 2 different recoveries not able to make a backup, that you need to format your sd card.
Before you do that, can you run "root only" apps?
Such as titanium backup?

Interesting.

I flashed the recommended Mik rom, and it appears to be working. I have root access, but not the Google Play app.

I'm going to try another recovery backup. If that does not work, I'll format the SD card and copy to backup I made via usb cable to it.

I'll get back with what happens.

Found Google Play app.

The recovery backup worked.

Now to copy back the files I backed up.

Also, I noticed that the power appears to be draining quite fast. I unplugged at 100% about 20 minutes ago, and now it says it's at 85%...

Hints on power conservation?

As far as the battery drainage, let the rom/kernel combo settle for few days...then we can go from there :)
Glad the backup worked and you got play store !!

As soon as the phone reads 100% and you pull the plug, it will appear to drain fast. That is normal. Unless you flash an sbc (superior battery charging) kernel. But even with that, after the phone hits 100% it takes an hour or 2 for the sbc to kick in....more about that later tho :)

Just let 'er settle a few days :)

I'm back! And it didn't take that long. :-)

Just a quick question. With the Mik ROM, on the lock screen there are the 4 icons and the unlock ring. Since I don't like the stock mail program I use mailDroid and removed the stock mail program. In doing so, one of those 4 icons is now blank ( it used to be Mail).

Is there a way to customize those icons on the lock screen?
