Root Do not Factory Reset your Rooted Phone

these instructions are outdated/obsolete. The link the OP placed in his post to the xionia recovery does not contain a .zip file for the recover and only has instructions on how to install it via adb/terminal emulator.

Edit: just read the previous page about the "optimus v: all things root" post. never mind. thanks.

BusyBox has all the necessary binaries for all tasks performed with root access. There not included in Stock or Froyo ROMs, but are in most all ROMs newer than.

Sorry, but I have no idea what this means. Exactly what are the necessary binaries and why do I need them?

It might be easier to Google BusyBox for that exlpanation.

You will need them if you are rooted. BusyBox is like a toolbox full of tools, only their binary tools. Some tasks require one tool, while another task requires a different set of tools. Without them a lot of root access tasks would not be possible.

I am looking for replacement phone on an auction site and the seller stated this:
"This phone was rooted prior to the reset and should still retain root once you get the phone set up and activated."

Does this mean the phone is usable or a scam?

Have the seller make a video of the phone in question actually working (a newspaper with the current date in the video as well).

If the phone is rooted, with just the stock ROM it's easy to activate.
If the phone is rooted with a custom Gingerbread ROM or above, have him put the Bumblebee Resurected ROM on the phone prior to your puchase (Stock and Froyo ROMs are the only ones with the much needed "Activate app" in them).

If the Phone is rooted, but no custom recovery, have him put a custom recovery on it before selling it (ZenGarden is the best for our phone).

Again: I would have him make a video with the paper in the background, and have him show all things it claims to have. Including: /menu/settings/about phone and menu/settings/about phone/status.
