HELP! My daughter wants an iPhone

With Christmas coming up - I have an issue... My 17 year old daughter wants the Iphone 4 from Virgin Mobile - I myself don't like Apple/Mac products simply because I don't feel you should have to have iTunes in order to get stuff for your devices and a few other reasons but anywho.... Besides the OUTRAGEOUS prices I just don't see a true reason for having to have an Iphone. I have been offering her the HTC Evo 4G, The Triumph or anything OTHER than that iPhone. She's not having it... I'm trying to figure out a way to convince her that an iPhone isn't all cracked up to what she thinks it is. She doesn't ask for ANYTHING & is VERY careful with her cell phones so I know it would be in pristine condition in years to come. But an iPhone??? Why do these kids "gotta have one"?

If you have any advice I'm all ears

Get her the iPhone. Nothing wrong with them, they are good phones. Just be warned that iPhones are targets for theft, especially among younger people.

My niece had her iPhone taken right out of her hands on the train. She was texting a friend at the neighboring university that she was almost there and at the stop before she was getting off this group of girls brushed past her, the last one grabbed the phone and jumped off the train before she realized what happened. The police did catch the girl a few weeks later and returned the phone, but it was still pretty traumatic.

Sadly, I think that there may be nothing you can do..... Just point out constantly the things that are better/easier to do with an Android... Unfortunately you won't really be able to do this until she has the iPhone and it's to late!

Sorry I'm if no use! :-(

OH GREAT... so I'll need to get her some iPhone "accessories" I see...

MENTAL NOTE: Get iPhone, mace, taser & some 9MM hollow point

That about sums up her Christmas list :D

SEE, I KNEW iPhones are pricey to own!!! LOL

Get her the phone with the stipulation that as soon as she is 18 - she gets the phone, account and all the accouterments on her own account. She is totally responsible for it.

You can still gift her money to help pay the phone bill if needed - but she is responsible for how the phone is used.

she's been in charge of her cell phone, bill and all that since her 17th birthday so she would be used to that. I'll never go back to the contract pit. If she doesn't pay, she doesn't have service ;)

Iphones are like Democrats, they always seem to win these days but nobody's quite sure why. I KID! :D

Truthfully, I have several personal reasons, many the same as you listed, for not being a fan. But they are a solid piece of hardware, no denying that. I think they have done a smash up job marketing to the young, among other demographics.

I'd say go for the iPhone. I played with one before and it's not a bad device as luna said. Pretty sure it comes with earphones as the 4S did.

Get her the iPhone if it makes her happy.

They are good products and no point in forcing her on Android just because you (we) prefer our Google OS. Freedom of choice goes both ways.

Just like Kix, iPhones are for kids! :p ;)
Like others have said, if it's what she wants, don't fight it. I assume she's had time to play with your phones? If so, she probably decided she liked the iPhone better anyway.

If my daughter wanted an iphony I'd buy her one. They are simply and ready to use right out of the box.

The iPhone 4 is 2 years old and should not be that expensive. If that is the phone that she wants, I would say let her get it. If she is going to be convinced to get an Android, it would most likely be one of her peers that will end up doing that rather than her father.

Well, The iPhone 4S she wants is listed at 649.00 on Virgin Mobile (she only wants to pay $35 a month) She said she is going to put in half if she has to because she wants the phone THAT bad BUT after hearing her talk to her friends she ONLY wants an iPhone "because they have TONS of cool cases". Kids these days...

I've often wondered to myself what makes the iphone so special aside from it being called the "iphone" and seeing everyone on television having one lol

In reality, we've got tons of cool cases for us android users as well. You should expose her to http://skinit.com which is a Site to make customizable cases/skins.

I've played with an iphone 4s that my buddy has and I just don't see what is so special due to I can't stand it. Android till I die :D

Just an over priced over hyped phone that isn't nearly as customized able.

My opinion, $649 for an iphone 4s is just crazy, not worth that much but that's my opinion :D, then again I've learned kids won't be satisfied until they've had an iphone and learn its not as good as android ;)

110% AGREE!

I like the "looks" of the iPhone, I played with the 3, 4 & 5 and I have to say... It isn't "all that". Sure it's cool but it doesn't wipe my butt or floss my teeth so I don't know where they come up with the outrageous prices. I was a Blackberry fan for a short time.. then I got turned out by Android & have been in love ever since. My daughter is a lot like me... If she has her heart set on something she's going to do whatever it takes to get it. I understand the whole "cool cases" thing but that price is NUTS! THANKFULLY she takes exceptional care of her electronics. She has "beds" for her phones & MP3 players that she sets them on. NO ONE is allowed to so much as look at her stuff because they might "break it" so to me that is a plus BUT I'm still stuck on the $649 price... I can buy a winter beater car for that kind of money.

BUT I'm going to go ahead and get her the damn thing for petes sake! Then I'll put her in Taekwondo for a few years so she can protect her iPhone ;)

BTW, it was Trix that were for kids. Kix were kid tested, mother approved. :p

They make iPhone cases that have tasers built onto them.

Not sure there's a case that can fire hollow-point ammunition yet, though. If they ever do make that...I'll (sadly) buy an iPhone.

Lol well at least you've got a daughter that protects her belongings like that instead of fast forwarding to 2 weeks later "hey mommy I need a new iphone, I let it go swimming" Lmao :p

I can understand about migrating from a bb, few years ago my first smart phone was the curve, came so close to trading it for an iphone 2, opted instead to trade it for the galaxy s Captivate. Sounded smarter to pay $150 less for a top of the line android and this was when the galaxy series was still rather new as well.

PURE GENIUS! Gosh... I'm finding that iPhones should have loan offices & I haven't even got the dang thing yet! I'm gonna have to sell my kid to get her a iPhone... but then that will mean she won't..... ahhh crap, this gives me a headache LOL

YEAH! She's not that kind of kid... at least I haven't allowed her to be. She pretty much learned that early on when she was given a cheapo MP3 player for "testing". She took care of it because I let her know that if she didn't, there would be no more electronics coming from me. Then her dad of all people used her PSP & it was stolen ... Talk about me becoming LIVID. But that's a whole nother show lol

iPhones are expensive. I'm not sure if you sell the kid if you will make enough to cover it. You might have to put her room up for rent, too. :D

give her the $$for the phone... tell her it is up to her if she wants to spend it on the iphone.. or an android phone and save some of the $$ for something else.

Hmmmm, you guys make some good points. If I cut her loose with the cash I'm gonna bet the farm she will come back with 7 foam fingers, 3 40 gallon cowboy hats, a rubber chicken while digging in a 10 pound bag of gummy worms. (the kid knows nothing about money & what is REALLY takes to get it). She's far from spoiled by 'far from' I mean, she just got her very own silverware to use at the dinner table (LMAO - JK, she still uses the plastic spork she got from school). But seriously, she's not a beggar or spoiled by any means... I'll get her the damn stinking iPhone for more than my car is worth but she's gonna have her name on the chore list for sure now. My chore list consist of tree cutting, stump removal, pouring concrete & that's just the 'fun' stuff. HA HA HA HA

She's my one & only kid so what the heck...
