Root [GUIDE][CTmod] Rooting the Prevail [SPH-M820] for Dummies (written by a dummy)

LOL........ Grinzzzzzz..... My finger on the F5 showed the site down, than up again !! CLICK, POST, WIN !!!!! ;)

I downloaded the first one on the list
"DOWNLOAD FF19 Gingerbread Rooted by Koumajutsu
FF19_ROOTED.zip"
So i just have to download the one that vce2005 told me, unplug the phone, close odin and delete the files i downloaded earlier? and then repeat the process again? Im sorry man, i haven't done this before and im not familiar with any of the terms... Thanks a lot for replying so fast.. I thought i was gonna have to wait a couple of hours...lol

Yep, give that a try. Just make sure when you select the files you take then from the new folder! Odin remembers the location you used last time you selected a file... You don't want to miss-match the files

OK guys.... on to chapter two....the phone rebooted, the superuser app is in place and odin says pass so i guess that's that... Thanks a lot guys... You're the best!!!
Edit:
The phone tells me there is a system update... im not supposed to update it, right?

All done now... installed the CTMOD and KoumaKernel and everything is running perfectly... at first i thought the wifi wasnt working but it was just the internet here...lol... So thanks to all of you guys out there who worked so hard on all of this. I gave the proper thanks and likes to every thread. Specially i would like to thank vce2005 and Lordvincent 90 who answered really fast when i wrote.... I LOVE MY PHONE NOW!!!!! Thanks u guys!!!

Glad you got it working :)
Also, you shouldn't see the system update notification after you installed ctmod

On a side note... this is the third person who has said something about the updated ff19 image causing problems..... (first two via pm) I'm going to DL it tonight and see if i have a similar experience. If so i will be changing the instructions back to fe16 until it gets sorted out

Im sorry.. i forgot to say that after i installed the kernel and the CTmod it didnt give me any more notifications.... the one thing that i notice is that my phone's signal is less than before... could it be because of that same update? cause when i went to the boost store to get it activated, the guy there told me that the signal was better now because they were using the at&t antennas now and after he updated it, the signal was indeed much better... but now is back to what it was.... Not complaining though, just asking if there is way to fix that... if not then its ok, still love the hell out of my phone now...lol

You don't actually have "less service"... the ROM just interprets the signal differently... if you go to settings>about phone> status and look at signal strength, I bet its similar to the previous reading. (Note -65= perfect service.... -120=no service)

The bars are just a representation of the signal strength.
(If that makes sense)

oh... ok... lol.. got it.. and really dude thanks for all the help! the phone is working super fine man.... i will recomend the site to all my friends. :D

i think i have it but on my kouma settings i don't know where to put my swap file here is what i did everything is running fine

Glad you got it all working. As for the swap you have to make a folder and then direct it with the kouma mod to that folder. Now what works better is useing the kouma partitioning tool and make a 4th partition for the swap. It works better in a partion vs a folder. Also why did you want to use i-parted instead of the kouma tool? The kouma tool allows you to make as many partitions as needed. Just asking.

i was out of service range over the week end the reasion i could not use the .apk is because i could not get it to install i put in the system folder i thought i was supposed to get a icon in my application folder i made two swaps one in /data/swap and data/app you say a fourth partition works much better my highest antutu benchmark is 2230 thank you for all this help

Nothing wrong with that! As long as it is working for you, that is what counts!

cwhatever could you please show me the link or instructions for sdparted.apk you made with the input of kouma and wet i am ready to try a fourth partition thanks in advance

Well it would appear that I'm not going to be able to test the image myself... it seems that my USB port is fried.... and my prevail is officially on life support... I have a second prevail with a non functional screen... and I'm currently using it to charge my batteries so its still alive for now... but it looks like I may be needing a new phone soon.... :(

Yes I will get it up for you by tomorrow night, no problem!

If you're already running data mode, there are some additional steps to take... just running the app will probably result in an error regarding the partitions being in use (because they're being used for your data ;) )

So...
1. Make a backup! (Always make a backup ;) )
2. Factory reset (this switches back to default mode...)
3. flash this zip http://db.tt/AriQasB4 in cwm to install the sdparted app as a system app
4. Transfer contents of sdcard to pc (because this process will wipe it)
5. Boot system normally
6. Open sdparter app (should be in app drawer)
You will see the screen with sliders
screenshot-1352940797654.png

7. Move the top slider to the left ( this will reduce the size of the fat (main) partition and allow for a 4th one to be created
screenshot-1352940812447.png

8. Choose swap for the 4th partition by selecting the pulldown
screenshot-1352940828118.png

9. Move the 4th slider to the desired swap partition size
10. Once you have the desired size for both ext4 partitions AND the swap partition, move the fat (top) slider to the 'max' (whatever isn't being used by the other three partitions)
11. Press partition
12. Once it finishes, transfer your files back to sdcard then reboot into recovery and restore your backup.

It will take a while as it rebuilds the dalvik cache and once it fully boots, go into koumamod and direct swap to mmcblk0p4 (the newly created swap partition)

13. ????
14. profit

Thank you cwhatever for the hard work. i have beem working at this about 12hrs myself. i did get the four partitions on my 32gb card my wifi does work got all my apps reinstalled. i am testing everything now so far so good. i had to take all of my original patririons off made one only i could not get the sdparter from your drop box to work i just installed the sdparter.apk fron /system when i set up the four partitions the first ext is the only one i formated had to leave 3 & 4 with vfat (fat32) after sdparted said they were finished i went back to sdparted and formatted the last two to ext4 and swap respectivly i went to kouma settings and put it to ssm and rebooted i did have to do this at least 6 times to get the partitions to stick i want to know if i should check the transpose or not and if i did would i loose my apps or icons i did also go back and mount and format my sd-ext though as soon as i finished partitioning this was not very easy but it seens to be very stable thanks again for your help

Glad I can help and Lordvincent helped too and kouma so they need the thanks too!!! As for the transpose I did not and if you make a cwm backup after you get something working you can then try something and if it messes up just restore back and try something different and if it works backup again. I used to install an app and play with it and then backup if was good and restore back if no good, I have right now prolly 800 backups from experimenting. So always BACKUP WHEN SOMETHING WORKS GOOD!!! Glad we all can help and feel free to ask when need help!

So,I just wanted to know,is this normal? For the phone to do this? Its been over an hour, that picture is a bit old. I followed all the instructions. The phone is still displaying the downloading screen. What should I do?

The picture is unreadable... but no it isn't normal for it to take an hour... what is it stuck on? (What does it say in the box above the yellow com number?)

Did you see the words 'arm boot' go by? In my experience amms and arm boot are the 'Scary Ones' if it fudges the arm boot you end up with a paperweight... :(

But I think its stuck on the kernel. (Boot.img) which is slightly less scary... did you use the ff19 image? If so, would you try the fe16 image and see if you get the same results.
