Root [CDMA] Need to return to stock...I think

I'm having some non-ROM related issues with my phone and plan to make use of my insurance by taking the phone into Sprint for servicing. My has been freezing up lately, and has been giving me issues with phantom touches. I've tried everything from running a superwipe to flashing a new ROM, and nothing seems to help. I fear the touchscreen may be going out.

How can I return to stock, including regaining s-on? Should I not even worry about returning it to stock? Any other suggestions would help too.

Thanks!
Steve

Sorry everyone! I should know better. I'm running MeanROM ICS v2.6 now, and have switched between others thinking it was the ROM, but issues still occur. When it started, I was running MeanROM v4.5 (GB-base). I'm s-off and on 1.5 hboot.

Hey Steve! It should be pretty simple if you want to return to stock. Just run whatever ruu you want (GB or ICS) to return to fully stock and unrooted.

If you want to go back to s-on just use fastboot and type fastboot oem writesecureflag 3

That should be it. RUU will return you to stock, then you can go s-on again.

ETA:
Here is the ICS (2.89) RUU

Also from what I have heard and read, Sprint doesn't really care if it rooted. I should have saved the link, but someone posted their official policy on handling rooted devices and basically it says that the employees are to lecture on the dangers of rooting but they can't refuse to repair or replace the phone. I'll see if i can find it again.

Thanks Brian! So in regards to the Sprint techs, will it matter if I'm running an aftermarket ROM, or should I at least run the RUU and keep s-off?

I don't think it really matters. It might be less hassle if you run the RUU. I would leave s-off though. Then you can root again very easily. You can flash 4ext through the bootloader with a PG86IMG file. I have one if you need it, just PM me when you need it. Then just flash a rom again. You won't even need the computer.

Found the sprint policy: Sprint Policy on Rooted Devices

And here is a funny story about a guy who took his rooted phone in for repairs: Funny Story

If they are going to have to test the phone after doing repairs, I would say it's probably better to go back to stock. They probably won't even notice that it is s-off.

Just make a nandroid backup before you run the RUU. Then when you get your phone back you can flash 4ext recovery (if that's what you use) and restore your phone right back to how it was.

they prolly wont notice s-off,and legitimate test phones are shipped that way,so s-off,tho rare, does not mean that you modified it. it could well have shipped that way :) just running a stock ruu should be sufficient to jump thru sprints hoops.

also i wanted to make sure its well understood, make sure you do not write secureflag 3 until after youve run an ruu. this is very important!

if youre on an unsigned hboot(like jp bear, revolutionary,or even a factory eng hboot),the processor will freak out(<-technical term :D) and put itself into a "do not boot" mode requiring linux and special programs or jtag to fix(read: real hard core soft brick, potential hard brick)

turbo sorry to hear youre having issues. hopefully they get resolved quickly :)

Ran the RUU and so far no issues like I was having earlier. WTH! Every single ROM I tried I kept having the same issue. Am I missing something? I wasn't running any other kernel other than what was on the ROM I downloaded.

Hmm that's weird. There have been a lot of people talking about screen problems lately. Lol, so now its working.... What hboot and rom were you on before the ruu?

brian,he said in post #2 1.5 hboot.

when you were flashing roms to trouble shoot, did you per chance try any GB roms? or all ICS?

when the rezound first started gettig ICS leaks, and we were modifying them them to work with the current GB firmware,i never did feel they ran quite right. this is basically the same scenario as the 3d and the roms requiring hboot 1.5 or 1.4(tho i dont understand why devs didnt update the base when the official rom came out )

there are some critical mount points that have changed location in ICS,and without shufling things around in the rom to match, the phone will not boot with GB firmware- youll get bootloops or immediate, constant reboots.

my suggestion would be go ahead and add recovery and superuser so you dont go nuts ;) then run stock for a few days and make sure youre troubles are gone. if they are, then try roms that are based on the official update, and require the new firmware(hboot 1.58).

my guess is that now that youre on updated firmware youll be good to go,as long as you use the appropriate roms :)

When the problem first started, I was running MeanROM v4.5. I never had issues when I used it before, and actually, was okay up until a few days in. When the issues started, I switched to SOS M for a day...problems still existed. Then I tried PA for a day...issue still there. Before running the RUU I had switched to MeanROM ICS v2.6. Everytime I switched ROMs, I ran a superwipe thinking this would help, but nope. So far the phone is running perfect. On hboot 1.58, essentially factory with the exception I'm still s-off.

Weird!

Well as Scotty mentioned, run it for a few days, then try flashing ROMS based on HBoot 1.58 and see what happens, you should be fine, but we wont know until you try. Keep us posted on your end. ;)

By the way, what recovery are you using ??

Will do. Using 4Ext as my recovery.

Well, my issue started up again on Saturday evening, and happened again throughout Sunday and today. I took my phone into Sprint about 2 hours ago and just picked it up. They went ahead and replaced the screen and ran a test on it. So far no issues, but gonna give it a few more days before re-rooting. They said nothing about it being previously rooted, so no issues there. At least I still have the same phone, so rooting should be simple. I have a strong feeling my issues with the phone were directly caused by the screen and not any of the ROMs I used.

it would prolly provide me some comfort to know there was a phyiscal issue, rather than random wierdness with software, since that can be hard to figure out!

hopefully that fixed it for you... since youre still s-off,rerooting is as easy as flashing a recovery in hboot. then flash superuser, flash a rom,or restore a backup!

looking forward to hearing how it goes.

Speaking of which, here is 4ext recovery as a PG86IMG.zip that you can flash through hboot! https://dl.dropbox.com/u/100923173/4extPG86IMG.zip

Brian, do you have a superuser .zip file? I can re-download SuperSU Pro after I load a new ROM.

I have v. 96 I believe they are on .98 now... I need to download and update that in my drop box. http://db.tt/t3s2wUif

Just fyi you can always find the latest version here as well: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053

Just realized you asked for super user not supersu. Basically the same thing. I don't have one for super user but now I'm going to add that to my list of projects! :)

Down at the bottom of the first post!

haha...I just found it myself. I was on there and downloaded it. Thanks for posting though. Gonna wait until my battery reaches a full charge, then I'm gonna re-root. Talk about feeling like I'm on the other side of the tracks.
