Orange /T mobile use this SN to dowload the update

I`m with T-Mobile, but must be lucky enough to have an unbranded ROM, as the upgrade went fine for me (see other thread). Are there no apps (like the Nokia ones) that can change the handset ID on Android? Its so much better having an unbranded ROM (like I upgraded to on my '3' branded N95).

Grr. So annoyed that I have to wait for Orange to mark their territory by urinating all over the firmware with their soon to be obsolete branding.

Grumble grumble

LOL - that quote made me laugh.. Im leaving mine (Im on Orange) rooted and running custom ROM, in a few days the devs will have another flavour out to use ;)

I did a full wipe before flashing from 1.5.1 to 2.2 which got rid of any lag that was present on my first attempt where I updated straight over the top. Can't wait till 2.3 now which hopefully will have s new people widget that is full screen. Rooting and using MoDaCo's custom ROMs is the way forward. From what I gather the official update will make it harder to root your phone if you should decide you want to after you install it.

OK. Well someone from email support replied by leaving me a voicemail. He said basically that Orange has to review firmware updates to check it is compatible with orange software (whatever that means). He can neither confirm nor deny whether it is being reviewed as he has been given no information, and he was very sorry but I would just have to check the website regularly to see if it had been released.

Amazing how two different support staff from the same company can give such differing responses.

I didn't want to root my phone if I didn't have to. I'm just over a week into an 18 month contract - the most expensive one I've ever had because I wanted this phone - and I really would rather not risk invalidating the warantee. But if I get to the weekend and Orange have not either released the update or given a firm and consistent indication of when/if they're going to get round to it, then I'm just going to have to take the plunge.

I spoke to Orange today, they told me HTC havent submitted the new update to them yet, so they haven't started there amendments yet, they said maybe it'll be out in a couple of weeks. The customer services women doesn't know where it would be posted when it arrives.
Orange should brief there operators to at least get there bull shit to syncronize with each other.

I spoke with orange aswell today. UK time about 2pm. the person I spoke said I had to get the rom update from HTC as its their responsibility to provide the update. I told orange what htc said so the CSR rang round a bunch of different departments and said no one has a clue, her manager is contacting HTC directly to get a update and they are going to ring other departments and get back to me tomorrow.

Shame no one at orange talks to each other
At least HTC are consistant.

so annoying that this is just because of a branded handset. like so many other people have said if i want a phone with silly orange software i'll install it myself.

Does anyone actually know exactly what differences a branded version has to the unbranded (apart from the silly logos an bookmarks and stuff like that?)

Thats pretty much it. Startup logo. Bookmarks. Homepage. Orange numbers. Possibly Orange specific apps.

I think I read somewhere there was one orange app but the books marks were all deleted soon after i turned the phone on and as for the start up logos.... you can change them yourself just just need to edit the file (i havent tried this yet so not sure if it works but i have the path somewhere) i;ll post it soon as i find it again

Neg on that. No installed apps other than the stock HTC ones. A few Orangeworld bookmarks (e.g. "Your Account"), the brief splash screen during bootup and the small square logo on the back cover.

so has anyone tried this yet?

if you edit the orange gif does the startup logo actually change?

:mad:FOLLOW UP

Ive just have a call back from orange, the csr who has spoken with HTC and with her data team and her manager who has been sending loads of email-

they said they dont know when they'll release the ROM update - as yet orange havent been given the rom update to play with.

I asked for a email to confirm what i was told and will post it when I've got it. This is such a pain. i might have to just root it and add a custom cupcake.

Orange Stock - HTC Hero - Graphite

After reading all the posts on the Hero. I came to the conclusion Orange Suck Balls and I am rooting my phone.

I did this last night followed the 2 Videos on the unlockr.com :

How to root your HTC Hero & How to load a custom ROM

10 Minutes later I have now have a Hero that runs like a ROCKET !!!!!

All Orange users out there. This is the way forward. I am new to Android after using the Symbian S60 on the Nokias for the past few years.

I don't see the point in waiting for Orange to stick their Branding all over the ROM. You will not see any benefits from the Orange ROM.

Orange Gone - Now Rooted - MoDaCo Custom ROM = Lightning Fast

Interesting... I bought a HTC Hero with an Orange contract from CarPhone Warehouse and the only branding I can find is it says "Orange" on the screen which comes up before the dot-to-dot unlock page...?

J.

i have a orange contract from carphone warehouse and have got no branding whats so ever.
lucky me
i did get mine the day after release say though, so probably hadnt been branded....... yet.

I could also download the update from HTC with the phones serial number, but since I don't have any physical windows machines and I can't get the phone to work under virtualbox I've got to wait until the weekend when I can borrow one :(

Why oh why did htc make it require a windows box. *Sigh* Everything else (SDK) works on linux and mac...

we are lucky gettin out phones from carphone warehouse, all these peeps on here are havin a mare with there branded handsets.

Perhaps we should all independently ring Orange/Tmobile sales and pretend we're considering a Hero on their most expensive 24 month contract - but ask for a cast-iron assurance that the software update will be released within days. When it's not forthcoming say something along the lines of "OK, thanks for your help. I'm going to get an iPhone instead". ;-)

its depends what you are after, unbranded handset from a third party or a good deal direct from operator. i got mine direct from tmob and the phone is fine apart from it is a tiny bit slow with its lag, but once the ROM is out the phone will be perfect. i can't complain too much to tmobile as they give me 50% off line rental as it is lol.

Right, that's it, I'm rooting and custom Rom installing. Can someone just confirm either way whether I'll loose text messages etc. when I do. Ta

Except that they'll (very likely) refuse to honour the warranty if you use a non-approved update. Not a big deal for some, but a major concern for others.

Another point to be aware of is that the custom ROMs come complete with some very powerful tools. Coupled with root access it's very easy to render your handset completely FUBAR if you're careless/overly curious.
