Camera shutter sound on Galaxy S3

I read online it's impossible to turn off the shutter sound on the Galaxy S3 unless you're rooted. Supposedly due to some public places like government buildings forbidding pictures to be taken. True?

True. But I think there are some variants of the phone that allow it to be turned off. Verizon I know you cant turn it off. I am rooted so I just renamed to sound files to .bak.

some models/carriers have it as an option right in the camera settings, some can be silent simply by silenting the phone, some need root to change/delete the sound file

I'm a Verizon customer and am not rooted. There's an .apk I've downloaded and have been using that disables the shutter sound. Search the net for something called "Enforced Stream Silencer".

I've not noticed any ill effects of installing or using this program, but use at your own risk.

Good luck.

Someone told me once it was law in the US to have camera phones making that shutter noise for provacy reasons. Whether thats true or not I don't know.

The silent shutter feature was available on my EVO 4G a year and a half ago, but that was w/ Gingerbread.

I use the AT&T version of the SIII and it has always had the option to turn off the shutter sound.
Must be a carrier thing or a version thing i guess????

There are laws in many places that forbid you to take pictures with a phone's camera without a shutter sound. This is to protect the privacy of the person being (secretly) photographed. Check your local laws on that :)

Similar situation with my Galaxy S2, which is unrooted.

In TouchWiz there was no option anywhere to turn off the camera sound. It even remained on on silent mode.

I recently installed GoLauncher, just for a little fun and to have yet more choices in themes, etc.
I found yesterday that when my phone is in silent mode, in GoLauncher, the camera is silenced. Bonus!

I have an unrooted Razr Maxx, the stock camera has the option to turn the shutter sound off.

This phone's not a year old yet, so i don't know about laws regarding this.

On the global you can just turn volume down but trust me here..... put your thumb over the speaker, you hardly hear a thing! :)

I keep seeing this in forums, but I have yet to see primary evidence that this is nothing more than a desire by some lawmakers in some countries. H.R. 414 in the US was proposed in '09 that would require a camera phone to make a sound, but it did not pass.

I could only find this so far: audio - Jurisdictions where camera shutter sound is mandated by law - Android Enthusiasts

I have a non-rooted Verizon S3; if I put the sound on Mute (from the drop-down notification bar), it mutes the shutter sound.

To anyone saying you have to have a sound by law....

Show me the law. I call BS. The US supreme court has already ruled, many times, that in a public place, you have no expectation of privacy when it comes to photography. I know this to be fact because I was actually sued by a person that ended up in a DVD I produced and sold. He lost. And spent a lot of money doing it.

Why doesn't it beep or make noise if you are in video mode and filming?

And on Verizon, and I imagine all others, you can silence the phone and take a picture with no shutter sound.

All of my digital cameras have the option to silence the shutter sound. My SLR's have the option to make a sound or not, along with the actual noise it makes. My kids dumb phone has the option to silence the shutter. So does his Nintendo DS. Does your "law" only apply to smart phones?

I may be the only Cricket user, so I'll just throw in that the Cricket GS3 doesn't have a button, but with the volume turned down there is no shutter sound.
