Orange /T mobile use this SN to dowload the update

From past experience CPW only supply 'stock' handsets, at least to O2 and Orange customers. All my previous contract phones through them were completely unbranded.
Sorry, am new to this; by 'stock' do you mean as delivered from the factory by HTC? If that's the case, you'd expect this ROM update to work (which would explain why the serial number allows the download of the ROM)?

I can't vouch for the Hero as I upgraded my contract via Orange directly this time, but every handset from CPW I've owned prior to this (way back to my Sony Z5) has been unbranded.

I was under the impression that owners with CPW-supplied handsets had been able to install the generic update. I think hoppy1986 managed it?

Ah, the sony Z5 - what an amazing handset that was. I thought I was the man when I had that!

Yup, that jog-wheel still hasn't been bettered imho and the browser was a revelation - full HTML rendering back when WAP was bleeding-edge!

I still have mine, and might even see if it works with these new-fangled SIMs we're using nowadays. Nostalgia FTW! :D

yea your spot on, i did the official update on tuesday.

The ROM upgrade works fine on my Orange phone...BUT I got my upgrade from Carphone Warehouse in the UK and I believe they unlock/unbrand all their phones.

The Wifi connectivity is still awful...Drops connection all the time and YouTube works about 20% of the time. Pretty Rubbish for a 'state of the art' handset.

I got my Orange Hero from CPW but its fully branded and unable to install the firmware, so I'm not sure if it was just the first batch that was unlocked.

try using an app called wifilock. i believe that the wifi radio turns of when the phone is in standy or idle.

this app makes it on all the time, unless turned of by widget

Strange - this has to be router-dependent as I've always had a rock solid connection with my old Linksys WRT54G

Sony Z7 owner myself, was a cracker!

Fully branded locked and laggy Orange Hero owner now!

In terms of Wi-Fi, always had a good connection at home but sometimes just would simply not do anything ( webpage unavailable errors ) I changed my security from WPA2 to WEP and now seems to work great...

Is there a way to install the modaco rom without technically 'rooting' the phone? I have like to be able to keep my warranty intact if at all possible...

You have to root the phone to put a ROM on.

You could just restore it back though and no-one would ever know.
