Apple again

I didn't buy a $500 Android phone and a $1000 Android tablet because I was poor. I chose them because they were best in class, which includes using Linux.

My view is most people buy Andrpid tablets because they are less costly than the iPad in many cases.
color.

I hate this theory.

I could own a plethora of apple devices if I want. I don't because I think they're crap, not because how much is in my wallet.

Cricket and Wal-Mart sell iPhones now. They lost their snob appeal, which is really all that they had going for them. Doubt Jobs would have allowed that to happen.

My friend recently bought an iPhone....barely six months and the battery keeps draining and the phone keeps hanging. Is this the case with all iPhones or maybe this piece has a defect?

iPhones are normally very good as a rule, it could be defective. Maybe something messed up with the software and is causing instability and draining the battery. It's not jailbroken is it? Could try resetting it to defaults.

And you think it is odd that a company would want to create their own products rather than rely upon the competition? Not surprising and who knows, it might have worked better than Google's efforts.

As for Apple licensing iOS, we do not know what Apple will do sans Steve Jobs. Most certainly, SJ would never allow it. Perhaps yes, probably no, but not definitely no.

Apple tried licensing out their operating systems before, years ago. That was one of the first things that SJ stopped when he came back to Apple. It wasn't good. They're extremely unlikely to do it again.

An unlocked non-carrier 16GB iPhone 5 from Wal*Mart is still $650 bucks. If you get a locked heavily subsidised one on a two year plan, that's a bit different.

Here in China the iPhone very much carries a snob value, as do all Apple products. The same 16GB iPhone 5 here is equivalent of a whopping $850 USD, and is NOT available subsidised at all. I'm certain that Apple wants to keep it that way, to maintain the perceived cachet, prestige and exclusivity. Like most designer luxury brands do here. Of couse that's why there's so many iPhone replicas and knock-offs, just like with Rolex watches and Gucci handbags.

The 16GB iPhone 5 in the UK is actually free, on a 45 GBP a month two year plan with Tesco Mobile. Which is a supermarket MVNO. I'm quite sure that Tesco has zero snob appeal.

SJ is dead and buried and TC is the man in charge. No telling what he might allow to happen if times get tight. I also doubt it will happen, but one never knows.

Not really.

Now, people who could not afford to be iSnobs can afford to be snobs at a lower monthly cost. If anything, the iPhone at Cricket (and Virgin Mobile as well) brings more potential Fanboys and iSnobs into the fold.

That said, most will not become snobs or idiots or forum posters and they will simply enjoy their phone.

Note that the S3 is at Cricket and it is costly compared to other carriers. So if anything, apparently, only the rich can afford Cricket and VM due to the cost of the device(s).

The problem with Apple stock is that it had an insane multiple compared to other tech companies. Because they were dominating the phone sector, and then the tablet sector, and had no effective competition. But that isn't true anymore, so while their sales and profit keep expanding, it's not at a rate that suggests dominance anymore, and so their multiple is coming back down to earth. Also the level of innovation in the last few iterations just isn't the same as it was in the first couple, and that is also weighing in people's minds.

You are not most people and my theory still stands. Lots of people buy cheap tablets because they cannot afford a more expensive tablet. Many likely order a China made POS rather than go to a retailer and buy one of those 1,000.00 tablets.

Google's strategy. Seems to be working.
Android Is Popular Because It's Cheap, Not Because It's Good

It could also lead to a walled garden approach, so I'm a tad leery of all services. What if Android doesn't have what I want/need and I can't get it?

Probably more on the nerd end here.

I agree with much of what the article says. Except I would suggest Android devices can be very, very good. I would go with an iPhone if the screen were larger, however and off contract because tech changes greatly in a few years.

You will see lots of great phones coming to the cheap seats. I am not sure how many people can afford to pay for an iPhone or an S3 upfront these days. If they have bad credit and they want an iPhone, they go Cricket or VM and pay for it upfront.

Many people using VM/Boost/Cricket likely do so because they are off contract and many of these people likely have credit issues that prevent them from an ATT/Verizon/Sprint contract.

You can say what you want, but I think price is important and one of the reasons Android is so popular is you can buy one on the cheap or perhaps get one for free with a contract. Android appeals to a certain percentage of the population because they want a cool phone. they cant afford an iPhone so they go to the next best device: something Android.

Look, people really need a little more perspective. Look at the numbers.

Apple Computer reported the biggest revenue quarter in in the history of business and financial reporting. Apple Computer reported the fourth most profitable quarter ever posted by any company, ever. Apple reported the most revenue in a quarter ever and the fourth most profitable quarter.

Apple is exactly where many other corporations want to be.

Apple is wildly successful and some do not like it. Apple has all the cash and that makes it easy to launch and promote new product,s sue infringers, buy the competition and run wild.

How can a company with the fourth most profitable quarter ever and the most revenue ever, crash and burn? Some people here are predicting the end of Apple because of slow stock performance and they are simply under educated about the stock market. Look at the numbers.

My theory is Apple did not do what was expected and Wall Street does not like it. When you look at what Apple has done, however, the news is not that bad.

Again, Apple reported the biggest revenue quarter in the history of business! And this is somehow a bad thing?

This is exactly what I was going to point out. The problem is really with the stock market, not Apple. Just because a company doesn't make as much profit as hoped, that company is deserted by investors who realize they will lose money if they buy shares now and they drop in value. Apple is making profit! And as pointed out, record sales.

I agree with pretty much everything you have said so far but I do take issue with this statement:

Android appeals to a certain percentage of the population because they want a cool phone. they cant afford an iPhone so they go to the next best device: something Android.

I'm sorry this is the old argument that the iPhone is the better, cooler device and the reason people buy android is because they can't afford an iPhone, and it is wrong.

To call android "the next best device" is so out of date. The iPhone doesn't even have a 720p display or quad core CPU like the last generation android phones (such as the One X and the Galaxy SIII), and android devices are now coming out with quad core processors and 1080p displays with 440ppi pixel densities or higher. How can any of these be considered a second choice device to an iPhone? Apple are no longer leading the field. They are following behind the technological advances made by android phone manufacturers.

It doesn't have to be sales that will make the stock market diss Apple.
Someone, committee or whoever decides to promote what to invest in just might not like the way the new CEO is handling the business, the rumors of a cheaper Iphone and Ipad might devalue stock and turn investors off. Anything that departs from the behavior that made Apple stock soar, will make it suspect.

I agree with this.

By the same token, dominant companies have crashed and burned throughout history.

American car makers. IBM. Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.

No one stays top dog forever, it seems.

The reasons why often come in retrospect.

Apple's financial dominance may end in 5 years or 50.

But I do think that it will end, and I doubt it will be for any of the reasons that we can predict today, even if it's already started.

Endings are like that, I think.

Actually IBM is a notable exception.

Look at their history. IBM was a company ahead of its time when it began in the 1880s. They got their big break when the US government chose their tabulating machines to keep track of the 1890 census.

We think of IBM as the big computer company, but in fact IBM was late to that game. When the IBM PC was introduced in 1981, IBM had been a computer company for less than a third of its lifetime.

When you look closely, it's a wonder that IBM is still in the game at all. By all rights IBM should be as obsolete as whale bone corsets and spats.

Apple has its own comeback stories. The ///, Apple's first business machine, was a failure. The Lisa, which was supposed to be Apple's crowning achievement, totally bombed. It was pretty much by accident that Apple had the Macintosh to save their bacon; it wasn't a first line product. And there's little doubt that the decision to remake their product line into being fashion accessories first (the IMac was the first crack at that market) was Apple's saving grace.

Apple may have yet another rabbit in its hat. Or it might not. Time will tell. One thing that should be clear by now is that Apple is not some kind of deity. Apple is far from infallible. It's not a sure thing. I think that myth is at the center of a lot of friction about Apple. Let's at least agree that it's only a myth.

By patenting features already available on Android? Not that innovative but I can understand Apple's use of propaganda.

Yeah, it's interesting to see how the old "robber baron" railroad companies have changed with mergers and acquisitions (and consent decrees) over the years. It's a shame that most Americans know what Amtrak is, but don't realize that the freight carrying railroads are still profitable, and typically own and maintain the tracks that most folks don't even think about.

The golden age of railroads may be past, but one thing that we can all learn from their rise and fall is that carrying passengers never has been, and probably never will be profitable. The railroads and the airlines have always been reliant on carrying goods to keep them in the black. And I'll bet that the promised new space tourism projects will end up converting to primarily lifting gear into low earth orbit, or go out of business altogether.

I saw something interesting in last night's news. It was a story about how smart phones are using up more network bandwidth than tablets or computers. It said that by next year, phone users will see their cellular carriers' wireless data networks slow to a crawl as demand exceeds the carriers' ability to provide it profitably.

If we learn from the fates of previous common carriers (yes, transportation is the original way to communicate over distance), it's a safe bet that the rules of supply and demand will have cellular carriers pricing their data services at levels that casual users can't afford, and offering multiple service levels just like Airlines have First Class, Business Class and Coach.

It will be interesting to see how the boutique phone owners cope with this.

They will scream and yell. MY DATA!!!!
What bugs me is low data users like me suffer because of pigs.

I like railroads. I worked for a shipping company and got familiar with the freight lines.
