Root GUIDE: From stock 1.5 to the latest root 2.1

Can some help me.
I installed this with the SDK. The phone is OK, everytime I try and connect the phone to my PC (W7) I get a blue screen right away. I replaced the USB driver from SDK like I was told to in instructions and I am not sure what's causing this.
Thanks,
J

So I am trying to root my Eris (have previously installed the unrooted 2.1), and I've run into a snag that I haven't seen anyone else having. Basically, everything seems to be going fine until it checks the PB00IMG, at which point it says "Main version is older! Update Failed!" and then gives me the option to boot normally. That's it. I can't figure out what the deal is, but the phone will not load the rooted img.

Thoughts?

EDIT: Just realized that this is because I installed the original unrooted 2.1. Is there any workaround for this issue at all? Kind of sucky...

nope, not until someone roots a newer version

Hopefully root for 2.1 leakers will be here soon. On the 20th this guy who may have insight as to how to root our phones will be back from vacation. No guarantees, though.

so.. idk if i did this right or not... i used the batch file and i put into the right directory and stuff. i ran number one, and it installed the rooted fw.. then my phone started to boot, but got stuck at the Verizon wireless screen for quite a bit... this next part i think was my problem.. i went and continued the batch file by going back to the menu and hitting 2. it did its thing and instead of going into a recovery mode, it just brought up a screen with the android and a triangle with a ! in it... help please and thanks? sorry i new to this rooting thing. i hack ipod touches and stuff.. which... is a ton easier than this for some stupid reason.. XP

Edit: i got it to work. i'm now rooted. THANKS GUYS!! next for me is some themes and what not... gotta read up on that.

Hi there! I've gone through the directions (thanks for posting) but my phone is now stuck at the verizon/htc brilliantly quiet screen. It keeps looping and my phone will not boot correctly. I thought I did every step correctly. Do you know of a fix for this?

Thanks!

well this thread seems to be the "go-to" place for help so here i go - i used the automatic scripts, and here's my loadout:
-rooted
-recovery partition
-flashed the eris21official (downloaded and installed on 3/28/10)
-flashed live wallpapers
-installed nexus gallery
INSTALLED(Downloads):
Touiteur
Facebook for Android
Trapster
Astro file manager
johnson bubble level
Bloo - facebook
ebay
foursquare
goggles
usaa mobile
google maps
personal assistant
Texts From Last night
Slacker Radio
Google Voice
Movies
Qwiklist Voice
Photobucket mobile
lockbot free
mvideoplayer
compass
my verizon
dolphin browser
shazam
places directory
shopsavvy
ultra notes
HTC battery widget
craigsphone

the bugs i've encountered:
1) sometimes, when i make a call, it quickly vibrates and there is no sound from the headset or speaker. same for when i receive a call. this first happened a day after flashing and then again like 3-4 days later. how i fix it is turning it off and back on.
1.5) after longer use i sometimes get complete unresponsiveness when a call comes in...it will just ring and ring and i can't answer or do anything...pulling the battery to fix this.
2) when i 'back' out of google voice to the home screen, it takes me right back into google voice, i press back again and it stays out of it. can't "fix" this it just happens no matter what.
3) this rom does have a lot of SenseUI in it...so the keyboard is there as well. i know that 2.1 is supposed to support voice-to-text input in all text fields, right?? i can't figure out how to use it.
4) i flashed Live Wallpapers but i don't see an app for it or a place in settings for them...are they only able to be used with Home? instead of Sense? when i use Moov and select "wallpapers" it comes up with a selection screen for which app i want to use and gives Live Wallpapers as a choice.
5) the Nexus gallery is extremely buggy. if i introduce a couple hundred new images (by renaming a folder from being "hidden" with a period) it just sits as loading...i waited for about 10 minutes. also if i turn the eris sideways, when it adjusts, it's way out of wack with many instances of the image squished and striped with missing lines..just not viewable, once i turn it back it goes back to normal. if there's a way to 'completely' remove this (since it had to be flashed) it may be something to take a look at. (would still like to use it if it worked)

so the first two i'm betting have to do with the Google Voice app. and the rest are just annoyances...of course with everything else working - when you find something that doesn't it's what you focus on.

Still love the autoscript, and cooked ROM, thank you. and thanks for your help in advance. Jason

flash the rom again...same thing happened to me the first time...think i actually flashed a couple times - each time doing the "factory data" whatever clear and devclik or whatever clear. hah

if that doesn't work...do an md5 check on the zip file with it on the card...if not correct, redownload - place on card - check again - then flash again.

Hey guys, so i'm still having trouble with the recovery step. I know its probably very, very simple to input these commands, but is there anyway that someone can either show me screen shots of how to do this, or give me like the "recovery for dumpies how to".

Here's where I am so far, i've download the recoveryimg file, and i've moved it to my android sdk. now I know i have to do the command prompts. anytime i open a c:\ command prompt and attempt to type in these commands; it comes up the error "is not recognized as a internal or external command".

Any kind of help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Need help doing the recovery part, I don't know how to go to the 'tools' part through command prompt.

rooting also reset all my stuff so i'm pretty unsettled about it..

Are you trying to piss the devs off even more? Are you f'in serious? Your upset about your settings being reset? You didnt see anywhere that said that would happen and to make backups? I was going to help you with your problem, but with that last statement...have fun.

PS. Yes I know Im a dick but I know how to read. Just like you should have before posting this.

Has anyone experienced this problem: I followed all of the steps with no issues and have 2.1 up and running but i can't make or receive calls... getting the typical Verizon "your phone is not authenticated." I have tried *228 several times but still no luck. Please help...

Which ROM are you using? Have you tried to re-flash the ROM, and making sure you wipe davik and data as well before doing that?

I am using the eris21official-root.zip. I did clear davik and data before applying the ROM. I have reverted back to 1.5 and am still having the same problem on the 1.5 ROM. I followed these instructions: http://androidforums.com/all-things...roms-kitchen-radios-updated-04-09-2010-a.html

Ok... i called Verizon (dail #8899) from the handset and told them I did an update. They had to push some security setting out to the phone and now things are working great!

I love 2.1!!!!

So I ran the extras batch file, and installed everything on there, but for whatever reason live wallpapers do not work in home or the nexus launcher. Any reason why?
By the way, everything else is awesome! Thanks!:)

EDIT: I forgot to add, the live wallpapers picker launches but once I select a wallpaper it immediately force closes and says:
The application Live Wallpaper Picker (process android.process.acore) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.

Did you try this for all wall papers? I have read some will FC, but not all. I am running lwp for 18 hours now and no FC. You are doing this from home, and not sense, correct?

so..... I made it through the pre stuff and step I. Eventually got through it, rebooted everything and now I have 2.1 on my Eris.

Now I have no Idea what you are saying to do with Section II.

I downloaded the recovery file and extracted the files into the tools directory...But i don't really get what you are saying in this part:

3. Open up a command prompt and go to your tools directory, and execute these commands: (MAKE SURE YOUR SDCARD IS NOT MOUNTED TO YOUR COMPUTER OR THESE COMMANDS WON'T WORK! MAKE SURE IT IS ON "CHARGE ONLY")
  • adb shell mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
  • adb push recovery.img /sdcard
  • adb push flash_image /system/bin
  • adb shell chmod 755 /system/bin/flash_image
  • adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img

What do you mean by execute these commands? Can you give a little bit more detail in your explanation? Do i really need to do this or can i just skip to the next step and flash a rom?

Yes, I did. And I tried from home and the nexus launcher. Which are you using? I used the couple that came with it (cube I think..) and downloaded some others.

Plug your phone into your usb, usb into your computer. On your phone, under notifications make sure it says "Charge Only." Open a command prompt (Start menu->all programs->accessories) navigate to tools under your AndroidSDK and then type those above commands.

I am using GrdLock's Vanilla ROM with jcase's fix and seeds of life lwp. Phone lags a lil bit but its too cool too care about. :):D:D:D:D

This may seem like a stupid issue, but I can't seem to figure it out. I've been lurking in these forums for a while and just got my Eris.

I'm using a Mac and I downloaded the SDK file from the website. When I extract and open the file, there's nothing titled setup whatsoever. There are two folders which are empty, named add ons and platforms. There's a folder which has a lot of stuff in it, called tools, but nothing with setup in the name at all.

Am I just really stupid or doing this wrong or what? Thanks in advance for any help.

You need to install the Android SDK, there's a Mac version. Extract it to a location, run SDK Setup.exe, install the packages for 1.5 and 2.1, then you open a terminal window. It should be in Applications > Utilities > Terminal. Change to the /tools/ folder of the Android SDK, and do those commands and follow the directions normally, except putting the ./ infront of the adb commands.

Actually there is no SDK Setup.exe for mac, you extract the folder, then go into the folder android-sdk-mac_86/tools and run the file called android (It says this in the SDK Readme.txt), then everything is the same, but you do not need USB Drivers, and you have to do the ./ in front of adb

BTW, just did the rooting yesterday, LOVE it, it feels a little faster to me, the wi-fi tethering is great, wish I could do some torrents on it, but Verizon is killing the connection I think, anyone got any hints for that.

Thanks Again!

I have been running the eris21official rom for a over a week and everything has worked fine, but know I am trying to install the pdfviewer apk and when i go into my command prompt and type in adb root i get "adbd cannot run as root in production builds" and if i type in adb shell mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system i get "permission denied. (are you root?)". Can anyone tell me whats going on?
