Root new update

Lurker
hello everyone i run the stock rom s-on rooted but is there any way. to get the new update w/o losing my root or at least to get rid of the notification

sorry if there is already 50 posts about this

First rule with rooted phones and OTA updates is don't take the update. When you load a custom recovery you remove the phones ability to properly install an OTA update.

I don't have your phone so I'm reluctant to offer advice. On my EVO if you're S-on, you need to flash the stock recovery, or an RUU, then relock the bootloader, then you can accept the OTA. Like I said, this is for the EVO LTE, so please don't do this without confirmation from someone with your phone.

I just wanted to stress the fact to not try to update until you know what the proper process is. :)

Let me take a look and see if there is a guide for you to follow. :)

Unfortunately being s-on you can't really take the update without returning to stock.

You can use your same unlock code though.

Make nandroid.
Lock bootloader
Run ruu
Update
Unlock Bootloader
Flash superuser
Flash recovery
Restore backup

If you were s-off or if you get s-off, you can just flash the firmware. Pretty simple.

Basically, what Brian said.

You COULD take the OTA as a root.

But!

The fun part is that it wouldn't work. Why? Custom recovery. IT has nothing to do with being rooted ;)

If you were S-Off, you could flash the update zips in my update thread that krowley was nice enough to make.

Honestly though?

Run the RUU and take the OTA. Then re-root. It's literally maybe 20 minutes of time. (30 if you have to download the RUU and your internet is a little slow ;))

That's how I did it.

I got a question....

Is there a way to just flash the stock recovery?

Could it be pulled from the Rom.zip from the ruu and flashed alone?

Shafty: It really depends. Its a personal preference. If you're fine with Sense ROM's and don't need AOSP/AOKP/etc, then you don't really NEED it. The OTA addresses the radio issue and whatnot, so that's why its optional ;)

Adam:

That...I'm not sure. Maybe Ramjet or Brian would. Or scotty if he happens to poke his head in here.

in all of your personal opinions would you suggest getting s-off?

That's up to you, it would probably be easier to go s off, if you plan on staying rooted

However I'm thinkin the stock recovery could be flashed, which would let you update, and then flash your custom recovery again, that would be easiest if it works

this is one of the many reasons i love the android community some random guy asks a question and everyone comes to the rescue

Well it worked...I was able to flash the stock recovery

I can't guarantee the update will work (cause I've already got it) but I believe the custom recovery is the only thing holding you back

I will post a db link if you want it

I am looking at the zip now, there it is 'recovery_signed.img'

Edit: anyone wanna try it ?
You should be able flash the stock recovery and install the OTA as long as you are still running the stock ROM, but may lose root in the process and have to flash superuser again. There's a feature in SuperSU to hide root for the purposes of flashing an OTA or running apps that look for root and it would probably be a good idea to use that.

The whole process of hiding root, flashing the stock recovery, downloading and installing the OTA, flashing a custom recovery and restoring root is a little iffy and almost as complicated as the procedure brian706 mentioned, so I would vote for the RUU method rather than flashing only the stock recovery. However, I would modify that a little and rather than restoring the whole nandroid I would suggest doing a selective restore of only the data partition so you don't lose the patches the OTA makes to the stock ROM.

I'm somewhat confused now. When I got the phone, I downloaded and installed the OTA. Then I rooted it. So, do I still have the latest radios and everything? Mine says 1.09.00.0706. But it says the OTA is available to update again. So when I rooted the phone and flashed the stock rooted ROM, I lost the changes the OTA made, right? How do I keep those changes? I was planning on going back to stock RUU, doing s-off, then rooting again, then flashing the update. But the thread with the update says it removed everything besides radios. So I guess I am confused on how to get s-off, get root again, and yet have the latest radios as well as the patch that updated the stock ROM too. Is that possible?

Edit: Rooting is basically unlocking the bootloader and flashing the rooted ROM. So, what if I go back to stock, get the OTA, s-off, unlock bootloader, and then find and flash a superuser file and twrp2 as a recovery? That gets me rooted with everything updated? I was never sure why flashing the rooted ROM makes you rooted, is it just because it contains superuser?

Yes, unless you changed them manually afterward.

That's the updated radio.

I think you just lost the software patches. Flashing a new rom won't change your firmware. As Ramjet mentioned above:

Why flash the stock rooted rom? Take the update then root the update by flashing superSU. Then you will be rooted on the newest stock rom. Flashing Super user on the stock rom is the same as flashing a rooted stock rom.

Just follow these steps:
Make nandroid backup (unless you are completely stock anyway)
Lock bootloader
Run RUU
Take OTA
Unlock Bootlader
Flash Recovery
Flash SuperSU
Be rooted on the latest and greatest.
*Do a data restore (optional) if you need to.

Oh this is good to know. I was just following the instructions in the root thread, and the rooted ROM is supplied there so I used it. I made a recovery backup before flashing the rooted ROM though. So I can either find and flash a supplied stock RUU file, or just restoring the backup I made should put me back to stock unrooted too, right? Do I relock the bootloader before I restore my recovery, if I do that, or would that automatically relock my bootloader for me? Then I'd do as you said, OTA, unlock bootloader, add in s-off, flash recovery and SuperSU.

I apologize for asking these basic things, but I'm learning it all along the way. You guys really are the best, thank you for helping and putting up with me and others too who are new to this or just get lost along the way.

You cannot update with the ota if you have a custom recovery, hense the ruu....run the ruu and everything goes back to day one, except your s status, but if you were soff you wouldn't be asking
