Help Update LG Esteem from ZVB to ZVD

Will upgrading an LG Esteem from ZVB to ZVD erase all my data? I have several text messages on the phone I'd like to save. Is there a way to backup said SMS/MMS, and restore them in case of accidental erasure?
 
You can search sms backup in the market and it will back all yoir sms to your sdcard. Not sure if it will erase data
