Root Flashing 4ext after unlock?

remanifest

Android Expert
I noticed that the complete newbie's guide asks users to flash TWRP after unlock, but I was wondering if anyone here knows whether there would be a problem flashing 4ext instead? I don't see why it wouldn't work, but I wanted to get some advice before I suggest it to others.

Flashing 4ext is fine. The only problem is, I don't know if the app lets you flash recovery unless you are rooted. TWRP offers their recovery.img which is probably part of the reason it was chosen for the guide. It's easy to get a hold of. If you have a 4ext recovery.img, you can flash it, but I don't think that the app will work unless already rooted.

Thanks for the quick reply Brian :)

I just pulled an up to date recovery.img for 4ext as well, and I want to include it in a guide I'm working on.

Do you mean that the frontend app (inside the rom) won't work unless rooted, or that the recovery is limited without root? Just don't want to send people down a black hole.

Well the way that 4ext offers their recovery (even the free version) is through an app. So the app has to be installed on the phone and you use the app to flash the recovery while booted. I am almost 100% sure that you have to already have super user installed to be able to do this.

And you need a recovery to install super user. But it is possible to flash 4ext instead if you have the img. I pulled the img as well and keep it for myself as a PG86IMG.zip. This way, if I ever have to RUU, I can just flash recovery without even needing a pc. Then flash whatever rom I want or superuser. Could be re-rooted less than a minute and no fastboot! :)

While I think using 4ext in your guide is a good thing, I would be careful about it. I am unsure of the legalities, etc. about distributing it. They don't offer the .img on their website and maybe they don't want to? I have no idea. If they did offer it, you would obviously want to link to their site for people to download to give them proper credit.

Actually, I think I will email the 4ext team and just ask them a few questions. I don't think you are trying to do anything wrong, I just don't want you to post it and then get in trouble for it.

There is a .img version of 4EXT recovery on the OP of the Evo 3D CDMA thread in the download section of that post right above the main downloads. Max (madmaxx82) put that there for emergencies since 4EXT will automatically store the current version in a zip file containing the .img version, the MD5 file and a version text file in /sdcard/Download every time a new version is installed.

I have a post in that thread with a PG86IMG.zip version of 4EXT recovery but it's RC7 and the current version is RC9. I wish Max would keep the current .img and PG86IMG.zip versions on his 4EXT Development website, but I guess he supports too many devices for one person to keep up with that.

I just wasn't sure if we were technically supposed to or not. I mean i have a PG86IMG of RC9, I always keep one handy for myself. But if it's in a guide and getting a bunch of downloads... I dunno. Just wanted to make sure I guess...

Edit:

I just emailed max to bring up a few points and ask him about it. Will let you know more when I hear back from him.

That's a good idea but I think for the purpose of a guide using the recovery.img in the OP of his thread is fine, and then it can be updated using the app after the user is rooted. That's what I recommend in my guide on XDA.

You are right about the app needing root to flash the recovery and it also uses busybox commands.
