The RUU is already rooted. It is a developer build, so it is rooted so you can do stuff from ADB.
If you want it to be rooted like the other custom ROMs then you just do the same process as those images and it roots you. However, once rooted you can't do much until you install busybox. Not difficult, but it is a few more steps. Well worth it though because you do have to remove the stock apps if you want them gone.

You have to be rooted to install any 2.1 until the Sprint release comes out. I have heard that they may remove the ability to root in the final 2.1 release.
Haven't heard of busybox, and did not need it to do what I wanted. I used Pre-Kitchen to uninstall the Sprint apps.

If you run the RUU file you do not need to root, just run the program and it updates your phone.
They can't remove the ability to root from the phone. They have made changes to make it more difficult, but there is always a way. The new hboot that everyone is so afraid of, that is the reason everyone is fearful. However, even the new hboot isn't going to stop root for long, in fact there are already methods for working around the new hboot to flash recoveries, which will still allow for custom ROMs.
Android comes with a limited number of built in admin tools. So when you root you install busybox which installs more utilities and allows you to do what you need to.

Doesn't come with the Sprint build AFAIK. I installed it and when I start something like the Titanium Backup app, I get this message:
"Busybox works but the "su" command does not elevbate to root: "whoami" reports "whoami: unknown uid 10104" instead of root/uid 0. I think yhour "superuser whitelist" system app does not worki. Please check with your ROM provider.
I don't think I even have a superuser whitelist. I tried to install the one from the market, but it gave me a message saying it was incompatible.
BTW, not trying to hijack the thread. I used the Sprint Leak to update to 2.1 from stock, and this is what happened...
