Root Update! Update! Read all about it!

Definately. We're going to beta test this for HTC's newer devices. I heard it has a self destruct feature so after like 3 weeks, you're back on ICS, Sense 3.6.

I thought they decided the self destruct would actually destroy the device and we would be given 15% coupons off on the new HTC devices. They are such heroes you know

Sort of like Motorola offering $100 to phones that didn't get ICS to upgrade, only problem with that was VM doesn't offer another Moto phone to upgrade to from the Triumph.
Back on topic, this doesn't matter to me because I use Rocket Dialer. :D

In all seriousness though, how do we even know we will get this nice little OTA just because the Sprint Evo is getting it? Have all our past OTAs been right while Sprint's Evo OTAs came out?

In the eyes of a developer the OTA is for both phones ;)

Also, the sprint evo 3d hasn't even had an update since the Evo V has been around. Our last update was to ICS which was before the Evo V was available.

Actually, the Evo V 4G was out with ICS before Sprint released the official ICS update for the Evo 3D. Remember when it was called the "VM leak" and everyone with S-OFF that flashed the VM firmware was trying to figure out how to get back to the stock Sprint configuration?

Lol, oh yeah! I do vaguely remember that. Oops. Well, then to what I said before, look, VM even got a huge update before sprint...

It's somewhat odd that manufacturers refuse to update devices to current operating systems even when 'homebrewers' prove it can run the platform fine. Even so much as to say better than what the device was released with, provided the source code to the devices hardware drivers.

Probably a money-making idea some marketing guy came up with. "Oh we can't update that, then we can't use 4.2 as a selling point for THESE devices!"

It's actually quite expensive to release updates, besides the software engineers you also have to get it vetted and tested by each individual carrier before it can be released, plus as you stated, you sell more phones to everyone who wants the latest greatest without having to root. :D

Today is the day right? Has anyone received the update notification? Also I just went to the EVO3D forums and I saw absolutely nothing about this update =/.

seems like the update was removed from the list... not sure why but sprint site doesn't show it anymore...
Maybe they've optimized their 3G network enough already with the other devices that have already been deployed, including the (OG) Evo 4G. ;)
