Root does sdcard have to be EMPTY?!?

I am needing to use gingerbreak to reroot my Triumph. I didn't think my sdcard had to be empty/clean to root it however I just happened to catch some instructions for installing Gingerbreak that said to make sure sdcard is formatted/blank! DOES IT NEED TO BE A BLANK SDCARD TO ROOT W/GINGERBREAK???
Also I already downloaded Gingerbreak to my sdcard's download folder & I unzipped it with AndroZip. It unzipped 3 files (v.1, v.2, & .c). I figured it is the V.2 that I need to use? I click to "open" (closest option since doesn't actually say "install"), but it asks what to use to open it with (browser, text editor, text viewer, gallery, & ALOT more) ... what do I tell it to open with so it will install?? ???
As always, Thank You VERY much for any help
 
I didn't think cwm was installed on this phone yet, but husband told me Yes he put it on here several months ago.

Also I ignore last half of my original post because I did FINALLY get the "Install" window to come up, & got it installed. Do I still need to use a totally blank SD card before I use it? And do I need to now go to Play & install SuperUser?
 
Honestly I'm not sure about using gingerbreak. When I rooted my phone I used Odin, it was the most reliable way that I had found and it installed cwm automatically for me so I could install my custom rom straight from my SD card. If it says to have a empty sdcard just transfer any folders/files u don't want loose to ur computer via USB and delete what ever else is on there. U can always transfer them back later. And yes you are going to want to download super user.

Something is not right with that, your sd card does not have to be formatted. Just install the apk, open, run, make sure adb debugging is on and the sd card is mounted.
 
Got it. And no, apparently it doesn't need to really be a blank SD card because everything seems to be there. Thank you all very much for your input/help!!!

Hmmm now if I can figure out where/how to find the dang bloatware files to uninstall/delete, lol

Be careful when removing bloatware. Some stuff looks like bloatware, but is important. If you have any questions, just ask.

Also, be aware that removing bloatware & other system apps will not create "extra" space for storing other apps internally- you will still have the same amount of internal memory available to download user apps. If you install a custom ROM, on the other hand, you may gain some space for additional apps depending on the ROM. :)
 
Instead of just simply rooting, and then having to install Superuser and whatever else you need, the easier option would be to just go with a whole new ROM. All of the current "aftermarket" ROMs have root access "built-in" (as far as I know; someone please correct me if I am wrong) so as soon as you install them your phone has root control.

The first step to installing a new ROM is installing a custom recovery, something that is EXTREMELY SIMPLE with the Motorola Triumph. You don't need to root first to install a new recovery console and once you have it installed it's just as easy to make and/or restore Nandroid backups and flash any one of the plethora of custom ROMs to your phone. The info on flashing the Triumph is pinned the the top of the main page in the "Triumph - All Things Root" forum (this forum, to be exact ;-) )
 
With my phone I had to root the phone first install cwm or twrp then install custom rom. Don't believe you can install from without root access
 
I have seen lots & lots & lots of stuff on different roms. Which ones do yall recommend (i dont care if its similar to stock, or totally different), since there are apparently alot of different ones? I mean, cause I also of course see people having alot of issues too with each one(which is expected, especially at first). The wifi still working is the very most important thing for me (the camera too). With all the different roms, I dont know how to know which one i'll like best, lol.

I had had the phone rooted with Terminal Emulator, but when I typed in "sudo" 1 time yesterday, suddenly it started saying "sudo: not found". That is when i found out i was gonna have to use Gingerbreak... I never found the "sudo" or su not found problem... Since i just rooted it with gingerbreak (instead of using Terminal Emulator) do i need to figure out why/how its suddenly missing???

Basicly means that our phone has the files to be rooted, but they aren't linked in a way to use. If you read b_random's thread about rooting without a computer you will see that the phone has the internals, but the apps don't call the right files.

And our phone doesn't need to be rooted to replace the recovery.img file that we use to load ROMs. Yeah you can load ROMs other ways, but for the unintiated it can be scary. And for those who do know what they are doing, the risk is too great.

I gotcha, I know the brands of phones are different concerning this. I have heard of phones allready being rooted of the shelf. My phone, there wasn't an option to gain root access without a comp. Odin was the only way and from what I understand Odin can only be used with Samsung phones? This is the first phone I have tweaked so I am still learning alot. Eventually I am going to get another phone as mine is pretty outdated and I have pretty much upgraded it as much as I can besides trying different rooms, kernels etc... don't get me wrong the upgrades made have actually made it usable, absolutely hated this thing before. Just wondering how ya'll like the Motorola line and the roms etc... available? Would you recommend this over Samsung?

Well, the MT is not your typical Motorola (made by Huwei) & to be truthful, there are many, many better phones out there, but having had one, I can say it was stupidly easy to root/ROM compared to the LG Optimus V and even my Nook. Once I had initial root & got CWM on my MT, I had no issues trying out a ton of different ROMS.

To date, I haven't rooted my GS3, partly because I'm pretty satisfied with its stock performance, but also because rooting it is a lot more involved & it seems that the likelihood of bricking the phone is much higher. The MT has such an amazing dev community because it's stock ROM is awful AND it is amazingly easy to root.

At this point, the specs on the MT are starting to look pretty dated, with multi-core processors & at least 1GB of RAM kind of becoming the norm, but when it was first released, it was about the best pre-paid deal out there- you have to take that into consideration too.

I know what you mean by outdated. I have a Prevail, single core 800 mh processer (can't get google chrome or earth) , mine is overclocked at 946, it is definitely outdated and limited. I just don't want to shell out the few hundred benjamins to get a better one, at least not right now. Boost is suppose to be finally coming out with a phone on the LTE network in March. Might break down and get one then. Was also thinking about switching over to Verizon?

Sorry gdownloads didn't mean to take over your thread as a diff phone convo piece. Hope you figured out your problem. I would be willing to help anyway I can but since I do have a Samsung I figure one of these other guys might be able to give you more precise feed back

No didn't get to yet because didn't get a chance to use computer to for my backup/recovery, etc. We lost Everything in the Creek County, Oklahoma fires last August so due to alot of setbacks started by that, I have to use a friends computer. I hopefully will have time to put a rom, etc on it in the morning sometime.

It doesn't seem like it ought to be Thursday already! Heck I didn't realize its already after 1am really either (I knew it was getting pretty late though). I'm usually a night owl so its not unusual for me to be up this late though I've noticed few others seem to be, lol

Man I didn't get to sleep till 5 this morning. Up all night browsing amazon, before it was all said and done , I ended up blowing 3 bills. Oh well I didn't really blow.it.got.stuff.that I needed and can use sooooo..... its all good. I know how you feel not having a computer, I fried the motherboard in my laptop a few weeks back and it really sucks. That's actually when I came across being able to tweak your phone. Spent a good 2 and half weeks doing nothing but researching rooting, rooms etc for my phone and eventually came across this awesome forum. Thank God for this site, I couldn't find anything current on my phone. Oh by the way where you able to flash your phone this morning?
 
Yeah this phone is ridiculously easy to root, mainly because the manufacturer left it in a development testing state, hence the problem with the alogs accumulating, the Samsung phones aren't that difficult to root, it's weird in that to install a recovery you have to push it with a kernel at the same time. HTC on the other hand allows you to unlock the bootloader, but everything is done through adb, not the most user friendly, and then to get full access you need to get s-off, it could be worse, try rooting a Sony. :D:rolleyes:
