Root noob question for sure......

Newbie
My first post and I'm gonna be a total noob.......first off my first android was optimus v and thank jebus for one click rooting ...... Now I have acquired an evo v 4g ......still says sprint on the top right across from HTC ......... I got it off cl for 50 ..... It's in near perfect condition except it randomly reboots sometimes .... Especially at inopportune times like dialling to make a call....... I figured what the hell ill try n root it and see if it fixes the problem .... Then I start researching and I'm like dam ....... Sooo my question(s) is ......as off Feb 2013 what is the best way to root my phone (evo v 4g) and install a Rom that's pretty much stock minus bloat and stuff not necessary ..... w/ WiFi tethering .... Optimised battery usage and best use of dual core .... With 3d still working .......oh and also whats the potential of this phone .... So far its better than my laptop in almost all specs.........lol ...... Thanx for the help and I look forward to delving into the world of android hacking starting with this evo ... Oh yeah I'm also stock from what I know with h boot 1.57i think ...if it helps
 
Are you sure is not rooted already?

Hey you got it from CL for $50 so who knows, maybe is rooted already.
 
I finally got my phone rooted .... I tried to stay stock rooted but it still would randomly reboot ....so I decided on trying harmonia ....... My phone hasn't rebooted itself once....... Now another question ........? ...... What exactly is the difference between sense and not having sense .....like in mobsters/senseless ......... Thanks for the feedback and info
 
Senseless is pretty much just a leaner Rom with a lot of the HTC sense removed to give a more cm feel

ie lock screen, freindstream, and widgets and such.

The reply above mine sums it up. Have you discovered that if you swipe from left/right really fast, your homescreens spin around in a totally awesome manner? Well, without Sense, you'll lose that. Do you like the Clock widget with built in weather? I like the 1X4 size myself, and I love the weather animation that you get when you wake the phone up from sleep.

There are many other little things that Sense brings you, but if you don't care about those things, then save some space and get rid of them. I myself really like Sense, and when I tried a few Jellybean ROMs, I was let down somewhat.

This doesn't mean I won't run a JB ROM...I just have to convince myself that I don't need the flashy Sense integration.
 
Using the RUU won't fix errors like this any better than a rom.

The RUU just restores everything stock. Stock recovery, stock rom, stock radios. stock hboot (?)... We have the ability to replace every one of those without using the RUU.

Glad to see Harmonia working well. :)
Since you didn't use it stock for long, I would recommend checking the radio version to see if you have the OTA, and if not, follow the "Fix Everything" thread before you do anything else.

There seems to be a difference between flashing the RUU and flashing individual stock components based on my experience and that of many users that have had problems booting some ROM's after flashing firmware only zip files.

Another example of this is the recommendation from HTC themselves to flash the RUU when having problems with the bootloader unlock procedure if the phone was previously updated with an OTA:

HTC has identified a known issue that may be experienced by some users with a Sprint EVO 3D that shipped with version 2.08.651.2, even if it was updated to a newer software version via FOTA. When attempting to unlock, a blank screen appears on the device after step 12 in the instructions and the process does not complete. As a workaround for users who experience this issue, we suggest you upgrade the ROM to 2.17.651.5 first via OTA then download and install the RUU from the table below to fix the issue before attempting the unlock process. This issue will also be fixed in the ICS update scheduled for EVO 3D.

As it turns out the issue wasn't fixed with the Sprint ICS OTA update and a number of users who installed that had to flash the ICS RUU before they could unlock. Theoretically the same firmware and software were included in the OTA and RUU, but the difference in the installation process affected their ability to unlock the bootloader.

I generally agree with the philosophy of "if it ain't broke don't fix it" which is why I recommend that users install the stock firmware, including the OTA, unless they are having problems.

Although I can't tell you exactly what it is, I know from my experience helping many Evo 3D and Evo V users that there is definitely a difference between flashing the RUU versus bits and pieces of stock stuff. That may also be why the unlimited.io website now specifies the RUU as a prerequisite for the JuopunutBear wire trick rather than an unrooted stock ROM.

Go to settings/about phone/software information/more. If you have the OTA firmware installed your baseband version should be 1.09.00.0706.

I'm not sure what kernels are compatible with Harmonia since I have an Evo 3D and never flashed that ROM.

I got it already ..... @ leslianne what would the creator of my current Rom recommend as far as kernals compatible with harmonia..... Also @anyone ...... What's the best evo v 4g senseless Rom out so I can give it a try and see how much sense I actually use or like

For Harmonia you could try the Mac Sense Kernel and for a senseless ROM you could try Mobsterz HD lite ROM or nsciucco's unSENSEable ROM :D

The reason for the difference is that the RUU eliminates download and the SDcard from the equation and it may do a better job verifying everything. If everything is 100% and flashes properly, there should be no difference.

I used Anthrax, currently on Buttered Toast, but many have had good luck with Mac.

Even flashing the RUU from the SD card as a PG86IMG.zip file has resolved booting problems and other issues for many users. Whatever the reason, it seems that the whole is definitely greater than the sum of the parts.

I am gonna have to agree with ramjet . I tried flashing stock ROM and updating with OTA ... it didn't fix my issues. I really didn't believe ramjet at first. I even told him that I flashed stock ROM and applied the OTA. updated profile and prl, nothing worked. I ran the RUU . Then applied the OTA. Bam.. my issues with data were solved. Not sure how... but I know that flashing the RUU is what fixed my issues
 
Oh and can I flash the anthrax kernal on 4ext ? And any direction on where it say how to do it .... Please and thank you..... Man this harmonia is running sweet the beats makey little Bluetooth speaker sound beastly very nice ......... Every thing is smooth I haven't had no spontainious reboots and I've installed all my apps put my 32gigger back in and I play my games use web and listen to music and it does not lag ..... I wonder how much better it will be with anthrax if I can flash it using 4ext.... Also any hints on Shari should do once I flash it if I can ...... ?..... Or was it mac ..... Whichever you think would be Bette in my case......I love all the stuff I learn through this forum .... Thanx evry1

I concur with ramjet, personally experienced problems flashing roms (many reboots and bootloops with roms that should be booting with my configurations) after installing bits and pieces. Running the RUU through bootloader fixed it.

with my old phone, I did the 1.14 OTA update. Decided to HTC Unlock days later and it did not reboot. It just stays there at the unlock bootloader screen. it didn't reboot like it should when I hit the power button after selecting yes. I could move between yes and no but hitting on the power button does nothing. Had to pull the battery, and rebooted phone, checked bootloader and saw it was unlocked. but what happened was not what it was supposed to do
