what is sooo good about sprint anyway?

OK, back on subject...

I hate to prattle on about my issues with the Sprint Network but...

Things actually got even worse. Not only is service very unacceptable at work in Berkeley, where just today I was down to 12kpbs down, the service has degraded to the point of being almost unusable at home in Oakland too.

Sprint is working on most all of their towers to implement Network Vision. Many people over on S4GRU are reporting that the service got worse right before the service got much better.

Things actually got even worse. Not only is service very unacceptable at work in Berkeley, where just today I was down to 12kpbs down, the service has degraded to the point of being almost unusable at home in Oakland too.

I did call Sprint yesterday because I was finally entirely fed up with it. I have stopped calling lately since I have become very unhopeful that calling makes any difference. But I draw the line when I cannot even count on my only link to the Internet at home when I need to access my study materials online. It looks like I'll be forced to go to a family member's house where they have cable Internet so that I can actually study now.

I did get a very friendly CSR. She was very understanding and... completely unable to help me. She was only able to report that a few others in my neighborhood were complaining yet not enough to keep a ticket open. And I found out from her that I have been accessing the network through a neighbor's Airave. So basically if one of my neighbors (who must be on my floor of my apartment building) didn't have an Airave I may not be receiving a signal at all.

I report this because I have to let others know who may be contemplating a switch to Sprint that as a 13+ year Sprint Customer, I have never seen this complete and total degradation of service in any area where I've worked or lived. I've had Sprint in Chicago, Davenport in Iowa, and here in the Bay Area in California.

Things started to go downhill at the beginning of last year. Now things have gotten so bad that I may have to actually bite the bullet and jump ship. I really hate to leave Sprint because it's cheap and I have such a long history with Sprint. I'd really like to stay. But, I'm really sounding like a broken record and a whiney jerk around here reporting the degradation of the network in Oakland and Berkeley as they attempt to implement Network Vision. I have a tiny bit of hope that things will get much better since others here in other markets where Network Vision has started to saturate the network have reported that things seem to be awesome once a saturation point has been reached.

Now I really need to to a cost / benefit analysis to see if I can really stay with Sprint the 6 months to a year that it will likely take to see a real improvement in the network here. I won't be doing this for another two weeks because I'm simply too busy with studying. But once that test is over, I'm going to have to take a long hard look at who I'm using as my access point for the Internet and who I use to meet my personal communication needs. Unfortunately, it's becoming painfully obvious that I need to look at other options besides Sprint if I want consistent and reliable service.

I'm in a similar situation of data speeds at work have passed the embarrassing point. I sometimes now roam on the way to work on a major freeway and dropped calls are becoming a major issue. The final straw for me is to talk at the house I feel like when cell phones first hit the market years ago where you had to be at a certain spot in a yoga like pose for service.

I plan to call them again tomorrow as I can understand upgrading and being patient but on the same token, I pay for services not being provided as they should. I keep thinking about making the switch to t mobile or prepaid for the cost savings but I'm starting to think that it may just be to get basic service.

Just to update...

I talked to Sprint and they confirmed that the tower closest to my work is being upgraded. I was assured that by Friday night all would be better but that didn't happen. If it isn't better by next week I'll follow up with them.

My other issues didn't have such a simple answer so I get to go have my phone checked out.

Still no service on the tower by work. They are now saying the 31st. I got mad and did the email Dan thing and got the best customer service with Sprint I've had. Honest answers not just bs. They also gave me a $60 credit for my inconvenience on the work tower.

I'm waiting to see when they flip the lte switch how it affects me as t mobiles value plan has really caught my eye being $50 cheaper than Sprint now.

What area is your work at? I'm in Hollywood (by Peterson Automotive Museum) and 3G/4G has been so bad lately that it takes forever to finally connect. Once it does, it lasts for a few minutes, but then cuts out again.

I work at the southeastern corner of the 15 and 60. The tower with the issues is at the 15 and Limeonite.

As an update, sprint has now sent me an airave for the house which doesn't seem to be helping but I need to call their tech support back. I also emailed the Dan@sprint.com again to follow back up on the tower by my work. The tower works awesome after about 10pm but until then no data or texts and drop calls like mad.

This is why I love having unlimited data

The $80 unlimited plan includes mobile to mobile text and data, it include 450 to land line. The most you will pay after taxes is $105 a month and that depends on what star you live in,

hey mookie

if you can use sprint and make calls from another solar system.. for only $105 and get data service.. that is a hell of a deal.
I can barely get it here on Earth!

what i want to know.. is how do you get there?

:P

Here's a speed test update I ran the other day, just west of Chicago. Speeds seem to vary in the Chicago area, but was really surprised I was pulling down this kind of speed.

That is impressive, but those kinds of speeds likely will not last once there is more traffic on the network. Personally, I don't care how high the speeds are as long as they are above 8 mb/s and consistent.

I have Sprint for many years and I thought the SERO was the most golden thing in the world!

Then last month I decide to can it while I have 5 months left and pay the $50 penalty to get out.

I been using T-mobile $30 plan with 5gb of data for about a month now. I like it alot. I strickly use VOIP. I been getting $100 refill card for $70 on ebay. I dont have to pay tax either.

And GSM is superior. My N4 is already unlock for world wide use and the Google Hotspot works! I do not even need it rooted!

I am loving it!

I could not understand why those Sprint LTE phone would not work with 4G! I was in so much pain using a LTE phone on 3G network and while LTE still have alot spotty coverage.

I'm glad that you're enjoying your new service, but "superior" is subjective.

This is why sprint won't have congestion problems. See how widespread sprint lte is to others so for instance if the tower by my house is full there are over 5 more in my vicinity that I can connect too. I c those speeds also

Yep, I know. That is the purpose and function of Network Vision deployment. Cross-tower coverage to provide a dense network structure, unlike AT&T and Verizon who have only given their customers blanket coverage. Truthfully, the only thing I like about AT&T/VZW's LTE network is that they are both run on 10 MHz FDD LTE carriers on lower frequency spectrum (700 MHz).

Yeah I have to agree. Tmo's earnings weren't exactly stellar in Q4. Earnings dropped 15% and they lost almost 500,000 customers. Obviously not as bad as Sprint losing 1 million customers, but considering the size of Tmo's marketshare that is still a significant number.

I like what T Mobile is doing with it's restructuring of their pricing plans, and the fact that they're going away from the subsidizing model that the other carriers have always done. We'll see if it works out for them, especially with the merger with Metro PCS.

As far as data speeds and call quality, just like any of the other carriers, it depends where you are. If you're in a metro area where Tmo is already well established then it's pretty good. More rural area's not so much.

That's the other major difference in what sprint and tmo is doing. Sprint plans on upgrading the entire network urban and rural while tmo is only adding lte to the newer hspa+ towers 2g will stay 2g until further notice.

Don't forget that Sprint's losing Nextel customers. That's the cost of shutting down that side. Not sure how many of them are government-related. It would be more useful to know that.
